Eastern Europe: The Journey Begins
Today marks the day of my foray
into Eastern Europe and I am so
excited. The trip started
auspiciously with the Lufthansa
strike wreaking havoc on my travel
time. I will be taking 5 different
flights just to get to our first
destination. I'm leaving Austin and
heading on my first leg to Houston. 8:00 pm
Eastern Europe: The Second Leg
Just arrived at George Bush
International Airport (yuck,
patooowy). I arrived with plenty of
time to make the connecting flight
to Germany. So I stopped off at a
shop called the Camden Food Co.
because it promised to serve the
best local roasting company's
coffee. If I was going to break my
lent, then I figured I might as well
make it good. Well.... It wasn't. You
win some you lose some. I gambled
a bit and did not get any food, but
they served us dinner on the flight. I
enjoyed a well cooked Indian
Vegetarian meal of Chana and
basmati rice and some daal. Yum!
8:30 pm
Traveling Smart: A well packed
personal item
Finally I feel like I got my personal
item right. It is not heavy and has
every I've needed thus far. It's a
work of art! It just took me over 10
years to perfect.
I have water (in one of those
foldable water containers),
paperback books (for when my iPad
starts to kill my eyeballs), my iPad
(loaded with movies, iBooks, and an
audio book, healthy snacks, useful
plane toiletries, wallet, itinerary and
other important docs, phone,
camera, and sunglasses. The only
thing that is missing is my hand
lotion, but I'll live. I'll try to pick one
up in Munich.
Small victories.

1:30 pm
Eastern Europe: Munich Airport
München Flughafen "Franz Josef
Strauß" (MUC)
Very modern looking place, with
some very hot men. Even the
customs agents. The food wasn't
great but they did have Nespresso
station. I should have walked
around more before I got my coffee.
3:00 pm
Eastern Europe: The Third Leg
From Munich to Frankfurt I go!
Strikers, we worked around you!
3:30 pm
Adventures in Food Munich Airport
In an effort to eat healthy on this
trip, I tried to kill the time looking
for the perfect food. I went to a mini
market called Edenska and ended
up with gross bread and cheese. I
was trying to be European and
make a bit of a sandwich like
walking around with a baguette and
good French cheese. Epic fail. The
bread was a sweet bread with
raisins and it broke apart
immediately. The cheese tasted like
nothing. I should have known better
the Germans are not known for
their cheese. I ended getting some
coffee and parfait at the Bistro
Organic and didn't fair that much
better. It wasn't awful but it wasn't
great, the coffee was the best thing
and I it probably was no better than
what I get a Starbucks.
You win some, you lose some.
4:00 pm
The Sights in the Frankfurt Airport
No I did not eat all the food, but I
definitely wanted to! It all looked so
appetizing!
2
7:00 pm
Eastern Europe: The Fourth Leg
A quick layover in Frankfurt airport
showed how hip that airport was.
Lots of cool shops! Way better than
Munich. They even sold the hot
dogs with the hanging condiment
dispensers. This leg will get me into
Poland finally.
7:30 pm
Arrival in Poland!
Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport (GDN)
Wrong city but I'm closer to Kraków!
This means I only have one flight
left!
8:00 pm
My day in a picture...
Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport (GDN)
Yeah, this pretty much sums it up.
Me in Gdansk waiting for a flight.

6:00 am
Good Morning Krakow!
Finally made it! And slept like a log.

7:30 am
First Breakfast in Poland
Campanile
To try I picked up 3 different
cheeses, tuna salad, a corn salad,
yogurt with museli, seeded bread,
and of course coffee.
10:00 am
Auschwitz-Birkenau
Auschwitz
I have wanted to come to
Auschwitz-Birkenau for quite some
time. However to finally be here is
quite surreal.
2:30 pm
Homemade Lunch
Auschwitz
We got a homemade lunch to take
with us to visit Auschwitz today. It
was a cheese and turkey sandwich
with a little candy treat called Wafel
Teatralny. Wafel Teatralny is a candy
from Torun and is made by
Kopernik Candies.
5:00 pm
Polish Coffee Break
Campanile
Polish coffee is quite good, strong
but good. Americanos are tiny here
but yummy.
5:30 pm
Walk around Kazimierz
Kazimierz
I read quite a lot about this part of
the city! This is just a small taste of
it. I'm definitely going back here to
explore.
4
6:00 pm
Love Bridge of Krakow
Fr. Bernatek Footbridge
These bridges are popping up
everywhere. I saw one in Helsinki
last year. I guess this trend is
catching on. I don't know how I feel
about it, but I do love this bridge at
sunset.
8:00 pm
My First Polish Dinner
Kompania Kuflowa Sukiennice
A traditional Polish dinner in the
Market Square. I didn't know what
to expect, but it was pretty damn
good. We had a cold meat plate to
start and them a old Polish stew in a
bread bowl and these amazing
piergoies stuffed with cheese,
mushrooms, and meat.

