The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) is a 10-item self-report scale used to identify postpartum depression. It can be administered in the first week after delivery or later. Scores above 13 indicate likely depression. The EPDS focuses on how the mother has felt in the past week and is easily administered. It is an effective screening tool but should not override clinical judgement. The EPDS identifies risk of perinatal depression but not other conditions like anxiety disorders.
