So you’ve heard about the growing senior population. You have begun
or expanded development, preservation, and repair programs for elderly
housing. But is that enough? For seniors to age in place they need services.
Can your organization provide both the housing and services? Hear from
your peers on how they did it and why it’s important

Digital Volunteerism and Multi-Sector Collaboration
Melanie Gorka, Heather Leson, and Brian Chick will give an introduction to volunteer technical communities who have partnered with international NGO's, the UN, the World Bank and crisis response organizations and have leveraged the power of crowd-sourcing in times of need.
Thousands of digital volunteers have been utilized after disasters in Haiti and Chile, and more recently in New Zealand and Japan. Participants collaborate within a number of volunteer technical communities including: CrisisCommons (CrisisCamp), Crisismappers, Ushahidi and Random Hacks of Kindness (RHoK). We will present stories of global crowdsourcing, mapping and hackathons.
People and communities innovate for crisis response and global development through technology tools, expertise and problem solving. The various groups collaborate in an open environment to aggregate crisis data, map situational awareness, develop prototype tools, run hackathons for social good and train people on how to use technology tools in new and inspiring ways.. Each of us build partnerships with government organizations on how to use crowdsourcing and digital volunteerism in emergency preparedness.
This panel will discuss the future of digital volunteerism in Canada and around the world and the way in which these tools can be used for social good in collaboration with local, federal and provincial governments.
Care, caring, and caregiver are words used to describe those who take care of family members or friends out of love. These terms are also used by those who are paid to help and support others. This is confusing on a number of fronts.
One: there is a big difference between being paid to provide care versus not expecting and not receiving financial compensation.
Two: the policy discussions and funding decisions tend to focus on professional and paid care provided by non profits, governments or institutions as if they were the only ones. This paid sector receives the bulk of the financial resources allocated by governments. In this regard, natural care is playing teeter totter with an elephant.
That the dimensions, requirements and scale of natural care is invisible is a serious public policy issue. We have relegated it as a private matter. In fact, it defines us as a species, as a country, as a society, as an individual.
Providers of natural care need resources to support themselves and the people they are caring for. It is a matter of decency, natural justice and our collective survival. This serious matter should be a high public policy priority.

23. For more information: http:www.desertministries.org [email_address] We are a Christian organization dedicated to serving the frail elderly living in nursing homes. Many of them suffer from severe depression brought on by feelings of abandonment and loneliness. They are at the mercy of an industry in crisis. Now when they need help the most, there is no one there for them. We recruit and train people to be "family" and advocates for them. We serve them regardless of their religion, race, ethnicity, or gender.
Editor's Notes
Welcome! Today we are going to look into the future, our future. For about 20% of the people in this room that future will be living in a nursing home. Look around the room 1 out of 5 of you will live in a nursing home.
