Aer Lingus' total costs in 2012 were 1,393 million euro, with 358 million euro spent on fuel, accounting for 25.7% of total costs. In 2011, Aer Lingus' total costs were 1,288 million euro and fuel costs were 288 million euro, representing 22.4% of total costs. To reduce fuel costs, Aer Lingus can purchase new aircraft made of composite materials, charge for luggage to reduce aircraft weight, and optimize cruising altitudes.
