Final attainment levels of the certified HTI-level structural engineer
The HTI
The HTI (Hoger Technisch Instituut) stands for Institute for high-end technical studies. It is an
originally private run school, presently running under a foundation. The HTI provides
practically relevant courses for architectural and structural designers in addition to the
government run and -certified technical BSc colleges. Many international students use the
HTI courses to apply themselves for the Dutch consultancy and building industry. The HTI
was founded in 1939. At the moment it has a yearly intake of approximately 200 students.
Each year about 40 structural engineering certificates are awarded.
The HTI certificate
The certified HTI-level structural engineer is able to apply common construction principles
and methods in a design of a structural system of a building and can be responsible for such
a design. The certified HTI-level structural engineer also has the basics and the skills to
detect uncommon problems and applications and knows how to find solutions.
The training for this level consists of two year courses after completion of a suitable previous
training on a technical Bachelor level. The course is given on Saturdays and is 0.25
equivalent of a full-time day course.
The end level of knowledge and skills is between the international BSc and MSc levels.
The certificate of HTI-level structural engineer can obtained separate for concrete and for
steel structures separately.
The course
The course consists of the subjects: mathematics, applied mechanics, concrete material
theory and execution methods and design theory of concrete and steel structures.
The content of the subject of mathematics is: methods of calculus, integrals and differentials,
linear algebra and numerical mathematics. The math courses are partly computer aided with
help of the program Maple.
The applied mechanics consist of classical and matrix approaches, theory of elasticity and
plasticity, beam theory, frame and lattice analysis with direct solution methods, with minimum
energy theorems, and with the finite element method.
In the subject of concrete technology and execution methods the following issues come up:
concrete mix design, concrete execution and formwork technology, concrete deterioration
and damage and repair methods.
The subject of design theory of concrete structures deals with design aspects, calculation
methods and checking according to the codes of cast in place elements, like beams,
columns, frames, slabs and stability systems of buildings, as well as aspects of pre-cast
member design.

The subject of steel structures deals with the design aspects of modern steel structures, e.g.
member design according to the codes, connection design, lattices, stability of members and
of structural systems of steel buildings.
