At Appsembler, we've built a system to deploy personalized learning labs using Docker Swarm. Each learning lab consists of arbitrary software running in a Docker container, so each student can have their own isolated environment to learn and experiment. The containers can be paired with another container running the Cloud9 IDE, allowing students to modify code and see the results in real time without the need to install anything on their own system. Our system uses Docker Swarm to deploy and manage containers. To ensure the system is robust, we have automatic failover between Swarm managers (known as high availability). We'll discuss how we're using Consul to implement a highly available Swarm cluster, as well as other features of Swarm that we're using.

The Drupal community is filled with talented engineers, but moving from coder to project manager and community leader can be incredibly difficult. A commonly used version control system in the ColdFusion community is Subversion -- a centralized system that relies on being connected to a central server. The next generation version control systems are “decentralized”, in that version control tasks do not rely on a central server. Decentralized version control systems are more efficient and offer a more practical way of software development. In this session, Indy takes you through the considerations in moving from Subversion to Git, a decentralized version control system. You also get to understand the pros and cons of each and hear of the practical experience of migrating projects to decentralized version control. Version control is often used in conjunction with a testing framework and continuous integration. To complete the picture, Indy walks you through how to integrate Git with a testing framework, MXUnit, and a continuous integration server, Hudson.

Lessons Learned Running Hadoop and Spark in Docker Containers

Many initiatives for running applications inside containers have been scoped to run on a single host. Using Docker containers for large-scale production environments poses interesting challenges, especially when deploying distributed big data applications like Apache Hadoop and Apache Spark. This session at Strata + Hadoop World in New York City (September 2016) explores various solutions and tips to address the challenges encountered while deploying multi-node Hadoop and Spark production workloads using Docker containers. Some of these challenges include container life-cycle management, smart scheduling for optimal resource utilization, network configuration and security, and performance. BlueData has learned firsthand how to address these challenges for Fortune 500 enterprises and government organizations that want to deploy big data workloads using Docker.
