HEALTH
QUARTER 2 – MODULE 3
MELC: Explains the effects of living a healthful school and
community
6
PART
A. Introduction:
The physical school environment encompasses the school building and all its contents including
physical structures, infrastructure, furniture, and the use and presence of chemicals and biological agents;
the site on which a school is located; and the surrounding environment including the air, water, and
materials with which children may come into contact, as well as nearby land uses, roadways and other
hazards.
B. Discussions:
Unhealthy school environments can affect children’s health, attendance, concentration and performance,
as well as lead to expensive, time-consuming cleanup and remediation activities. Unhealthy school
environment is tied to multiple negative outcomes for students and has been shown to exacerbate harmful
behavior and diminish achievement. Neglecting to purposefully address issues related to school climate may
result in missed opportunities for student success and improved well-being.
Bad Effects of an Unhealthful School and Community Environments
 decreased graduation rates
 poor student achievement
 facilitates opportunities for bullying, violence, and even suicide
 a decline in psychosocial and behavioral adjustment, as reflected in measures of self-esteem, depressive
symptoms, and problem behavior
 disproportionately affects LGBT students and students with disabilities
Among students with disabilities, it is tied to reports of anxiety, alienation from and disinterest in school,
and feelings of being disrespected and not cared about by school staff.20
 More rate of absenteeism
 Undernourished children
 Lack of parents involvement in school’s activities
 Lack of volunteerism in the community and school
 Prone to diseases due to pollution
An unhealthful learning environment, or setting that adversely affects student learning, can affect
students in many ways, such as low student achievement, poor behavior, student anxiety, or depression.
1
One of the first areas that make a noticeable impact on student success is the physical environment of
the classroom. This can pertain to a variety of details. It can be structure, resources, color. All of these can
play a role in determining whether the classroom will be conducive for learning. Each may not have a large
effect individually, however together they can work to strengthen a student’s ability to learn.
SOME ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS IN THE COMMUNITY
1. Air Pollution- is the contamination of air with harmful substances that cause detrimental effects of life and
health. Diseases that are caused by airborne pollutants include lung diseases, heart diseases, eye and throat
irritation, and the weakening of the immune system.
2. Water Pollution- is the contamination of water that causes harmful effects on life and health. Sewage,
chemicals, radioactive waste, and other substances mixing with fresh water causes contamination. Polluted
water is great source of bacteria and germs that cause many diseases like hepatitis, intestinal disorders, and
amoebiases. Polluted water is harmful to all living organisms such as plants, frogs, fish, reptiles, birds, and
small or large mammals.
3. Land Pollution- is the degradation of Earth’s surface through the misuse of the soil through poor
agricultural activities, mining, industrial waste disposal, and indiscriminate disposal of urban waste.
4. Noise Pollution- is the excessive sound that causes hearing loss, stress, fatigue, irritability, tension,
headache, and high blood pressure. Noise pollution also causes accidents by preventing people to concentrate
and perform.
