EOSTRE
The English word,
“Easter” comes from a
Saxon pagan goddess.
Her name was Eostre
and she was the
“goddess of the
growing light of
spring” in Northern
Europe.

EASTER CHANGE?
The date of Easter
changes each year
as it is based on
the moon. Easter
is celebrated on
the Sunday after

6. THE JEWISH
EASTER The Jewish Easter is called Pesach and
celebrates the liberation of the Hebrews
from Egypt through Moses and brings
together the immolation of the lamb and
the unleavened bread. Pesach means
“pass over” and is derived from the story
of the 10th plague. The Jewish Easter
indicated the liberation of Israel from
slavery under the Egyptians and the
beginning of a new freedom with God to
the promised land. The Jews living within
the borders of Israel celebrate Easter in 7
days. With Christianity Easter means the
passage from death to life for Jesus and
the transition to a new life for Christians.
The Christian Easter represents the
resurrection of Jesus, while the Jewish
Easter represents the liberation from

7. EASTER’S SYMBOLS
The Easter symbols are: the olive, the
egg and chick, the lamb and the bunny.
1) Egg and chick represent the birth
of a new life;
2) Dove represents the Peace;
3) Bells, that on Easter Day, ring in
celebration to announce the
resurrection of Jesus;
4) Olive represents the entry of Jesus
into Jerusalem when the crowd
welcomed him;
5) Lamb is associated with Jesus;
6) Bunny is a symbol of Christ;

pagan customs and the egg, as a
symbol of a new life, came to
represent the Resurrection.

12. EASTER BUNNY
For the pagans the hare
symbolized the goddess Eostre
and fertility. A legend about
Easter says that she found an
injured bird. The only way she
could save the bird was to turn it
into a hare. The little bird
survived as a hare, but kept its
ability to build nests and lay eggs.
The character of an Easter Bunny
began in Germany, where he
delivered Easter treats to children.
He was known as Osterhase. The
children built a nest for him to
leave their eggs in.
