In many respects, the ‘gifted brain’ resembles an active volcano on the verge of eruption: swirling, chaotic and yearning for release. Stemming the Flow … explores the neuroscience that fuels everything educators admire about the gifted and talented yet tends to wreak emotional havoc. In an effort to facilitate focus, confidence and competence, this presentation explores the arts as a whole and disaggregated by artistic discipline and defines their specific roles—individually and in concert—in stemming the flow of cognitive lava. Resources and recommendations are disaggregated by grade level and unique attention is paid to special populations within the gifted community, including twice exceptional pupils and those who are diverse linguistically and socioeconomically.

Expressive Art Therapy Summer Institute Schedule
- Marie Capizzi
I have participated in a lot of
workshops, retreats, and adventures on
my personal journey, only to say that
the Institute was one of the most
significant and dynamic experiences of
my life because, through the
non-threatening explorations in art,
music, poetry, movement, writing, drama
and ritual, I felt loved, appreciated,
listened to and celebrated so I could
cross thresholds on many levels to gain
practical skills, a broad community, and
a deepened connection to Spirit.

General Info
3. Workshop Descriptions
Introduction and Orientation – Camille Smith, August 3 – 9 a.m.- Noon.
As we open the Institute we will come together as a community to build the foundation for what is to come.
Intentions and Aspirations for Self and Community
Pat Allen and Camille Smith,August 3, 1:00 – 4 p.m.
Students will engage in the Open Studio Process of creating intention, making art, and engaging in witness dialoging with their imagery.
Intentions for self, community, and the Institute will emerge and guide the experience of the journey to come; creating a bridge that carries
through to our closing. This process serves as a foundation for interactions between each individual and their art as well as sets the standard for
non-judgmental, non-analytical encounters with all that is created within the overall Institute program.
The Archetypes Among Us
Pat Allen,August 4 - 5, 9 a.m. – 4 p. m.
There are archetypes pressing forward in the collective consciousness to both challenge and guide us.This workshop will use Collaborative
Inquiry Through Art, a group method based on the Open Studio Process of intention and witness, to call forth these images in our art and, in
small groups, invite them to come alive. Doll making and performance will be our primary way of bringing the archetypes to life. Simple props
and costumes, voice and music, will aid us in creating brief enactments of the wisdom that the dolls hold to share and enjoy.
Brain, Heart, Gut: Expressive Arts as Embodied Knowing
Cathy Malchiodi, August 6 -8, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.Thursday and Friday; 10 a.m. – 5p.m. Saturday
How we make meaning not only emerges from our brains;our hearts and“guts”are also sources of wisdom and embodied knowing. In this hands-on
workshop, concepts of embodiment, Polyvagal Theory, interpersonal neurobiology and somatic psychology are emphasized as the basis for
meaning-making via the expressive arts. Participants will experience a combination of visual art, photography, creative writing, dramatic enactment
and narrative approaches to explore embodied knowing,including:1) how the body (gut) is a resource for self-awareness and resilience; 2) how shared
wisdom illuminates personal narrative and healing through relationship (heart); and 3) how persona (brain) is a source of liberating one’s authentic
story. The approaches presented in this workshop underscore the integrative value of the expressive arts as "brain+heart+gut-wise”interventions.
Saturday and Sunday,August 8 & 9 –Yoga and Meditation, 9 a.m.-10 a.m.
Writing From Darkness to Light, from Heavy to Uplifted:The Power of Metaphor in Transformation
Nessa McCasey,August 9, 10 a.m. -5 p.m.; Monday August 10, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Nessa McCasey is a certified poetry therapist/mentor, who while training for the profession, named the process as a magical carpet ride. Poetry
Therapy/Therapeutic Writing is about transforming words from black and white on paper to riding on a magic carpet wherever one needs to
go, across difficult terrain, through dark canyons, uncharted deep woods. It is more comforting to make these journeys when companioned with
a poem written by another who likely knew the terrain. I will start with an introduction/overview about poetry therapy and then we'll
experience poetry therapy - you will see it in action! We will discuss crossovers between art therapy and poetry therapy and you be able to take
away with you several tried and true poetry therapy facilitations to blend with other creative therapy projects. I do believe it is creatively
professional to have various expressive therapies into our toolboxes, both for our own benefit and our clients.
Soul Collage® at EATSI:Wisdom Within
Anne Parker – August 11, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
We will spend 2 days delving into the soul-nourishing process of SoulCollage®,making cards, journaling with them, doing readings and learning
about our Selves in a deep way. SoulCollage® is a process for creating a unique deck of cards, with each card referring to a part of our selves.A
SoulCollage® Deck is the story of “you.” Joyfully deepen your understanding of the relationships between your personality parts, you and your
family/community/world, and you and your dreams, symbols, and Spirit. We use our cards for our own guidance and as a meditation, as well as a
wonderful tool within a counseling or therapy practice.
Seena Frost, birth mother of this process, says,“It is a tangible way to know yourself in your diversity and depth, and also to show yourself to others. Showing your
deck of SoulCollage® cards to another person can be a profound experience. In like-spirited groups, you can share cards and work with them in many sacred ways.
You can consult them intuitively and discover wisdom within yourself, which will amaze you. Besides all this, creating them is just plain fun!You will love your
deck -- a multi-card Mirror of your Self and your Soul -- whether it consists of three cards or a hundred."
Part I: Darshan and Imaginal Mindfulness:Adoring the Collaborative Emergent
Michael Franklin,August 13 – 15, 9 a.m. – 4 p. m.Thursday and Friday; 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Saturday
From earth, to artistic collaboration, to fire, to stone, to independent object; clay is a material that easily teaches about change. As we will explore
over a three-day period, when clay is formed it transforms into patiently waiting imaginal narratives composed of contexts, emotions, and unique
scenes. When listened to and followed, these emerging images inspire reverent seeing reminiscent of the Darshan experience, which in
Hindu-Yoga traditions means auspicious sight.Mindful, imaginal observational methods will be studied through art-based practices.Materializing
I/Thou relational textures of the therapeutic alliance will also be explored through the recreation of a client-therapist relationship.
Part II: Inner Diversity –Outer Professionalism:Applications of Imaginal Mindfulness for Welcoming Multiple Career Identities
Self-observation through art is explored as a way to investigate our inner life and professional personas. Using clay, we will surface and reanimate
our private stories of inner diversity as they relate to occupational roles.Imaginal mindfulness is the practice that guides the process of welcoming,
observing, and engaging the full democracy of these dialogues.
Saturday August 15 –Yoga and Meditation, 9 a.m.-10 a.m.
The Creative Bridge
Camille Smith,August 16, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
As we bring the Institute to a close, the rich learning, the development of skills, the inspiration leading to action, is integrated. Conscious
cultivation of gratitude will inform our reflection and integration of the many gifts received throughout the Institute. Using a variety of creative
modalities, we will honor the individual and collective experience of Institute participants and ground the learning for personal and professional
practice in the future.
