Why It’s Important to Be a Voice for Kids

DURING ELECTIONS
Just the facts, please.
7 million children without health insurance.
																					
	 3 million children reported abused and neglected each year.

		 16 million children in poverty

 			 2 million children with a parent in prison
																					
				5 million 3- to 5-year-olds unable to take advantage of early learning programs

Why advocate during elections?
         •	 Children’s needs are crowded out by other interests
         •	 If voters want kids’ needs addressed, candidates will listen
Why get involved in federal elections?
Can a non-profit even get involved in elections? YES!


        Just make sure not to:
        •	   endorse candidates for office
        •	   contribute $$$ to candidates
        •	   let candidates use office space, equipment, mailing lists, etc.
        •	   rate candidates
        •	   publicize which candidates share your oganizations views on contested issues

        But feel free to:
        •	   register people to vote (just know how and what is required!)
        •	   distribute non-partisan materials on candidates or ballot measure
        •	   sponsor non-partisan candidate forums or debates subject to limits on lobbying
        •	   help new voters understand elections and the voting process
        •	   provide briefings to all candidates on the organization’s issues
        •	   encourage and help people get to the polls on election day

            The Every Child Matters Education Fund is a
            501(c)(3) non-profit, non-partisan organization
            working to make children, youth, and families a
            national political priority.

            We promote the adoption of smart policies for
            children and youth, including:

               •	 Expanding early-care and learning opportunities
                 and after-school programs
               •	 Preventing violence against children, and
               •	 Alleviating child poverty.
