CoderDojoDC 2014 Review and PawelBots Part 1Frank Hunleth
Presentation from the CoderDojoDC meeting on 12/21/2014. This contains a review of the past year of CoderDojoDC and some slides from our first PawelBot build.
UI Patterns: A Practical Toolkit – Jim O'NeillAbove the Fold
“Make it intuitive” is the mantra of every start-up, software company, and new technology. But intuitive means different things to different people – so how do you ensure your designs are intuitive for the right people? In large part, it comes down to the effective use of UI patterns – recurring solutions that solve common design problems.
UI patterns are everywhere, and new ones are being defined all the time. Hundreds of websites now exist to document popular UI patterns of all kinds – web, mobile, responsive, you name it. What’s more, sometimes you’ll need different patterns to solve the same problem, depending on the user's context. To achieve an intuitive UI and meet your users’ expectations, your first challenge is to identify which patterns will work best for the users, and the situation, that you're designing for.
This presentation will walk through the process of evaluating design patterns; as part of this, we’ll dig deeply into several common and emerging UI patterns, focusing on how and when to use them to deliver a great user experience. But of course, UI/UX design is not just about following rules – sometimes you have to break them. We’ll also discuss when to break away from common patterns, and how to keep the experience intuitive when you do so.

"The Museums Computer Group are delighted to announce George Oates as the opening keynote speaker at UKMW14. As the creator of Flickr Commons, she’s had a huge impact on the cultural sector. As if that wasn’t enough, her wider experience has given her an international and interdisciplinary perspective on design and technology, and a sense of which developments in the digital world are important for audiences. With a wave of her magic wand, her keynote will take a long view on the digital heritage sector. Which significant changes in the digital world have affected the UK museum sector in the past few years, and how have cultural organisations prepared themselves for the changes ahead?"

More than bleeps and bloops: UX lessons from game designCatt Small
When UX designers think of borrowing from game design, achievement systems and points are often the first approaches that come to mind. But there's so much more we can learn from games. In this talk, I explore other ways to integrate game design concepts into user experiences. Attendees left with methods to make experiences more engaging – and even game-like – without coming off as gimmicky.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:
Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

54. An effective project manager enables positive
collaboration by identifying actionable units of work
and pairing them with team members who have the
needed skills.
They bring the stone to the soup.

75. Don’t let your client pretend to be the user. Don’t let
the user in user stories mean “I” or “me”. Your
words will inevitably give you away.
