The movie I picked is “The Help”. Set in Mississippi during the 1960s, Skeeter (Stone) is a southern society girl who returns from college determined to become a writer, but turns her friends' lives -- and a Mississippi town -- upside down when she decides to interview the black women who have spent their lives taking care of prominent southern families. Aibileen (Davis), Skeeter's best friend's housekeeper, is the first to open up -- to the dismay of her friends in the tight-knit black community. Despite Skeeter's life-long friendships hanging in the balance, she and Aibileen continue their collaboration and soon more women come forward to tell their stories -- and as it turns out, they have a lot to say. Along the way, unlikely friendships are forged and a new sisterhood emerges, but not before everyone in town has a thing or two to say themselves when they become unwittingly -- and unwillingly -- caught up in the changing times.
The negative image of the African American male/female can be directly traced to the historic stereotyping of a racist white mentality evidenced in motion pictures, in literature and in popular American folklore. Although the movie is somewhat lacking in its credible presentation and it does not really tackle the reality of the civil rights era it argues for civil rights and tries to break stereotypes. Many of the actors show us different sides of the feelings of rich and middle-class whites that are living in the south. The movies gives us a perspective of how African Americans and whites felt about one another in a difficult time. This is done in a somewhat intimate environment mostly set in a small town in the participates homes with up close and personal situations. The set, actors, and environment sets up a powerful message of racism in the deep south that many people don’t realize. Most camera angles and cinematography are up close and personal with face to face intimate situations caught on film showing us how each actress felt. Although, I enjoy more of a factual and serious movie when it comes to content like racism that should be take very serious The Help is a very entertaining movie with a positive message.

I found the Native American actors' tactic of playing the trickster, as mentioned by Michelle H. Raheja in Reservation Reelism, to be very interesting.
"Native American actors refusing to play dead when shot on film sets, replacing revolver blanks with live ammunition, and performing staged ceremonies incorrectly in order to subvert the potential power of the act attest to the on-screen and off-screen attempts on the part of the Indigenous entertainers to subvert Hollywood hegemony."
This tactic was also mentioned in Reel Injun. Native American actors would joke in their language and go off script in films such as A Distant Trumpet (1964). The American audience didn't notice because no one ever bothered to translate what the actors were actually saying. The white filmmakers just needed them to sound "Indian". It's not as bad as when white actors used to play Native American characters and would speak English backwards to sound savage. However, it is still incredibly degrading to treat them as props instead of actual people.
Visual sovereignty refers to the right of Native Americans to an accurate portrayal of their culture and people. As discussed in Reel Injun, Hollywood was not interested in differentiating the different tribes and ethnic groups. For a long time, all Native Americans and their cultures were lumped together. Every Native American in film were Plains Indians and they all live in the desert. The Native American actors didn't have the power to call for accurate representation in film.
Discussion 2: Pariah ( Nurul )
I think Pariah is kind of a departure from the other films because rather than focusing on crimes or hardship of blacks’ community, it focuses on lesbian group. Even though there is a lesbian character in Dope, the overall story is nothing about her. However, Pariah still portrays a glimpse of what black middle class family looks like with depiction of Alike’s family. With both parents really love their daughters, it is not what I used to see in other films because there are not using harsh words or ways to their daughters. Even though the depiction of Laura’s family problem is common, it is nothing to do with her parents being irresponsible- it is Laura who chooses different pathway than her mother. I think the way Laura and Alike dress up just because they want to show their tendency to become butch and manly in relationship with other women. They want to express themselves.
What I could conclude from the reading is that oppression is what causes some people to reject LGBT. “Black lesbian relationships pose little threat to “self-defined” Black men and women secure in their sexualities. But loving relationship among Black women do pose a tremendous threat to systems of intersecting oppressions. How dare these women love one another in a context that deems Black women as collectivity so unlovable and devalued? The treatment of Black lesbians reveals how the sexual expres.

AUDIO Initial ideas
A student has researched potential stories for an audio project and settled on telling an original story set within the lore of Slenderman. The student's idea is for a found cassette tape the listener discovers while walking through the woods being chased by Slenderman. Sound effects of the woods and a final scare of Slenderman's sound would be included. The student feels good about their idea but still needs to do research on the Slenderman mythology and learn audio editing software skills.

- 2. • El Norte is a realistic film about both the Guatemalan government’s oppression of the Quiche Indians and the hard life of illegal immigrants in the United States
- 3. • The film begins with the destruction of the San Pedro village with the deaths of several Quiche Indians. • To avoid being killed, 2 siblings (Rosa and Enrique) decide to travel North to the U.S.
- 4. • During the journey, the pair runs into several helpful people to assist in their journey but later find the coyote they were looking for. • [Coyote- professional human smuggler.] • Rosa and Enrique make it across the border.
- 5. • In order to cross the border, and live as immigrants in the U.S., Rosa and Enrique pretend to be Mexican [using stereotypes] • They live in constant fear of deportation • The pair obtain jobs, find a place to live, and enjoy customs they have heard of such as “everyone has a car” and “flushing toilets”.
- 6. • Rosa meets Nacha at a clothing factory. • The factory is later raided by the government for employing illegal immigrants. • Nacha and Rosa team up and clean houses together. • Rosa has trouble adapting to the technology and depends on her well know way of cleaning clothes.
- 7. • While cleaning one day, Rosa gets sick and faints while working. • She is rushed to the hospital and later dies from an infection that she got after being bitten by rats during the underground travel to the U.S.
- 8. • Enrique gets an opportunity of a life time when he gets a job offer in Chicago. • He turns this down when he hears Rosa is sick (from Nacha) and stays with her until she dies. • At the conclusion of the film he cuts off the arm of a Guatemalan soldier as a symbol of his father’s death (died at the beginning of the movie by the government).

WHY IS THIS A GOOD MOVIE? • El Norte shows a realistic view of immigrantes crossing the border into the United States and the hard life they live to stay there. • Rather than being very generalized, the movie focuses on a pair of siblings living and struggling together. • The viewer gets to know the characters and feel for them in the good times and bad times.

Cultural Context • There are several parts of the movie with cultural context: – When Rosa starts to feel ill she goes to a “folk healer” – This is very common in hispanic countries • Once she realized she is too sick for a folk healer, Rosa is afraid to go to the hospital for the fear of deportation. This is also common among immigrants. They put their lives on the line just to be able to stay in the U.S.
- 11. Cultural Context • The Guatemalan dialect is heard throughout the film • Rosa and Enrique must pretend to be Mexican [using stereotypes] because of the inhospitality of Indians. It is considered “worse” to be a “lazy Indian” than a Mexican. – Hard work, little pay – Foul language

Reflection/ Recommendation • This movie has an interesting story line that is realistic. • Although it is in Spanish, the dialect familiar to Guatemala is easy to understand if the viewer is familiar with the Spanish language • This movie has more than 1 “theme” – There are parts that are sad and other parts that are funny along with violence.
- 14. • Overall, the story line is very easy to follow. There are suspenseful moments however, the director stays on task and does not bounce around with flashbacks or flash-forwards. Therefore there is no confusion throughout the movie and the viewer is always aware of what is happening and why. I personally fell for the characters and really got into the story line. There are no “slow parts” to the movie and the director leaves you “wanting to know more.”