6:30 am
Early Morning Breakfast
Campanile
Another gorgeous day to try out
some Polish breakfast food. I tried a
tuna salad, a peas and cheese salad,
and of course yogurt and muesli
(my new obsession).
7:00 am
Inside Bazylika Mariacka
Bazylika Mariacka
I went to church today with Donna
and Kelly today. The basilica had
such beautiful interiors. So
beautiful.
10:30 am
Sunday Church Day in Krakow
Krakow Main Square
It's a beautifully cold and snowy day
to walk around the Stari Miasto.
11:00 am
Walking Tour of Stare Miasto
Stare Miasto
I love walking tours because they
give you a greater sense of the
history and the meaning of certain
buildings. Plus they always have
cool insider knowledge.
6
11:30 am
Wawel Castle
Wawel
Finally got to see Wawel Castle, it's a
pretty cool complex of buildings!
12:00 pm
Polish Street Food: Obwarzanek
Stare Miasto
Probably some of the cheapest
street food EVER! These bread
stands are pretty much ALL OVER
the city and they are around all the
time. They are tasty bagel-ish
breads. Really, really good.
12:30 pm
Exploring the Kazimierz
Kazimierz
It is a cold, cold day in Krakow today,
but I am braving the cold
temperatures to explore the old
Jewish Neighborhood of Krakow. It
has become the hip part of town for
artists and the young. You know
how much I love these places.
7
2:00 pm
The "Polish Pizza" Lunch
Zapiekanki Z Pieca Wiki
So when we were walking around
the Kazimierz the day before,
Malvena suggested this great
zapiekanki place in the
neighbhorhood. She said it was the
best so I had to try it.
4:30 pm
Cukiernia Vanilla
Cukiernia Vanilla
I read so much about this place that
I can't believe that I found it. So
cute! I got a small slice of Polish
cheesecake with peaches, szarlotka
(a small apple torte), and an
Americano, of course.
8
5:30 pm
Polish Cheesecake?!
Cukiernia Vanilla
I finally found the famous Polish
Cheesecake! Yum!
6:00 pm
Modern Take on Polish Dinner
Krakodero
This was quite an interesting dinner
because it was less traditional, but
good. We had a meat and cheese
board to start and I had the trout
for my main course. For dinner I
decided to go with the Polish
obsession with plums and had a the
plum crumble with a basil ice
cream.
23 Mar 2015
6:00 am
Early Morning Run around Krakow
Kraków
It took a while, but I finally got my
butt in gear to run around town.

Who can resist a picture on a
beautiful staircase like this?!
12:30 pm
Eating at the Famous Milk Bar
Bar Mleczny Pod Temidą
So I first heard about these places in
a YouTube video about Polish street
food. Apparently these restaurants
are remnants of the Communist Era.
They provide traditional foods at a
low cost. It was really good!
6:30 pm
Poland's Parting Snack
Delikatesy 24
I had to grab something for the road
and some Polish muesli bars
seemed right.
7:00 pm
Best Dinner in Krakow
Morela
As you know I have done my
research about where to eat. Morela
was one of the restaurants that I
found and I am so glad I got to eat
it. I wanted to eat here because they
were known for their Polish
buckwheat dishes and homemade
10
infused vodkas. From the looks of
this place it looks like it would be
ridiculously expensive, but it was
really, really reasonable!
For dinner I had strawberry infused
vodka and bacon and prune
buckwheat with horseradish and
cocktail sauce. This was easily the
BEST restaurant and food!
9:00 pm
Night Train to Budapest
Krakow Train Station
I tried not to have too high
expectations for the night train ride
to Budapest, but it was not that bad.
Don't get me wrong it was no
Hogwart's Express or Oriental
Express, but the beds were
comfortable and the compartments
were a lesson in getting the most
out of a small space. He he.
24 Mar 2015
7:00 am
First View of Budapest
Nyugati pályaudvar
After a long train ride, the site of the

10:00 am
Budapest's Famous Coffee Culture
Budapest
Local recommendations for coffee
places are numerous. I saw this
map I had to stop myself from doing
this tour immediately.
10:30 am
Fekete Cafe
fekete
Budapest has a famous cafe culture.
In fact, you can debate that it has
one of the oldest coffee house
cultures. So I had a list of coffee
shops to test out. The first one I was
dying to try was Fekete Cafe. It
totally did not let down. It was
totally hipster, but with great coffee.
It's a tiny space but it's got a
courtyard and a little front seating
area to people watch on one of
Budapest's busiest streets.
1:30 pm
Sights Around Town
Budapest
Another walking tour of Budapest
has me in love with the city already.
So much to see so little time! Even
with the great transportation
system.

4:30 pm

was the Basilica. It was breathtaking
in there and right in the heart of the
city.
5:00 pm
Christine and the City
Budapest
My aunt always tells me I need
more picture with me in them. She
says its proof I was actually there.
So now I make it a point to have a
few with me in it.
5:30 pm
A Post-Pest Snack
TESCO Expressz
Walked into a Tesco Express and I
could resist... A cinnamon roll!
6:00 pm
Astoria
Astoria
Finally found the young hipster part
of town! You can see the "hipster
culture" all over this place. There
must be some great shops around
here. I need to come back here!
13
8:00 pm
Budapest Nightlife in Astoria
Astoria
Walking the streets of Astoria, there
were tons of options where to go. It
was really hard to choose, but the
students were a lot of help.
8:30 pm
The "Ruin Bar"
Szimpla Kert
Szimpla Bar, one of the famous
"ruin bars" in Budapest. This is a
completely hipster bar in Budapest
and is unique to the city. The
building used to be a set of flats
that has been turned into a eclectic
bar. There are many rooms in this
bar and they all have unique decor
and actvities. Some rooms are just
for bar food while others host live
music. Totally recommend this
place.
10:30 pm
Wandering Budapest by Night
Budapest
Budapest is probably one of the
best lit cities in all the world. It's a
great place to wander around with
your camera and snap shots of the
beauty all around.

