INTRODUCTION
The Information andLibrary Network (INFLIBNET) Centre is an autonomous
InterUniversity Centre of the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India.
Established in 1991, INFLIBNET plays a pivotal role in modernizing university libraries
in India and connecting them through a nationwide high-speed network. The Centre’s
objective is to promote resource sharing among academic and research institutions by
networking their libraries and information centers. It acts as a vital platform for scholars,
teachers, and students by providing access to scholarly content and information
resources in electronic form.
Over the years, INFLIBNET has evolved into a key digital library and information hub,
supporting teaching, learning, research, and innovation in higher education. It integrates
traditional and modern library practices by digitizing content, establishing databases, and
ensuring access to scholarly publications. With programs like Shodhganga,
Shodhgangotri, e-ShodhSindhu, and others, it has revolutionized the way research and
educational information is disseminated in India.
The initiative of INFLIBNET is significant in bridging the information gap across Indian
universities and colleges, ensuring equitable access to quality academic resources. As the
academic and research landscape continues to expand, the role of INFLIBNET becomes
even more crucial in supporting a knowledge-driven society.

Origin and Objectivesof INFLIBNET
The INFLIBNET Centre was established with the vision of creating a nationwide network of
academic libraries. Its primary objectives include promoting resource sharing, improving
accessibility to information, and reducing the duplication of efforts by creating shared
databases. INFLIBNET serves as a nodal agency to provide academic resources, training,
and infrastructure support to Indian higher education institutions.
Objectives
• Evolve a national network, interconnecting various libraries and information
centres in the country and to improve capability in information handling and
service.
• Provide reliable access to document collection of libraries by creating online
union catalogue of monographs, serials, theses and non-book materials, etc.
• Provide better access to bibliographic and factual numeric databases with
particular emphasis on those databases created indigenously by the Sectoral
Information Centres of NISSAT and UGC Information Centres
• Establish gateways for online accessing of information.
• Provide document delivery service by enriching information sources of libraries
having rich collection in specific subject areas.
• Optimise information resource utilisation through development of conducive
environment for resource sharing.
• Implement computerization of operations and services in the libraries and
information Centres of the country, following a uniform standard.
• Facilitate scientific communication amongst scientists, engineers, researchers
social scientists, academics, faculties and students through electronic mail,
bulletin board, file transfer, computer/audio/video conferencing, etc
• Enable the users disbursed all over the country, irrespective of location and
distance, to have access to information regarding books, monographs
serials, theses and non-book materials by locating the sources wherefrom
available, and to obtain the same through the facilities of new communication
technologies and union catalogue of documents
• Create database of projects, institutions and specialists for providing online
information service.
• Encourage co-operation among libraries, documentation centres and information
centres in the country, so that the resources can be pooled for the benefit of
weaker resource centres.
• Develop suitable professional manpower of appropriate quality to establish,
manage and sustain the INFLIBNET.

Importance in the Academic Ecosystem
INFLIBNET bridges the gap between information seekers and providers. By
offering seamless access to digital resources, it enhances the quality of research
and. The collaborative nature of INFLIBNET ensures that even smaller
institutions and colleges benefit from resources that might otherwise be
inaccessible.
Challenges and Future Prospects
Despite its success, INFLIBNET faces challenges such as limited awareness
among rural institutions, infrastructure gaps, and the need for continuous
funding. However, with increasing digitization and government support,
INFLIBNET is expected to expand its services and strengthen India’s knowledge
infrastructure.
