This randomized controlled trial compared tonsillectomy to conservative management in adults with recurrent acute tonsillitis. 452 participants were randomly assigned to either immediate tonsillectomy or conservative management. The primary outcome was the number of sore throat days over 24 months. Patients who received tonsillectomy had fewer sore throat days than those who received conservative management. However, tonsillectomy also carries risks such as postoperative bleeding and pain. The study found that tonsillectomy was clinically effective and cost-effective compared to conservative management for reducing sore throat days in adults with recurrent tonsillitis.
