Dr. Jack Thomas
Dr. Jack Thomas, a deeply experienced and distinguished academic
professional, hails from his hometown of Calhoun, a small town in historic
Lowndes County, Alabama, between Selma and Montgomery, Alabama. His

Criticism) from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, a Master of English
Education from Virginia State University, and a Bachelor of Arts in English
from Alabama A&M University, he establishes himself as a consummate

English Professor to College President, his leadership displays commitment
that cannot be rivaled. In each role, he has employed his deep and extensive

Leadership Role at Western Illinois University
One of Dr. Jack Thomas’s most notable achievements was his tenure as
President of Western Illinois University (WIU). His leadership at WIU espouses
his virtues of wisdom and professional integrity. He managed a nearly $224
million budget through unparalleled state fiscal challenges. Despite these
difficulties, he was responsible for significant accomplishments such as
increasing diversity, creating new academic programs, and improving
corporate, community, and K-12 relations.
His wisdom was reflected in his handling of fiscal and cash flow issues during
Illinois’ financial crisis. This period also saw the creation of a new WIU
campus in Moline, Illinois, and achieving a multi-million dollar capital
campaign goal. Under his leadership, WIU was rated a ‘Best in the Midwest
College’ by the Princeton Review and recognized as a top-tier Midwest
Master’s institution by U.S. News and World Report. His leadership at WIU
paints a detailed picture of a man deeply committed to professional
excellence.
Service on Distinguished Boards and Committees
Beyond his academia, Dr. Thomas has also served on several distinguished
boards and committees, bringing his vast depth of experience, wisdom, and

positions on the Marguerite Casey Foundation Board of Directors, the Stillman
College Board of Trustees, the Illinois Board of Higher Education, the

Dr. Jack Thomas’ research and advocacy have earned him recognition from
academia and beyond. His research on black males in literature has put him
on a platform as a respected scholar. His published book, Within These Gates,
and his book in progress, Leading Through Crisis, reinforce his commitment to
academic excellence and diversity.
