Presentation given at openSUSE Conference 2019 (recording: https://metaspora.org/open-source-firmware-oSC19.pdf)
Firmware is found in all computing devices, including PCs, laptops, networking equipment, printers, embedded devices such as IoT and industrial controllers, mobile phones, tablets, and more. The community around open source firmware has grown over the last years, allowing for more exchange in the development and granting freedom to end users. Prominent projects like U-Boot, Tianocore, coreboot and others teach how firmware works and welcome contributions. This talk provides a brief introduction into firmware, an overview of the general build process, a perception of the current state of development on two platforms, an end user report, and a summary of the first Open Source Firmware Conference, which was supported by the openSUSE project.

No more Dockerfiles? Buildpacks to help you ship your image!Anthony Dahanne
Do you always create a new Dockerfile for each new project?
Do you implement your own SSL certificate logic in this Dockerfile?
Do you forget to update your base image version?
Do you wonder how to generate a Bill Of Material to comply with your organization requirements?
Have you answered yes to any of those questions? Come and attend this talk to learn a new way to build your images, all use cases included - demos provided along the way!
After a brief recap of what p2 is and depicting the overall vision, the presenter will show how this vision is realized and how the improvements made to both the runtime (core and UI) and the tooling in Galileo pave the way for a better provisioning solution at Eclipse.

Jetpack aims to enable extension development to more. The principles are that they are Web-based, secure, extensible, and robust. The XUL model is replaced by HTML, attractive to Web developers who can carry over their skills. Add a powerful API on top of a super-fast JavaScript Engine, and the developer is in control. The user gains from a better experience, with a no-restart install, more security, and better compatibility between Firefox releases.
I will give a talk on the basics of Jetpack, delve deeper into some areas of interest with code samples, and run some demos to show how powerful and attractive the Firefox platform can be as browsers extensions evolve.

Writing malware while the blue team is staring at youRob Fuller
Talk given at DerbyCon 2016 and RuxCon 2016
Malware authors and reverse engineers have been playing cat and mouse for a number of years now when it comes to writing and reversing of malware. From nation state level malware to the mass malware that infects grandmas and grandpas, mothers and fathers, the different types of malware employ a myriad of techniques to stop those who look at it from guessing the true intent. This talk will be about some of the unorthodox methods employed by some malware to stay hidden from, or out right ignore the reverse engineering community.
Kernel Recipes 2013 - Easy rootfs using BuildrootAnne Nicolas
The Linux kernel is an exciting world. But if you want to get a working system, it is still essential to provide our kernel a root filesystem. The kernel developers often struggle to find a simple rootfs, adapted to their architecture, together with the tools that fits properly.
We will present how Buildroot, a tool for building embedded Linux systems, can meet the needs of kernel developers in the build of minimal rootfs for their developments.

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.
Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

A tale of scale & speed: How the US Navy is enabling software delivery from l...sonjaschweigert1
Rapid and secure feature delivery is a goal across every application team and every branch of the DoD. The Navy’s DevSecOps platform, Party Barge, has achieved:
- Reduction in onboarding time from 5 weeks to 1 day
- Improved developer experience and productivity through actionable findings and reduction of false positives
- Maintenance of superior security standards and inherent policy enforcement with Authorization to Operate (ATO)
Development teams can ship efficiently and ensure applications are cyber ready for Navy Authorizing Officials (AOs). In this webinar, Sigma Defense and Anchore will give attendees a look behind the scenes and demo secure pipeline automation and security artifacts that speed up application ATO and time to production.
We will cover:
- How to remove silos in DevSecOps
- How to build efficient development pipeline roles and component templates
- How to deliver security artifacts that matter for ATO’s (SBOMs, vulnerability reports, and policy evidence)
- How to streamline operations with automated policy checks on container images