12:00 pm
Budapest's Market Hall
City Market
I love an open air market where you
can bye all types of produce, food,
and knick knacks. This one rivals the
one in Barcelona. What's really cool
is that real people still use this as
their market.
2:30 pm

The Cats of Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik
One of the first things you notice in
Dubrovnik is the presence of a large
number of denizen cats. They are
everywhere and they seem to roam
where ever they want. The cats were
pretty friendly and appear to be well
fed. They became one of the sites
that I associate with this beautiful
sea side city.
Don't let them fool you. They own
this place.
20
4:30 pm
Dude, what's in my fridge?
Hotel Lero
Hotel mini bars are always very
interesting to me because it says a
lot about what the host country
think is good in their country. Let's
see what Croatians think is good in
their country:
-Oziujusko Beer
-Jamnica Sparkling Water
-Jana Water
-Pago Juices
-Dalmatino Vodka
-Bakarksa Vodica Champagne
5:00 pm
Afternoon Stroll into the Old Town
Dubrovnik
We arrived into Dubrovnik a little
late. We didn't want to waste a
beautiful afternoon because we
were not sure if we'd see another
beautiful sunset while we were
here.
6:00 pm

The soft light at twilight calms the
soul as you look at it. It lulls the
senses and bring you into a great
sense of peace.

built it with the little technology they
had. It is breathtaking.

Run Dubrovnik Run
Dubrovnik
I have to admit that waking up in
Dubrovnik is not hard. I had a hard
time motivating myself to run in
Krakow and in Budapest, but I didn't
have any difficulties here. There is
nothing like running near the
Adriatic Sea to jump start your
workout.
7:00 am
Wee Hours of the Morning
Stari Grad (Old Town)
I am always curious about what is
going on in the city early in the
morning. Especially on a weekday. It
is interesting to see who is out and
about just after sunrise. It makes
you ask who are these people? Why
are they up? What are they doing?
Such interesting stories.

9:00 am
Visiting the DIU

11:30 am
Rector's Palace
Knežev dvor (Rector's Palace)
Another Venetian influenced
building, the Rector's Palace has
also become the Cultural History
Museum with interesting artifacts
specific to the city.
12:00 pm
Walking on the City Walls
Gradske Zidine (Walls of
Dubrovnik)
Walls of Dubrovnik are what makes
this city so special. To walk on these
centuries old walls is a fantastical
experience because the hard work
is evident in the beauty and utility of
this structure. You can't take a bad
picture from the walls because
every location gives you such a
unique picture.
23
12:30 pm
Art & Artists: Dubrovnik
Gradske Zidine (Walls of
Dubrovnik)
I always try to buy art from the
places I visit. When I look for art I
look for pieces that remind me of
the location I am visiting and that
are made by locals. Anytime I am
able to buy directly from an artist it
is always a rewarding an experience.
This man was selling his pieces on
the wall itself. His pieces spoke to
me and his exuberance sold me.
1:00 pm
Hands Down BEST Lunch in
Dubrovnik
Buffet Skola
So when researching Dubrovnik, I
was surprised to find that there
wasn't a lot of options for "Croatian
Food." All the options seemed really
touristy and not original with all of
the pizza and hamburger options
that came up.
So when our tour guide suggested a
sandwich shop that made Its own
bread, cheese, and prosciutto. I
jumped at the chance. Just off the
main walkway Stradun, you will find
a small restaurant called Buffet
Skola. It's really tiny but AMAZINGLY
good. 2:30 pm
The Ride to the Top
Dubrovnik Cable Car - Bottom
(Grad) Station
The city sits directly at the base of a

Busy Day in the Old Town
Stari Grad (Old Town)
We did a lot today, we visited the
Rector's Palace, the Homeland War
Museum, and we walked the
Medieval Wall. All really cool and
amazing sites to see.
10:00 pm
Homeland War Museum
Tvrđava Imperial (Fort Imperial)
The Homeland War (aka the Balkan
Wars) had a huge impact on
Dubrovnik. The museum sits in the
very fort that was taken over and
used as a base to attack the city
below. The City was under siege for
months and many parts of the
historical city were destroyed.

Filigree Jewelry
Zlatar
The whole time in Dubrovnik, I had
been searching high and low for the
famous filigree jewelry of the area. I
had seen many but was not
impressed. Finally on my last
morning while I'm rushing back to
the hotel I find it! A beautiful little
ring that fit my style. It made me
late to the bus, but it was worth it. I
didn't think I would find it, especially
since it was so early in the morning.
Fate stepped in though.

