Effectiveness of International Organizations International organizations respond to global social injustice by providing a variety of services that save lives and build futures. Some organizations provide relief aid such as food, shelter, and medical services. Others provide developmental aid such as the technology and training needed to create self-sustaining communities. These organizations are funded by governments, corporations, and other private donors. With a large number of organizations working internationally, confusion, disorganization, and even fraud may occur. Poor coordination among the various organizations and lack of knowledge about local cultural practices are factors that may reduce the effectiveness of an organization in providing assistance to those in need. How do companies determine which stakeholders are more important than
others? Which group of stakeholders should the company be accountable to?
Every company more than likely has customers, is part of a community, and
publicly traded companies have hundreds if not thousands of stockholders;
therefore, not all of them can be of equal importance. Stakeholder theory
attempts to answer this question by applying three attributes to groups of
stakeholders; power, legitimacy, and urgency.
As defined by Stanwick and Stanwick (2014), “Power is the extent to which the
organization can influence or impose its will on the stakeholder group” (p. 42).
When an organization has the power to make a difference or to change a

Unit Lesson
How do companies determine which stakeholders are more important than
others? Which group of stakeholders should the company be accountable to?
Every company more than likely has customers, is part of a community, and
publicly traded companies have hundreds if not thousands of stockholders;
therefore, not all of them can be of equal importance. Stakeholder theory
attempts to answer this question by applying three attributes to groups of
stakeholders; power, legitimacy, and urgency.
As defined by Stanwick and Stanwick (2014), “Power is the extent to which the
organization can influence or impose its will on the stakeholder group” (p. 42).
When an organization has the power to make a difference or to change a
pattern in society, we would expect that they would. For example, the March of
Dimes was started in 1938 by
President Franklin D.
Roosevelt to combat polio,
which he was diagnosed with
in 1921, and had left him
unable to move his legs. After
many years, its original goal of
eliminating polio was
accomplished, and the
organization then had to make

that they would be a success in

THE EMERGENCE OF THE NONPROFIT SECTOR IN THE US While the concept of civil society as such is not common currency in the US, there is nonetheless a deep-seated cultural understanding that civil society finds its clearest expression in this country. Indeed a strong political as well as cultural current running through American history and contemporary society sees the US as an ongoing “experiment” in civility, community, democracy, and self-governance. Not only the country as a whole, but cities, such as New York, Chicago, Miami, and Los Angeles in particular, regard themselves as the “social laboratories” of modern urban life: they are among the most diverse in the world in ethnic, religious, and social terms, with large portions of immigrant populations, small local government, and high levels of community organizing and individualism. A strong expression of this cultural self-understanding is that the US, in all its imperfections and injustices, is nonetheless regarded as the embodiment of human political progress. This ideological current assumes at times mythical dimensions, perhaps because it is so closely linked to, and rests on, major symbols of US political history. In countless political speeches as well as in popular culture frequent references are made to highly symbolic events and documents that provide deep roots of legitimacy to both nonprofit organizations and the notion of self-organization. Among the most prominent of such cultural-political icons:

Introduction:
We began the course discussing what John Berger calls “ways of seeing.” Sontag, Mitchell, and Clarke all appear to pick up from where Berger ends his essay and look at what Berger calls “the new language of images” (116). Berger’s prediction or assessment that there is this new “language of images” seems to have come true according to Sontag, Clarke, and Mitchell as they examine what it is, how it operates, and what problems and challenges this new language presents. Berger expresses interest in this new language of images as he says, “Within it we could begin to define our experiences more precisely in areas where words are inadequate. (Seeing comes before words.)” (116). He is concerned, however, with who will control this new language or these images identifying this with power saying, ”If the new language of images were used differently, it would through its use, confer a new kind of power” (116).
Sontag, Mitchell, and Clarke also see the creation and use of images as a form of power and ask questions about what form this power takes, who or what has or exercises this power, and over what or whom is this power practiced. Sontag goes so far as to suggest that photography, the principle medium through which most of us experience images, has taught us a new way of being in the world as it “changes the terms of confinement in the cave, our world” (3). She also argues “In teaching us a new visual code, photographs alter and enlarge our notions of what is worth looking at and what we have a right to observe” (3). Mitchell refers to images’ “potency” and describes “the ancient superstitions about images” which claims “they make people do irrational things, that they are potentially destructive forces that seduce and lead us astray” and says we still believe these things despite claiming that we don’t (19). Like Sontag, he is concerned with what she describes as “what is worth looking at and what we have a right to observe” and he argues “we still have to ask what it is about images that gives them su.

