This is a critical time for this church –
we have real clarity about where we’re headed.

We also now have a clear identity – it’s time to
share it.

Today we’ll talk with you about how we can
incorporate our messages and all work together.
“Faith is a living, daring confidence in
God’s grace so certain that you could
stake your life on it one thousand times.

This kind of trust in and knowledge of
God’s grace makes a person
joyful, confident and happy with regard
to God and all creatures. This is what the
Holy Spirit does by faith.

Through faith, a person will do good to
everyone without coercion, willingly and
happily; serving everyone, suffering
everything for the love and praise of
God, who has shown such grace.”
Our lead message

We are the church that shares a
living, daring confidence in God’s grace.
As evangelical Lutherans, this faith comes through
the good news of Jesus Christ and gives us the
freedom and the courage to wonder, discover and
boldly participate in what God is up to in the world.
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
embraces each and every one of us as a whole
       person, complexities and all.
Our elevator speech

As members of the ELCA, we believe
that we are freed in Christ to serve and
       love our neighbor.
With our hands, we do God’s work of
       restoring and reconciling communities
in Jesus’ name throughout the world.
8 Value Statements
Our values

We are a church that belongs to Christ.
There is a place for you here.

We believe God calls each of us by name. Christ’s
church is not ours to control, nor is it our job to
sort, divide, categorize or exclude. Whenever we feel
compelled to “draw the line” in our lives, we must
acknowledge as Lutherans that Jesus always stands
on both sides of that line.
Our values

We are a church whose unity is in
Jesus, who gathers us around word
       and water, wine and bread.
Because we are grounded in God’s love and
forgiveness, we are equipped to live and serve
here and now, in the world, with all its
complexities, tensions and ambiguities. We have the
courage to explore the world as saints and
       sinners, knowing
we will never take God somewhere God has not
       already been.
Our values

We are a church that believes Jesus is
God’s “Yes” to us. Our lives can be a
       “Yes” to others.

The “Yes” of Jesus compels and empowers us to be
open and accessible within any community, to make
       God meaningful within any context.
Our values

We are a church that believes God is
calling us into the world — together.
We don’t have to do it alone, and we don’t have to
do everything. Each of us has a unique story, and we
are part of a larger story that makes up the ELCA.
We work through our local congregations, synods
and partners and the churchwide organization.
Together, we achieve things on a scale and scope
that we could never do otherwise.
Our values

We are a church that rolls up our
       sleeves and gets to work.
We do God’s work in the world — restoring and
reconciling communities — not because God needs
us to do so, but because our neighbor does. We
pursue justice and seek peace no matter how long
the journey or wide the chasm.
Our values

We are a church that is a catalyst,
       convener and bridge builder.
Our faith calls us to see the world as interdependent.
The ELCA has become a force for connection,
       working across denominations, faiths, organizations
and sectors, locally and globally. We’re a welcome
partner because we respect the perspectives and
strengths of others and share a common vision to
       uphold human dignity.
Our values

We are a church that is energized by
lively engagement in our faith and life.
“Our faith is a living, busy, active, mighty thing,”
said Martin Luther. We continually strive for a
deeper understanding of what the death and
resurrection of Jesus Christ means for the world.
Doing so puts us right where God wants us to be:
       in the thick of life.
Our values

We are a church that is deeply rooted
       — and always being made new.
Our roots are in Scripture, tradition and the
Lutheran Confessions, as well as in the vibrant
communities and rich histories of our congregations.
       These roots are an ongoing source of nourishment;
they enable us to be a church that is both resilient
       and always being reformed.

Editor's Notes

  • #5 Thelead message, informed by this quote, which I am sure you are all familiar with, (read Quote)Now let me walk you through the lead message, elevator speech and the 8 value statements.
  • #8 Now for the 8 value statements
  • #18 In less than a year, we will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the ELCA. The year-long anniversary celebration begins on January 1, 2013 under the theme: “Always Being Made New.” This may sound familiar – the theme is derivative of the last value statement that Melissa just shared in her presentation, “We are a church that is deeply rooted – and always being made new.”At this milestone, we’re celebrating the stories that have made us vibrant and distinctive yet brought us together as nearly 10,000 congregations, 65 synods and numerous churchwide ministries freed in Christ to love and serve neighbors in our communities and around the world. And from our perspective in Mission Advancement, there is great opportunity to use the 25th anniversary as a way to develop and support an unifying theme to support the goals of this church, re-engage our members, and create new opportunities for people to be involved.
  • #19 We were excited to see that within a few short weeks, many synods were already picking up and sharing the identity and themes developed for the anniversary, and using their websites to tell 25th anniversary story. Here’s an example from the Central States Synod.
  • #20 The South Dakota Synod.
  • #21 And, finally, the Northwest Synod of Wisconsin.
  • #22 UPDATE: We want your synods to take the 25th anniversary artwork and run with it. We want you to get creative, think outside of the box and plan some amazing things. But we also want to make it easy for you. Just this week we launched a new section of our website with tools to give you access to downloadable versions of posters, banners, e-mails, that you can print on your own or have professionally printed. And for those who are feeling even more ambitious, we just released several versions of this artwork as templates, so that you can update the faces in the design to incorporate the faces of members in your communities.I’ve included the URL for these resources in the slide above: it’s ELCA.org/25years.
  • #23 The 25th anniversary of the ELCA is an exciting milestone and I hope you will use it as a catalyst to talk about the 8 value statements. We have created tools so you can use the identity and theme in your home Synod and congregations. I will be around and I am happy to listen to your ideas or offer help in how you can roll this out to you communities. And once you return home we are always happy to discuss any ideas or thought that come up. (Toss to Christina)
