Both "free-range" and battery cage hens are debeaked without anesthetic and force molted through starvation. They are considered spent after only 18 months of laying eggs and killed in the cheapest way possible. All male chicks are brutally killed at one day old because they cannot lay eggs. While "free-range" hens are not confined to cages, they come from the same hatcheries and endure the same treatment and mutilations as battery cage hens. They are also killed when their egg production declines to remain profitable, as keeping unproductive roosters and spent hens would cut into farm profits. The only humane alternative is to go vegan.
