CRITICAL PEDAGOGY
- In his critique of traditional pedagogy Paulo Freire talk
about the ‘banking concept of education’.
- Freire believed that knowledge and culture
is always changing.
- He argues that through traditional education
students were being ‘dehumanized’
- 'problem- posing education' a method of
teaching that emphasizes critical thinking for the
purpose of liberation (Wallerstein 1987).
- Conscientization is ‘the most critical
approach to reality, stripping it down so as to get to
know the myths that deceive and perpetuate the
dominating structure’.
- Freire believed that the educational system
played a central role in maintaining oppression and
thus it had to be reformed in order for things to change
CRITICAL PEDAGOGY
• Knowledge is not an isolated
phenomenon. It comprehends both
action and reflection. In his words the
act of knowing involves the dialectical
movement which goes from action to
reflection and from reflection upon
action to a new action.