Don't worry, hip hop is alive and

2:30 pm
The Contrasts of Montenegro
Montenegro
I knew very little of Montenegro. I
had this vision of small villages but
the drive around the bay with the
water lapping mere feet from the
road amazed me. Just driving along
the bay granted so many
opportunities for picture it was hard
to choose. You had these dark
brush covered mountains that rose
from the sea and in the distance
you could see the snow that hugged
the pinnacles.
3:00 pm
Getting on the Bay
We took a boat to man made island,
St. Mary's on the Rock. It is a
gorgeous little white church that sits
in the middle of the most amazing
blue sea that I have seen. Every view
that the island offered was
stunning. The whole time I kept
thinking that this could not be real.
My pictures barely do it justice.
28
4:30 pm
Island Gospa od Skrpjela (Our Lady
of the Rocks)
Gospa od Škrpjela
This is probably one of the most
perfectly placed churches in the
world. It sits in the middle of the
blue, blue water of the bay where
the white walls and green domes
stand out and yet blend in perfectly.
5:00 pm
Christine WAS HERE!
Gospa od Škrpjela
I know it seems silly, but even
though I know the places I've been.
Sometimes it's hard to believe how
blessed I've been. These pictures of
me further proves my presence in
these gorgeous and special
locations.
Thank you God. I'm so blessed to
have these experiences.

definitely yum.
7:00 pm
The Story of Laundry
Pjaca od brašna
I love the story that random shots of
pictures can provide. All the cities
we visit laundry always seems to
decorate the landscape. This one in
Kotor in a pretty historical and
iconic square just cracked me up. I
had to get a shot of it.
8:00 pm
Relaxation after a busy day

Taj Mahal: A Bosnian Final Dinner
Taj Mahal
We all wanted to celebrate our last
night together. Since we had eaten
food from Croatia and Montenegro,
we thought it would only be fair to
try the food from Bosnia.
It was amazing food! Really tasty
and had a Moroccan feel to it. Very
cool.
11:30 pm
Celebrating Jen's Birthday
Taj Mahal
Our last day of the visit was also Jen
Proviser's Birthday. We had to
celebrate at the end of dinner with
the cake that Ivana and Neda so
sweetly gave to Jen. It was event!
The waiters sang with the band and
the candles were like sparklers just
blazing the top of the cake.
The cake was delicious, but made
even better with the Turkish Coffee I
had.

Final Morning
This morning marks the end of this
Eastern European site visit. We work

a whole days worth of traveling.
5:00 am
Oreo Milka Ads
These ads have been all over the
place in Dubrovnik and it worked. I
bought a Milka Oreo candy bar and
the city was sold out of the rest of
them.
7:00 am

Boarding passes back to Austin.
7:30 am
Last bit of Croatia
I had to have a final cup of Croatian
coffee. So I ordered the famous flat
white coffee with coffee from the
Croatian Brand Franck. It was really
smooth and was perfect to soothe
these travel nerves.
12:00 pm
Travel Chemistry
What happens when you get a
group of very different people
together who are expert travelers
and die hard travel enthusiasts?
Awesomeness. That's what.
A lot of times we forget that most of
travel is not about the sites but
about the relationships you develop
with the people you meet or travel
with. You may not always love each
other or spend every waking
moment together, but those
relationships can add or detract
from the experience. The one really
amazing thing that I found was that
we all knew when to separate and
when to hang together. Too much
time together can breed animosity,
but too much time apart can create
more separation and no shared
experiences or inside jokes.
I never take travel chemistry for
granted because I understand how
important it is. This trip had it in
spades and I'm glad I got to
experience Krakow's old town, drink
at one of Budapest's best bars, walk
the medieval walls of Dubrovnik,
and share a piece of Montenegran
Cream Cake with such cool people.

19 Mar 2015 7:30pm Eastern Europe: The Journey Begins Today marks the day of my foray into Eastern Europe and I am so excited. The trip started auspiciously with the Lufthansa strike wreaking havoc on my travel time. I will be taking 5 different flights just to get to our first destination. I'm leaving Austin and heading on my first leg to Houston. 8:00 pm Eastern Europe: The Second Leg Just arrived at George Bush International Airport (yuck, patooowy). I arrived with plenty of time to make the connecting flight to Germany. So I stopped off at a shop called the Camden Food Co. because it promised to serve the best local roasting company's coffee. If I was going to break my lent, then I figured I might as well make it good. Well.... It wasn't. You win some you lose some. I gambled a bit and did not get any food, but they served us dinner on the flight. I enjoyed a well cooked Indian Vegetarian meal of Chana and basmati rice and some daal. Yum! 8:30 pm Traveling Smart: A well packed personal item Finally I feel like I got my personal item right. It is not heavy and has every I've needed thus far. It's a work of art! It just took me over 10 years to perfect. I have water (in one of those foldable water containers), paperback books (for when my iPad starts to kill my eyeballs), my iPad (loaded with movies, iBooks, and an audio book, healthy snacks, useful plane toiletries, wallet, itinerary and other important docs, phone, camera, and sunglasses. The only thing that is missing is my hand lotion, but I'll live. I'll try to pick one up in Munich. Small victories. 1

