INTRODUCTION TO CLUTCH:
o A clutch is a mechanical device that engages and disengages
power transmission, especially from a drive shaft (driving shaft)
to a driven shaft.
o The clutch acts as a mechanical linkage between
the engine and transmission.
o Briefly disconnects, or separates the engine from
the Transmission system, and therefore the drive wheels,
whenever the pedal is depressed, allowing the driver to
smoothly change gears.
o One shaft is typically attached to an engine and other to power
unit (the driving member). While the other shaft (the driven
member) provides output power for work and typically the
motions involved are rotary.

Principle of Clutch:
o When two revolving friction surfaces are brought into contact
and pressed, then they are united and start to revolve at the
same speed due to the friction force between them.
o The driving member of a clutch is the flywheel mounted on the
engine crankshaft and the driven member is a pressure plate
mounted on the transmission shaft.
o While disengaging, it permits the driver to shift the transmission
into various gear according to operating conditions. While
engaging, the clutch slips momentarily. this provides smooth
engagement and lessens the shock on gears, shaft and other
parts of an automobile.the clutch transmits the power to the
wheel without slipping, in ideal condition.

DUAL CLUTCH TRANSMISSION:
o A dual-clutch transmission (DCT) (sometimes referred to as
a twin-clutch transmission) is a type of multi-
speed vehicle transmission system, that uses two
separate clutches for odd and even gear sets.
o The design is often similar to two separate manual
transmissions with their respective clutches contained within
one housing, and working as one unit.

DUAL CLUTCH TRANSMISSION:
o These are usually operated under automatic conditions.
o Here the clutches are arranged concentrically, larger outer
gears drives the odd numbered gears while smaller inner
gears drive the even numbered gears.

(Bugatti Veyron)
• Up to 1250 Nm
DRY PLATE CLUTCH
• Small vehicles with
lower torque
outputs(Volkswagen
DQ200)
• Up to 250-300 Nm

MERITS & DEMERITS:
MERITS
• No power interruption at
gear shifting.
• Smooth gear shifting.
• Less fuel consumption.
• Better drive and comfort.
DEMERITS
• Expensive to
manufacture.
• Heavier than
conventional manual
transmission.
• Expensive transmission
fluids/lubricants.
