- Edgar Allan Poe was born in 1809 in Boston to actors Elizabeth and David Poe. His father abandoned the family and his mother died when he was young, leaving him orphaned.
- Poe was then taken in by John and Frances Allan, though he was never formally adopted. He attended the University of Virginia but had to drop out due to gambling debts.
- Poe struggled to support himself through various jobs including the military and writing. He married his cousin Virginia in 1835 and gained fame for stories such as "The Tell-Tale Heart" and "The Raven," though Virginia died of tuberculosis in 1847. Poe himself died in 1849 under mysterious circumstances.
