Education in Bulgaria is compulsory until age 16 and consists of preschool, primary, secondary, and higher education. Preschool is for children ages 3 to 6/7 and is not compulsory, while basic education includes primary schools from grades 1-4, secondary schools from grades 5-8, and secondary schools from grades 9-12 which can be obtained at state, municipal, or private institutions.
