Presentation on “Drip Irrigation ”
Presented By:
Ms. Amruta D. Ware
(Assistant Professor)
Department of Civil Engineering
2. INTRODUCTION
Irrigation is an artificial application of water to the soil
through various systems of tubes, pumps, and sprays.
Irrigation is normally used in areas where rainfall is
inconsistent or dry conditions Or drought is expected
3. WHAT IS DRIP IRRIGATION?
Drip irrigation is a micro irrigation method in which
the rate of water application is very low and without
any pressure, i.e., drop by drop.
Drip irrigation is based on the basic concept of
irrigating only the root zones of crop, rather than the
entire land surface on which the crop is grown.
Water flows from the emission points through the soil
by capillarity and gravity.
The soil moisture content of the crop root zone is
maintain at near optimum level to facilitate growth
optimum crop and production.
5. NEED OF DRIP IRRIGATION
With competitive use of water and its increasing scarcity,
it has become imperative to economize water use for
optimum productivity. This is possible only through
improved water management and adopting advanced
techniques of irrigation.
One such method of modern irrigation is drip irrigation
system.
The main focus of the project is to enlighten the people
about the advantages of drip irrigation.
6. CLASSIFICATION OF DRIP IRRIGATION
Surface Irrigation Methods-
The water is applied by spreading in it sheets or small
streams on the land to be irrigated.
7. Sub-Surface Irrigation Methods-
The water is applied below the ground surface so that it
is supplied directly to the root zone of the plants.
8. SELECTION OF SITE
Following criteria:
The site should have a minimum cultivable area of
0.5 acres.
The site may be available on least till the project is
completed.
The site must be close to a perennial source of water.
The site must be free from land disputes.
10. ADVANTAGES
1. Enhanced plant growth and Yield.
2. Saving in Water, labor and energy.
3. Most suitable to poor soil.
4. Control of weeds.
5. Economy in culture practice and easy operation.
6. Flexibility in operation.
7. No soil erosion.
8. Easy installation.
11. DISADVANTAGES
1. High cost.
2. Shallow root depth.
3. Leak repair.
4. Maintenance problem due to leakage and plugging.
5. Cannot be implemented for small lands.
12. CONCLUSION
1. Drip irrigation system is an economical and very
efficient system of irrigating for vegetables, row crops
etc.
2. Drip irrigated crops use less water compared to
overhead irrigated crops.
3. Drip irrigation is a latest sub-surface method of
irrigating water with higher water demands in arid
region.
4. It may not be applicable to all farms.
5. Drip irrigation increase yields.
