How would you get a boiled egg
into a conical flask?
 You can’t use the following:
 Physical force
 Get a bigger flask
 Break the egg apart

 All you have are:
 Box of matches
 Paper
Get the egg
to the bottom
 of the flask!
                 Egg

How is this
possible? Conical
                  Flask
You will need:
 x1 – Heatproof mat
 x1 – Conical flask
 x1 – Boiled egg
 x1 – Strip of paper
 x1 – Safety goggles

 Caution – Sixth formers & adults will
carry the matches, please ask for help!
How its done...
1. Light the paper with a match
              so it sets on fire
      2. Place the paper quickly
          inside the conical flask
     3. Cover the top of the flask
                with the egg
        4. Stand back & watch!
Why does this happen?
 Expansion & Contraction
 When things heat up they expand...
 The heated air from the flame expands in the flask,
but all the oxygen is used up due to the egg
    covering the bottle opening...
 The fire dies, and the air inside the flask cools
    again causing it to contract...
 Air cannot get into the flask so a vacuum is
created. This vacuum sucks the egg into the flask.

our experiment...
