Eds bootcamp handout
1. Library Research Boot Camp: Hands on practice!
Practice conducting searches in EBSCO Discovery Service with this clever handout
provided with permission by Jodi Condit Fagan of James Madison University.
Boot Camp Skill # 1: Narrowing your results with AND
1. Go to the library home page: (enter your Library Home Page URL here)
2. Click on the (enter the name of your EDS link here)
For this section, you are going to pretend you’re writing a 5-page paper summarizing the research
on whether teenagers’ use of sites like Facebook affects their face-to-face interactions and
relationships.
3. Enter the terms online social networking in the first box, noting that the drop-down menu is set to
AND. Click Search and write down the number of search results: __________________
4. Change the “Page Options” to Result Format: Detailed – this will make it easier for you to read about
the results.
5. Now, add the term teenagers in the second row, noting that the drop-down menu is set to AND.
Click Search and write down the number of search results: __________________
6. Now, in the third row, add the term face-to-face. Click Search and write down the number of search
results: __________________
7. Just for fun, click “Add Row” at the end of the third row. Think of an additional term to add in the
fourth row using AND – maybe by looking for an interesting term in your search results.
Boot Camp Skill # 2: Getting more results with OR
1. Delete the term from your “fourth row” and Search again to get back to the number of results you
had in step 6, above. What is the number of results? _______________
2. At the end of the terms in the first search box, add the terms or facebook so that the first box reads
online social networking or facebook. Click Search and write down the number of search results:
_________
3. Let’s try it again: at the end of the terms in the second search box, add the terms or adolescents so
that the box reads teenagers or adolescents. Click Search and write down the number of search
results: _________
4. Click on “Search History” underneath the last row of search boxes, and you will see a history of your
searches. This is useful if you ever want to retrace your steps. Click “Search History” again to
remove the search history from view.

2. Boot Camp Skill #3: Limiting to Scholarly / Peer Reviewed Journals
At this point, you probably have about 60 results (more or less). Pretty good, right? But suppose you
look at your assignment and see you are only supposed to use SCHOLARLY or PEER REVIEWED articles?
1. In the left-hand column, check the “Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals” checkbox. Now how many
results do you have? ___________
2. If you needed more results, you could try adding more synonyms to the search boxes with OR – for
example:
online social networking or facebook or social networking site
Teenagers or adolescents or young adults
face-to-face or physical
Try one of these and write down the number of results: _______________
Boot Camp Skill #4: Getting more results (and saving typing) with the *
1. You should have the terms teenagers or adolescents in your second search box. Replace the “s” in
each word with the * so that the terms read teenager* or adolescent*
2. Click Search and write down the number of search results: _________
Boot Camp Skill #5: Working with books
1. Remove the Scholarly Peer Reviewed Check box. Write down how many results you have:
_____________
2. Now click on “Books” in the left hand column. Write down how many results you have: ______
Not many, huh? Now, here is a glitch to notice in the software (they are working on fixing it). If you
change your search, you will “lose” the Books limiter. Remove the terms in the last row and click
Search to see what I mean. Write down how many results you have: _____________
Notice in the left-hand column that “Books” is no longer limiting your search. Click “Books” again to
re-limit your search. Write down how many results you have: _____________
Boot Camp Skill #6: LAST ONE! Phrase searching
1. Click on the (enter the name of your EDS link here) to start a new search.
2. Your professor has asked you to search for an article called “Cheese is Simple.” First, search on the
terms cheese is simple with no quotation marks. How many results do you have? ______
3. Phrase searching is especially useful when you’re searching for a specific title. Now search on the
terms “cheese is simple” in quotation marks – which # result is the article you seek? __________
