Dry ice is the solid form of carbon dioxide that does not melt but sublimates directly from a solid to a gas at -109.3°F. It was first observed in 1835 and resembles snow or water ice but is extremely cold to the touch. Dry ice should be handled with insulated gloves and used in a well-ventilated area due to the risk of frostbite, burns and reducing oxygen levels as it sublimates.
