Ecology is the study of the relationships between organisms and their environment. An ecosystem is a community of interdependent organisms and their environment, and can vary in size from a puddle to the ocean. Both abiotic (non-living) factors like temperature, water, and sunlight, and biotic (living) factors like predation influence ecosystems. Desert ecosystems are typically hot and dry with little rainfall, and organisms within them have adaptations for water conservation like waxy leaves or living in burrows.