20 Mar 2015 1:30pm Eastern Europe: Munich Airport München Flughafen "Franz Josef Strauß" (MUC) Very modern looking place, with some very hot men. Even the customs agents. The food wasn't great but they did have Nespresso station. I should have walked around more before I got my coffee. 3:00 pm Eastern Europe: The Third Leg From Munich to Frankfurt I go! Strikers, we worked around you! 3:30 pm Adventures in Food Munich Airport In an effort to eat healthy on this trip, I tried to kill the time looking for the perfect food. I went to a mini market called Edenska and ended up with gross bread and cheese. I was trying to be European and make a bit of a sandwich like walking around with a baguette and good French cheese. Epic fail. The bread was a sweet bread with raisins and it broke apart immediately. The cheese tasted like nothing. I should have known better the Germans are not known for their cheese. I ended getting some coffee and parfait at the Bistro Organic and didn't fair that much better. It wasn't awful but it wasn't great, the coffee was the best thing and I it probably was no better than what I get a Starbucks. You win some, you lose some. 4:00 pm The Sights in the Frankfurt Airport No I did not eat all the food, but I definitely wanted to! It all looked so appetizing! 2

7:00 pm Eastern Europe:The Fourth Leg A quick layover in Frankfurt airport showed how hip that airport was. Lots of cool shops! Way better than Munich. They even sold the hot dogs with the hanging condiment dispensers. This leg will get me into Poland finally. 7:30 pm Arrival in Poland! Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport (GDN) Wrong city but I'm closer to Kraków! This means I only have one flight left! 8:00 pm My day in a picture... Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport (GDN) Yeah, this pretty much sums it up. Me in Gdansk waiting for a flight. 21 Mar 2015 6:00 am Good Morning Krakow! Finally made it! And slept like a log. 3

7:30 am First Breakfastin Poland Campanile To try I picked up 3 different cheeses, tuna salad, a corn salad, yogurt with museli, seeded bread, and of course coffee. 10:00 am Auschwitz-Birkenau Auschwitz I have wanted to come to Auschwitz-Birkenau for quite some time. However to finally be here is quite surreal. 2:30 pm Homemade Lunch Auschwitz We got a homemade lunch to take with us to visit Auschwitz today. It was a cheese and turkey sandwich with a little candy treat called Wafel Teatralny. Wafel Teatralny is a candy from Torun and is made by Kopernik Candies. 5:00 pm Polish Coffee Break Campanile Polish coffee is quite good, strong but good. Americanos are tiny here but yummy. 5:30 pm Walk around Kazimierz Kazimierz I read quite a lot about this part of the city! This is just a small taste of it. I'm definitely going back here to explore. 4

6:00 pm Love Bridgeof Krakow Fr. Bernatek Footbridge These bridges are popping up everywhere. I saw one in Helsinki last year. I guess this trend is catching on. I don't know how I feel about it, but I do love this bridge at sunset. 8:00 pm My First Polish Dinner Kompania Kuflowa Sukiennice A traditional Polish dinner in the Market Square. I didn't know what to expect, but it was pretty damn good. We had a cold meat plate to start and them a old Polish stew in a bread bowl and these amazing piergoies stuffed with cheese, mushrooms, and meat. 5

22 Mar 2015 6:30am Early Morning Breakfast Campanile Another gorgeous day to try out some Polish breakfast food. I tried a tuna salad, a peas and cheese salad, and of course yogurt and muesli (my new obsession). 7:00 am Inside Bazylika Mariacka Bazylika Mariacka I went to church today with Donna and Kelly today. The basilica had such beautiful interiors. So beautiful. 10:30 am Sunday Church Day in Krakow Krakow Main Square It's a beautifully cold and snowy day to walk around the Stari Miasto. 11:00 am Walking Tour of Stare Miasto Stare Miasto I love walking tours because they give you a greater sense of the history and the meaning of certain buildings. Plus they always have cool insider knowledge. 6
  • 8.
11:30 am Wawel Castle Wawel Finallygot to see Wawel Castle, it's a pretty cool complex of buildings! 12:00 pm Polish Street Food: Obwarzanek Stare Miasto Probably some of the cheapest street food EVER! These bread stands are pretty much ALL OVER the city and they are around all the time. They are tasty bagel-ish breads. Really, really good. 12:30 pm Exploring the Kazimierz Kazimierz It is a cold, cold day in Krakow today, but I am braving the cold temperatures to explore the old Jewish Neighborhood of Krakow. It has become the hip part of town for artists and the young. You know how much I love these places. 7
  • 9.
2:00 pm The "PolishPizza" Lunch Zapiekanki Z Pieca Wiki So when we were walking around the Kazimierz the day before, Malvena suggested this great zapiekanki place in the neighbhorhood. She said it was the best so I had to try it. 4:30 pm Cukiernia Vanilla Cukiernia Vanilla I read so much about this place that I can't believe that I found it. So cute! I got a small slice of Polish cheesecake with peaches, szarlotka (a small apple torte), and an Americano, of course. 8
  • 10.
5:30 pm Polish Cheesecake?! CukierniaVanilla I finally found the famous Polish Cheesecake! Yum! 6:00 pm Modern Take on Polish Dinner Krakodero This was quite an interesting dinner because it was less traditional, but good. We had a meat and cheese board to start and I had the trout for my main course. For dinner I decided to go with the Polish obsession with plums and had a the plum crumble with a basil ice cream. 23 Mar 2015 6:00 am Early Morning Run around Krakow Kraków It took a while, but I finally got my butt in gear to run around town. 9:00 am Jagellonian University Uniwersytet Jagielloński Checking out the university buildings and museum. 9

