Study Summary
• This is a retrospective cohort with a total of 124
patients who underwent Vbeam Perfecta 595 nm
pulsed-dye laser (PDL) to treat port-wine stains
(PWS) at different body positions from March 2018 to
March 2023. Demographic data, lesions’ positions and
grading, as well as response rate were documented.
(Table 1)
• Photographs were taken before and after each
session, and the severity of the lesion was assessed
based on color and thickness, categorized into
four levels: 1 (pink-red), 2 (dark-red), 3 (purple-
dark), and 4 (purple-dark and/or nodular and
hypertrophic).
• Patients were treated with spot sizes 7 - 10 mm,
fluence 6 - 12 J/cm2
, and pulse duration 0.45 - 10 ms,
along with cryogen cooling. Topical anesthesia was
applied to the lesions 30 min before the treatment. The
treatment sessions occurred monthly, with a variable
number of sessions conducted (6-26 sessions).
• Clinical improvement scores of comparable
photographs were judged independently by two
dermatologists after the series of treatments using a
quartile grading (0: < 20% improvement; 1: 21-40%
improvement; 2: 41-60% improvement; 3: 61-80%
improvement; and 4: >80% improvement).

Results
• The overall response rate across various lesion

Conclusions
The study showed that Vietnamese patients with
Fitzpatrick skin classifications III to IV had an overall
response rate of 73.4% for PWS treatment with PDL,
where the outcomes were predominantly influenced by the
grade of the lesion, with lower-grade lesions achieving
better clearance and requiring fewer treatment
sessions.

Discussion
• Gender and age did not significantly affect the
response rate.
• Although the response rate was not significantly
different across different positions, it could be
observed that the lateral face, ear, breast, and
upper extremity could reach better clinical
improvement than central facial sites or lower
extremity.
• Lesions grades 1 and 2 had a better response with
a shorter period of treatment (6 - 15 treatments). Lesion
grade 3 should be expected to have a response after a
longer duration of treatment. A regimen ≥ 16 treatments
should be expected for treating lesions grade 4.
