The document proposes an app called Elbow Room that helps users find quiet places to work or relax at any time of day. It would use predictive algorithms and multiple data sources like credit card transactions, weather reports, and webcams to determine the current and expected crowd levels at nearby cafes and restaurants. The app would provide a color-coded "crowd index" for venues, along with details about their amenities to help users choose places that are peaceful and uncrowded. The goal is to help people easily locate establishments where they can sit comfortably for an extended period without feeling rushed.

Being Useful - A Short Introduction to Proactive User Experience DesignMariusz Cieśla
Product design is broken. Way too many products are being design and built with content over context. We are overrun by useless notifications and email newsletters we don't care about. In this talk, I'll try to show you how to delight people using your products with design that cares about their context.

When it comes to iPhone app ideas, the list is endless. You can make an app based on any random idea. But, there are a few actionable iPhone app ideas that can actually be converted into apps and be used to generate revenue. There are the top 15 iPhone app ideas which are guaranteed to bring revenue by solving an existing problem.
We all know that you can cut costs dramatically by building the right thing to begin with. But it may not feel like a gain when you’re delaying an app’s release or writing big checks for formal usability research.
In this session, Erin shared specifics for how you can spin up quick and inexpensive mobile usability tests that your entire team can watch in real time. Learn how to recruit and schedule, how to stream and record, how to field real-time suggestions from your team, and how to turn around an analysis within hours or days instead of weeks. With a minimal upfront investment, your team will be able to fulfill the Agile/Lean vision of continuous, user-centered improvement.

Designing and deploying mobile user studies in the wild: a practical guideKaren Church
This tutorial was presented as part of Mobile HCI 2012 in San Francisco on the 19th September 2012. The tutorial aims to provide a practical guide to conduct mobile field studies based on the learning outcomes of the research I've been involved in while working as a Research Scientist in Telefonica Research, Barcelona. I cover how to design effective mobile field studies, the importance of mobile prototyping, the impact of various design choices on the study setup and deployment, how to engage participants and how to avoid ethical and legal issues. I've also tried to include listings of useful resources for those who are interested in conducting mobile field studies of their own.

Designing for Multi-touchpoint ExperiencesJamin Hegeman
Want to help your team and stakeholders develop a mindset for designing and delivering multi-touchpoint service experiences before getting caught up in constraints and requirements? Could you use a fun, experience-driven method to level the playing field and get multidisciplinary teams working together to generate ideas?
During the first part of this service experience workshop, we’ll use an acting method called ‘service storming’ to rapidly generate ideas for a service concept across multiple touchpoints. This simple, but powerful tool will help teams cover a wide range of experiences in a short time period.
After acting out some service experiences, we’ll focus on making them operational. For this, we will turn to the service blueprint, a service design tool that helps you capture experience across time and touchpoints in a way that many teams and stakeholders can understand and design from.
Together, these tools will help you and your teams develop a service mindset, work better across disciplines, and move from ideation to execution of multi-touchpoint service experiences.
What you’ll get in this workshop:
A great team building exercise that gets people thinking outside of the box, screen, or whatever constrains them
An introduction to service storming, a great ideation method that using acting as a way to generate and communication service concepts
An introduction to service blueprints, an operational tool used to visualize the touchpoints and backend systems needed to realize service experiences
Popular applications like Yelp, Google Maps, and Groupon have provided convenient ways to discover and blueprint all the details of a fun and exciting date. These services provide users with the ability to choose a date based on the type of activity, rating, location, deals offered, and a plethora of other options. With the improvements of mobile devices and applications, all of this planning can even be done right in the palm of our hands. However, when planning out the details of a date, users are constantly switching back and forth between applications in order to find that ideal combination of activity type, rating, location, and deals. This can take a considerable amount of time and be quite frustrating due to the amount of factors to consider and the abundance of options available on the web. Through the use of semantic web technology, everything necessary to plan a perfect date can be combined into one easy to use application. The semantic web provides meaning to every piece of information on the web through the use of ontologies, making knowledge readily available and personally tailored to each person who needs it.

Book Formatting: Quality Control Checks for DesignersConfidence Ago
This presentation was made to help designers who work in publishing houses or format books for printing ensure quality.
Quality control is vital to every industry. This is why every department in a company need create a method they use in ensuring quality. This, perhaps, will not only improve the quality of products and bring errors to the barest minimum, but take it to a near perfect finish.
It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.

The App

For General Assembly UX11
Presented Dec. 17, 2013 (Revised May 22, 2014)
2. RESEARCH NOTES
Utilizing open-ended “Ohno Circle” methodology,
I sat in a restaurant near my home and just
observed the customers while taking notes.
3. FINDINGS
Many of the patrons who came in after 2pm came
not for the food (which is excellent) but in search
of a quiet place to
• Think
• Talk
• Listen
• Read
• Work
• Observe
4. PERSONAS
My research identified several user groups likely
to seek out such mid-afternoon “third place”
establishments. Among them:
• High School and College Students
• Stay-at-Home Mothers of Young Children
• Freelancers
• Professionals Seeking a Quiet Getaway
5. CHALLENGE
Find a way for people who like to hang out in
quiet, uncrowded restaurants or cafes to
immediately locate establishments where they
can sit with friends or a book for a long time
without being rushed or distracted.
6. SOLUTION 1
An app/website that uses data analysis to
determine at which times a given establishment
is likely to be uncrowded based on of sales at
different times of day.
Example: It could tell you that the nearest
Starbucks is a mob scene on Mondays at 8am
but a hermit’s dream at 11am.
7. SOLUTION 2
An app service that encourages restaurants and
cafes to install webcams that allow prospective
customers to see how crowded it is in real time
before making the trip.
This could be an add-on to services (Yelp, Zagat,
Foursquare) that already help customers find
venues.
8. THE IMPLEMENTATION:
Elbow Room
An app that uses predictive
technology to help you find a
quiet place to go at any time of
the day.
9.
10. Algorithms predict present and
future user density by factoring in
such factors as:
• Credit-card data
• Fire code requirements
• Weather reports
• Real-time transactions
• Doorway sensors
• Cell phone density
• Webcam analysis
11. User criteria creates a ranked list of
nearest venues matching desired
attributes, giving each a “crowd
index” number and a corresponding
color.
• Green = Under 50% full
• Yellow = 50% to 100% full
• Red = More than 100% full
(expect a wait)
12. Venue-level page gives detailed
information, including a graph
showing that day’s crowd estimates,
along with other data one would
typically find on Yelp, Foursquare,
or Zagat:
• Address, phone number
• Hours, attributes, price
• Travel information
• Live webcam (if available)
