3. Stereotypes of Horror Films
โข There are a few stereotypes of most typical Horror Films.
โข There is always a โdamsel in distressโ, usually a pretty
women who can be easily overpowered, for example
Sarah Michelle Gellar in the original โI know what you did
last summerโ
โข The lead character have an alignment with either good
or evil.
โข The monster often has a trademark tool for killing like
Freddie Kruger has claws. These trademarks are
emphasised in the photography.
โข The victims are often portrayed in either innocent or
neutral colours so they are shown as neither good or
evil.
4. There are certain โLessonsโ that
must be learnt in horror films, for
example: โScreamโ
โข You may not survive the movie if you have
sex.
You may not survive the movie if you drink or
do drugs.
You may not survive the movie if you say "I'll
be right back."
โข This may be to provide a lesson, and
discourage people not to do these things.
5. Shields.
โข In many horror films, there are three shields that
people will always go to:
โข A minor threat, people turn to their mother, or
their parents.
โข Secondly, people turn to the Police.
โข Sometimes, people even turn to God for help.
โข In many horror films, these shields are taken
away from the victim, eventually leaving them
unprotected.
6. The Victim
โข In many horror films, there are more then one
victim, however the most obvious is the innocent
girl who you know is going to die. This is
supposed to present a sense of frustration and
empathy, making people think that if they were
the victim what would they do, but also because
the audience is not under the pressure of
imminent death, they often are trying to tell the
character what to do.
โข If the victim is trying to run away, they often trip
over a rock, or go and hide somewhere, and
most of the time, this victim is found and killed.