10:00 am Brady bunchFamily Photo Opportunity Uniwersytet Jagielloński Who can resist a picture on a beautiful staircase like this?! 12:30 pm Eating at the Famous Milk Bar Bar Mleczny Pod Temidą So I first heard about these places in a YouTube video about Polish street food. Apparently these restaurants are remnants of the Communist Era. They provide traditional foods at a low cost. It was really good! 6:30 pm Poland's Parting Snack Delikatesy 24 I had to grab something for the road and some Polish muesli bars seemed right. 7:00 pm Best Dinner in Krakow Morela As you know I have done my research about where to eat. Morela was one of the restaurants that I found and I am so glad I got to eat it. I wanted to eat here because they were known for their Polish buckwheat dishes and homemade 10

infused vodkas. Fromthe looks of this place it looks like it would be ridiculously expensive, but it was really, really reasonable! For dinner I had strawberry infused vodka and bacon and prune buckwheat with horseradish and cocktail sauce. This was easily the BEST restaurant and food! 9:00 pm Night Train to Budapest Krakow Train Station I tried not to have too high expectations for the night train ride to Budapest, but it was not that bad. Don't get me wrong it was no Hogwart's Express or Oriental Express, but the beds were comfortable and the compartments were a lesson in getting the most out of a small space. He he. 24 Mar 2015 7:00 am First View of Budapest Nyugati pályaudvar After a long train ride, the site of the Budapest Train Station was a welcome sight. 9:30 am Breakfast in Budapest Hotel Ibis Budapest Centrum First day in Budapest after the night train means that we earned yummy breakfast. 11

10:00 am Budapest's FamousCoffee Culture Budapest Local recommendations for coffee places are numerous. I saw this map I had to stop myself from doing this tour immediately. 10:30 am Fekete Cafe fekete Budapest has a famous cafe culture. In fact, you can debate that it has one of the oldest coffee house cultures. So I had a list of coffee shops to test out. The first one I was dying to try was Fekete Cafe. It totally did not let down. It was totally hipster, but with great coffee. It's a tiny space but it's got a courtyard and a little front seating area to people watch on one of Budapest's busiest streets. 1:30 pm Sights Around Town Budapest Another walking tour of Budapest has me in love with the city already. So much to see so little time! Even with the great transportation system. 12

4:00 pm Obligatory FamilyPhoto Hősök Tere | Heroes Square "Family Photo" in Hősök tere. 4:30 pm St. Stephen's Basilica Szent István Bazilika | St. Stephen's Basilica The last sight on our walking tour was the Basilica. It was breathtaking in there and right in the heart of the city. 5:00 pm Christine and the City Budapest My aunt always tells me I need more picture with me in them. She says its proof I was actually there. So now I make it a point to have a few with me in it. 5:30 pm A Post-Pest Snack TESCO Expressz Walked into a Tesco Express and I could resist... A cinnamon roll! 6:00 pm Astoria Astoria Finally found the young hipster part of town! You can see the "hipster culture" all over this place. There must be some great shops around here. I need to come back here! 13
  • 15.
8:00 pm Budapest Nightlifein Astoria Astoria Walking the streets of Astoria, there were tons of options where to go. It was really hard to choose, but the students were a lot of help. 8:30 pm The "Ruin Bar" Szimpla Kert Szimpla Bar, one of the famous "ruin bars" in Budapest. This is a completely hipster bar in Budapest and is unique to the city. The building used to be a set of flats that has been turned into a eclectic bar. There are many rooms in this bar and they all have unique decor and actvities. Some rooms are just for bar food while others host live music. Totally recommend this place. 10:30 pm Wandering Budapest by Night Budapest Budapest is probably one of the best lit cities in all the world. It's a great place to wander around with your camera and snap shots of the beauty all around. 14

12:00 pm Budapest's MarketHall City Market I love an open air market where you can bye all types of produce, food, and knick knacks. This one rivals the one in Barcelona. What's really cool is that real people still use this as their market. 2:30 pm The making of the kurtoskalacs Molnár's Kürtőskalács Kávézó So cool! 3:00 pm The Famous Kurtoskalaacs Molnár's Kürtőskalács Kávézó Dying, just dying to try these! The illumination of the city is really top notch. I can't believe more cities are not as brilliantly lit. 26 Mar 2015 11:30 am The Hungarian Granola Bar I had a Polish Granola bar, so it's only fair to try the Hungarian ones. 1:00 pm A minute in Zagreb Zagreb Airport (ZAG) Quick lunch in the airport. 19