Emily is an 18-month-old toddler developing typically. She attends a for-profit childcare center full-time. Emily’s parents are divorced and she lives half-time with each parent. She has two older brothers, ages 6 and 10. Emily’s father is a plumber and her mother is a cashier at a local grocery store. Emily has begun biting other children at the childcare center. You have just been assigned to act as the lead educator in her classroom. The assistant is concerned about Emily’s biting and so are some of the parents of the other children, as she has left bite marks on two children, though the skin was not broken. During your first day in the classroom, you observe the following:
Emily is playing alone with a doll. Janesta, who is 23 months old, walks over to Emily and takes the doll Emily was playing with. Emily then bites Janesta on the arm. You swiftly pick Emily up and tell her, “We don’t bite,” and hold her in your lap for a few minutes. Then she runs to play with blocks.
Later in the day, you witness Emily walk up to a boy in the class and bite him on the shoulder, without any apparent provocation. The assistant quickly picks Emily up and moves her to the reading area and reads her a book. Emily stays there for 10 minutes, quietly turning pages.
Part 1: ABC Analysis Chart
You will use the case scenario above to develop a hypothesis as to what is the likely function of the behavior. Be sure to use your Unit 6 readings on Functional Behavior Assessment to assist you in filling out the ABC chart template in DocSharing.
A=Antecedent. What happened immediately before the behavior? Was there any event or activity that preceded the behavior?
B=Behavior. The behavior should be defined in observable, objective terms.
C=Consequence. What happened immediately following the behavior?
Function of behavior = this is your hypothesis. Using what you have learned about behavior, what is the most likely function? Is the child trying to get something, and if so, what? This could be tangibles such as access to a toy, a preferred activity or even attention. Is the child trying to escape from something, and if so, what? This could be escape from an unwanted task such as cleaning up toys.
Part 2: Behavior Change Chart
For Part 2, using your hypothesis and the information from your ABC chart, fill out the template in DocSharing and manipulate variables to determine if your hypothesis is correct in order to pick the best course of action to take with Emily. You can only manipulate one variable at a time in order to determine what would be most effective in modifying Emily's behavior. First you will manipulate the antecedent. When you changed the antecedent (A), what do you predict will happen and why? If you do not get the desired behavior change (B), then you need to try manipulating another variable. In this case, you will then manipulate the consequence (C). What do you predict will happen with the behavior (B) and why?

Imagine you are an Information Systems Security Officer for a medium-sized financial services firm that has operations in four (4) states (Virginia, Florida, Arizona, and California). Due to the highly sensitive data created, stored, and transported by your organization, the CIO is concerned with implementing proper security controls for the LAN-to-WAN domain. Specifically, the CIO is concerned with the following areas:
Protecting data privacy across the WAN
Filtering undesirable network traffic from the Internet
Filtering the traffic to the Internet that does not adhere to the organizational acceptable use policy (AUP) for the Web
Having a zone that allows access for anonymous users but aggressively controls information exchange with internal resources
Having an area designed to trap attackers in order to monitor attacker activities
Allowing a means to monitor network traffic in real time as a means to identify and block unusual activity
Hiding internal IP addresses
Allowing operating system and application patch management
The CIO has tasked you with proposing a series of hardware and software controls designed to provide security for the LAN-to-WAN domain. The CIO anticipates receiving both a written report and diagram(s) to support your recommendations.
Write a three page paper in which you:
Use MS Visio or an open source equivalent to graphically depict a solution for the provided scenario that will:
filter undesirable network traffic from the Internet
filter Web traffic to the Internet that does not adhere to the organizational AUP for the Web

Employee morale relates to feelings of importance and job satisfaction, and depends on communicating frequently and honestly with your workers

- 1. Effectiveness of International Organizations International organizations respond to global social injustice by providing a variety of services that save lives and build futures. Some organizations provide relief aid such as food, shelter, and medical services. Others provide developmental aid such as the technology and training needed to create self-sustaining communities. These organizations are funded by governments, corporations, and other private donors. With a large number of organizations working internationally, confusion, disorganization, and even fraud may occur. Poor coordination among the various organizations and lack of knowledge about local cultural practices are factors that may reduce the effectiveness of an organization in providing assistance to those in need. To prepare for this Discussion : Review the book excerpt, “Chapter 2: Before and Beyond the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.” Study the principles of the various human rights initiatives and consider how they relate to international organizations. Review the article, ”Human Rights Bodies.” Think about the human rights bodies that monitor global human rights and social justice issues. Review the article, “Haiti: The Aid Dilemma (Q & A with Adam Davidson).” Think about the relief effort provided by international organizations following the Haiti earthquake.
- 2. Consider the challenges, successes, and long-term issues of providing aid. Review the article, “NGO Research Guide.” Take note of the various NGOs that have contributed to social justice. Select one international organization that took action for social justice. Use the Walden Library and the Internet to conduct additional research on the organization you selected to determine their projects, activities, and relief efforts. Select one situation where the international organization took action for social justice. Consider the effectiveness of their efforts for that specific situation. With these thoughts in mind : Due by Wednesday 2/14/18 Post a 500-word a brief description of the international organization you selected. Then explain the social justice issues that the organization addresses and types of assistance they offer. Finally, describe one situation where the organization took action for social justice and describe the effectiveness of its actions.
