The CBIZ MHM professionals used dumpster diving to evaluate the
organization’s compliance with internal policies for disposing of documents and
other forms of information. During the engagement, our professionals waited until
after company hours, then began rummaging through the plethora of kitchen,
bathroom and business waste removed from the business’s parking lot dumpster.
Within minutes they found documents that had been torn by hand into tiny squares
and others that had been shredded vertically.
After bringing these “destroyed” documents back to their workspace, they were
able to spend more time sifting through them and like a puzzle, reassembling the
torn and shredded pieces into whole documents once again. These documents
contained important information ranging from secured customer emails detailing
overseas travel for an extended period to valid system usernames and passwords.
CBIZ MHM Identifies Opportunities for Improvement
After reassembling the documents, our professionals had stacks of sensitive
personally identifiable customer information, including customer account numbers
and social security numbers, in addition to confidential business information that
some competition would pay to have in their possession.
Our team identified the risks to the business and worked with management to
develop an approach to help prevent the business from becoming a true victim of
social engineering attacks.