3:00 pm Flying toDubrovnik Adriatic Sea Another plane to another beautiful city. 3:30 pm Bird's Eye View Adriatic Sea The approach to Dubrovnik from the air. 4:00 pm The Cats of Dubrovnik Dubrovnik One of the first things you notice in Dubrovnik is the presence of a large number of denizen cats. They are everywhere and they seem to roam where ever they want. The cats were pretty friendly and appear to be well fed. They became one of the sites that I associate with this beautiful sea side city. Don't let them fool you. They own this place. 20
  • 22.
4:30 pm Dude, what'sin my fridge? Hotel Lero Hotel mini bars are always very interesting to me because it says a lot about what the host country think is good in their country. Let's see what Croatians think is good in their country: -Oziujusko Beer -Jamnica Sparkling Water -Jana Water -Pago Juices -Dalmatino Vodka -Bakarksa Vodica Champagne 5:00 pm Afternoon Stroll into the Old Town Dubrovnik We arrived into Dubrovnik a little late. We didn't want to waste a beautiful afternoon because we were not sure if we'd see another beautiful sunset while we were here. 6:00 pm Old Town at Twilight Dubrovnik The soft light at twilight calms the soul as you look at it. It lulls the senses and bring you into a great sense of peace. 10:00 pm Walking the Streets of Stari Grad Stari Grad (Old Town) I have never seen a city quite like this. I can't even imagine how they built it with the little technology they had. It is breathtaking. 21
  • 23.
11:00 pm Family PIcturein Dubrovnik Stari Grad (Old Town) Just had our first taste of Croatian Food and now it's time for a walk around the Old Town. 27 Mar 2015 6:30 am Run Dubrovnik Run Dubrovnik I have to admit that waking up in Dubrovnik is not hard. I had a hard time motivating myself to run in Krakow and in Budapest, but I didn't have any difficulties here. There is nothing like running near the Adriatic Sea to jump start your workout. 7:00 am Wee Hours of the Morning Stari Grad (Old Town) I am always curious about what is going on in the city early in the morning. Especially on a weekday. It is interesting to see who is out and about just after sunrise. It makes you ask who are these people? Why are they up? What are they doing? Such interesting stories. 22
  • 24.
9:00 am Visiting theDIU DIU Libertas, International University DIU, shares a space in the Old Town with the Monastery in the Old Town. The students are very lucky to share such a beautiful and peaceful space. 10:30 am Sponza Palace Palača Sponza (Sponza Palace) It is clear from the outside that Sponza Palace has influence from the Venetians. 11:00 am St. Blaise Patron Saint of Dubrovnik Dubrovnik St. Blaise is everywhere in this city. In the pictures and statues, St. Blaise holds the city in one hand and his staff in the other. 11:30 am Rector's Palace Knežev dvor (Rector's Palace) Another Venetian influenced building, the Rector's Palace has also become the Cultural History Museum with interesting artifacts specific to the city. 12:00 pm Walking on the City Walls Gradske Zidine (Walls of Dubrovnik) Walls of Dubrovnik are what makes this city so special. To walk on these centuries old walls is a fantastical experience because the hard work is evident in the beauty and utility of this structure. You can't take a bad picture from the walls because every location gives you such a unique picture. 23
  • 25.
12:30 pm Art &Artists: Dubrovnik Gradske Zidine (Walls of Dubrovnik) I always try to buy art from the places I visit. When I look for art I look for pieces that remind me of the location I am visiting and that are made by locals. Anytime I am able to buy directly from an artist it is always a rewarding an experience. This man was selling his pieces on the wall itself. His pieces spoke to me and his exuberance sold me. 1:00 pm Hands Down BEST Lunch in Dubrovnik Buffet Skola So when researching Dubrovnik, I was surprised to find that there wasn't a lot of options for "Croatian Food." All the options seemed really touristy and not original with all of the pizza and hamburger options that came up. So when our tour guide suggested a sandwich shop that made Its own bread, cheese, and prosciutto. I jumped at the chance. Just off the main walkway Stradun, you will find a small restaurant called Buffet Skola. It's really tiny but AMAZINGLY good. 2:30 pm The Ride to the Top Dubrovnik Cable Car - Bottom (Grad) Station The city sits directly at the base of a tall mountain where a Napolean built fort still stand vigilant over the city. The views from this area is beautiful and you can access it by cable car at the bottom of the Mountain. 24
  • 26.
3:00 pm The viewfrom on High: Dubrovnik Dubrovnik Cable Car - Top (Bosanka) Station I thought the view from the plane was great, but I was wrong. 4:00 pm Family Photo Time! Dubrovnik Cable Car - Top (Bosanka) Station We have to let future generations know that we made it to the top! 9:30 pm Busy Day in the Old Town Stari Grad (Old Town) We did a lot today, we visited the Rector's Palace, the Homeland War Museum, and we walked the Medieval Wall. All really cool and amazing sites to see. 10:00 pm Homeland War Museum Tvrđava Imperial (Fort Imperial) The Homeland War (aka the Balkan Wars) had a huge impact on Dubrovnik. The museum sits in the very fort that was taken over and used as a base to attack the city below. The City was under siege for months and many parts of the historical city were destroyed. 25

10:30 pm Dinner witha View Panorama Restaurant Final farewell dinner on top of the mountain was a cool way to say goodbye to the city. 28 Mar 2015 6:30 am Morning on the Adriatic Adriatic Sea Clouds are in the horizon, but the beauty still comes through. 7:30 am Croatian Breakfast Options Hotel Lero Wow, I never want to leave if dessert is a part of breakfast. Would you? Well, when in Croatia. 8:00 am One last morning in Ragusa Dubrovnik Today is our last morning in Dubrovnik and I am on a mission to take one last walk around. And... if anything is open get some last minute souvenirs. 26

