1. OSUN STATE 2014
GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION
Introduction & Socio-political Economy
of the State of Osun
The Osun State Governorship election is scheduled to
hold Saturday, 9th August 2014.
Osun State was created on 27th August, 1991 out of
the old Oyo State, and shares boundaries with Ogun
State to the South, Kwara State to the North, Oyo State
to the West and Ekiti and Ondo State to the East.
The State has a population of 3,423,535 people
(Population Census 1996, National Population
Commission) made up of predominantly the Ifes, Ijesas
and Igbominas, who generally speak English and
Yoruba languages with variations in intonation and
accent across the towns and cities.
Osun State has 30 Local Government Areas, covering
an area size of 14,875 (square kilometres) within the
tropical rain forest of Nigeria.
Ile-Ife in Osun State is widely regarded as the
ancestral home of the people of Yoruba ethnic
nationality, and it is the seat of the foremost spiritual
ruler of the Yoruba Kingdom: Ooni Ife.
Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke of Social Democratic Party
(SDP) became the first civilian governor of the State in
January, 1992. He served until the military took over
power in November, 1993.
Osun State is currently governed by Mr. Rauf
Aregbesola who hails from Ilesa in Ilesa-West Local
Government Area.
Governor Aregbesola was elected on the platform of
the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). He was
sworn into office on 27th November 2010 after the
Appeal Court, Ibadan division, pronounced him the duly
elected Governor of Osun State by its judgement
delivered on 26th November 2010. ACN merged with
some other political parties to form All Pro
gressives Congress (APC) in 2013.
The incumbent Governor is contesting for the
August 9 governorship election alongside nineteen other
candidates, including two former Senators.
