Say
Think
Feel
“Change is big part...”
Homesick
Depression and
sadness at being
away from home
“Finally over it [being homesick]”
“Didn’t have to deal
with being paid”
“Got a little money, started
penny pinching”“Ideas for business
not really
happening...”
“No money or luxury items, so
thinking about doing something”
“Makes you
stronger”
Surprised at
how hard it is Reality sinking in
“Have nothing to
my name...”“Can’t bum off people
forever”
“Maturity stage slowly
developing”
“Had to make decision to
eventually earn Dad’s
respect”
“You have to go out
and make something
of yourself”
A HS diploma is
better than GED
“Was thinking about all the money
from owning a business but reality
covered that one up...”
“Two years before profit...
and a lot of work...”
Embarrassed at not
graduating on time
“Needed diploma...”
“Not able to go
to college...”
“Drug problem
held me back...”
“No girl wants a
broke guy”
“I’m not like my
dad. I’m weak...”
“Plan was to get in with
brother, learn a little, get
experience, make some
money...”
“Moved away to stay
out of trouble”
“Thinking about being
mechanic [like dad]”
“Not cubicle
person...”
“Like being
outside”
“Hard work builds
character”
“People already
had someone
mowing their lawn”
“I guess 09/11 was
the problem”
Feels lost, without
direction
Money is important to
finding a relationship
Thought starting a
company would be easy
Landscape company
idea didn’t work
because of 09/11
Thought there would be lots of
people who couldn’t find
someone to mow their lawns
Hard work builds
character
Thinks he can fall back on
mechanic work because
his dad does it
Startup takes two
years to earn profit
Thinks college or
tech school is no
longer an option
Thinks he failed
because landscaping
was not good idea
Felt unable to control
his behavior
Feeling overwhelmed by
the obstacles ahead
Frustrated that things
are not easier
Unmotivate
d
The effort is not
worth the reward
Longing for a
relationship
Desires a family and
home (i.e. “normal
life”)
Feels he needs
more maturity
No passion for his work
Insights
● He has not found anything to do that he is
passionate about
● He lacks the resources to adequately pursue
his goals (no truck, no money)
● However, the resource problem could be
overcome if he had enough motivation to
suffer for “delayed gratification”
Problem Statement
A young man who wants to work outdoors with his hands in order to start a
family and find his place in the world
Gain greater clarity, learn more about different career options, experiment with
ideas, figure out what is important to him and define an execution plan
His education did not prepare him well to be an unskilled business man, and he
is motivated mostly by money instead of finding a means of earning a living that
he is passionate about, which makes it difficult for him to generate enough
motivation to charge the hill he sees in front of him.