9:00 am Filigree Jewelry Zlatar Thewhole time in Dubrovnik, I had been searching high and low for the famous filigree jewelry of the area. I had seen many but was not impressed. Finally on my last morning while I'm rushing back to the hotel I find it! A beautiful little ring that fit my style. It made me late to the bus, but it was worth it. I didn't think I would find it, especially since it was so early in the morning. Fate stepped in though. 9:30 am Hello Kitty in Croatia Tisak Media I know Hello Kitty is not native to Croatia, but who can resist Hello Kitty on postcards and water?! Not me! Clearly. 10:00 am South to Montenegro The stunning sights on the ride to Kotor City in Montenegro. 11:00 am Rocking my Eastern European Gear As I watch the beautiful scenery go by, I am rocking all of the awesome stuff I got. My leather jacket from a second hand store in Budapest called Cream, my new shades (since I lost my Danh ones)'from Croatia, and my new silver filigree and made ring from Dubrovnik. 27

11:30 am Border Crossing Waitingto get into the Montenegro behind an entire bus of Albanians. Apparently they are very strict because the Albanians have been known to traffic drugs and prostitutes in and out. 12:00 pm Hip Hop in Montenegro Don't worry, hip hop is alive and well in Montenegro. 2:30 pm The Contrasts of Montenegro Montenegro I knew very little of Montenegro. I had this vision of small villages but the drive around the bay with the water lapping mere feet from the road amazed me. Just driving along the bay granted so many opportunities for picture it was hard to choose. You had these dark brush covered mountains that rose from the sea and in the distance you could see the snow that hugged the pinnacles. 3:00 pm Getting on the Bay We took a boat to man made island, St. Mary's on the Rock. It is a gorgeous little white church that sits in the middle of the most amazing blue sea that I have seen. Every view that the island offered was stunning. The whole time I kept thinking that this could not be real. My pictures barely do it justice. 28
  • 30.
4:30 pm Island Gospaod Skrpjela (Our Lady of the Rocks) Gospa od Škrpjela This is probably one of the most perfectly placed churches in the world. It sits in the middle of the blue, blue water of the bay where the white walls and green domes stand out and yet blend in perfectly. 5:00 pm Christine WAS HERE! Gospa od Škrpjela I know it seems silly, but even though I know the places I've been. Sometimes it's hard to believe how blessed I've been. These pictures of me further proves my presence in these gorgeous and special locations. Thank you God. I'm so blessed to have these experiences. 5:30 pm Group Shot! Gospa od Škrpjela It was about time for another group shot. 6:00 pm Kotor City Fortress Walls Climbed a bit of the city walls and got an amazing view of the city. 29
  • 31.
6:30 pm Montenegran Cake DubrovnikAirport (DBV) Our tour guide suggested Forza for a tasty cake made of cream, cherries, and pineapple. It was definitely yum. 7:00 pm The Story of Laundry Pjaca od brašna I love the story that random shots of pictures can provide. All the cities we visit laundry always seems to decorate the landscape. This one in Kotor in a pretty historical and iconic square just cracked me up. I had to get a shot of it. 8:00 pm Relaxation after a busy day Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) Nothing like a hot apple cinnamon tea and a football match to round out the day. 30

10:30 pm Taj Mahal:A Bosnian Final Dinner Taj Mahal We all wanted to celebrate our last night together. Since we had eaten food from Croatia and Montenegro, we thought it would only be fair to try the food from Bosnia. It was amazing food! Really tasty and had a Moroccan feel to it. Very cool. 11:30 pm Celebrating Jen's Birthday Taj Mahal Our last day of the visit was also Jen Proviser's Birthday. We had to celebrate at the end of dinner with the cake that Ivana and Neda so sweetly gave to Jen. It was event! The waiters sang with the band and the candles were like sparklers just blazing the top of the cake. The cake was delicious, but made even better with the Turkish Coffee I had. 31

29 Mar 2015 4:00am Final Morning This morning marks the end of this Eastern European site visit. We work at at 3:30 am to get on the bus at 4 am. I'm sad because I basically have a whole days worth of traveling. 5:00 am Oreo Milka Ads These ads have been all over the place in Dubrovnik and it worked. I bought a Milka Oreo candy bar and the city was sold out of the rest of them. 7:00 am Back to Reality Boarding passes back to Austin. 7:30 am Last bit of Croatia I had to have a final cup of Croatian coffee. So I ordered the famous flat white coffee with coffee from the Croatian Brand Franck. It was really smooth and was perfect to soothe these travel nerves. 12:00 pm Travel Chemistry What happens when you get a group of very different people together who are expert travelers and die hard travel enthusiasts? Awesomeness. That's what. A lot of times we forget that most of travel is not about the sites but about the relationships you develop with the people you meet or travel with. You may not always love each other or spend every waking moment together, but those relationships can add or detract from the experience. The one really amazing thing that I found was that we all knew when to separate and when to hang together. Too much time together can breed animosity, but too much time apart can create more separation and no shared experiences or inside jokes. I never take travel chemistry for granted because I understand how important it is. This trip had it in spades and I'm glad I got to experience Krakow's old town, drink at one of Budapest's best bars, walk the medieval walls of Dubrovnik, and share a piece of Montenegran Cream Cake with such cool people. 32
