Editor's Notes

  • #4 Good morning everyone and thanks for coming. I want to thank CentriLogic in particular for inviting me. With all of the concern about the Patriot Act and where your data resides, it’s great to see a company investing in a data center in Canada, and serving Canadian firms.Over the next twenty minutes or so, I want to talk to you about what an exciting time it is to be in our industry, and some of opportunities we see in the year ahead. There’s a sea change out there, and that’s because we sit at the nexus of 5 ascendant trends that are transforming the way we work, play and live. And so we are going to take a look at these trends together, see some examples of how companies are exploiting them to change the game for IT, and for their businesses.
  • #5 So it’s a fantastic time to be in our industry. We haven’t seen such a fundamental change in IT since this fellow came on the scene. If you recall back to that time, most reporting data came from the data processing department. The PC allowed managers to get that data at their fingertips. And that’s really what the personal computer revolution was all about. Putting more decision making tools into the hands of the user. Now for a while, the MIS department fought it, because they were responsible for safeguarding the companies confidential and sensitive information, and because the PC threatened to disrupt their ability to fulfill their primary mandate of providing computing services to the company. But the best of them began to see that they could help their organization prosper and change in this new paradigm of computing. And that’s where we sit today.
  • #6 What we are seeing right now is the beginning of a Perfect Storm of Technology Trends that are going to impact your organization in ways nobody can fully grasp right now.I organize them around 5 broad and fundamental themes.
  • #7 As we see it, the biggest trend, the trend that is driving all others is Mobility, and here we are seeing two big impacts on the business.  First, you are having to adapt your environment to support the movement towards bring your own device. This is clearly the biggest issue that most of you are dealing with right now. In fact, in a recent study we conducted, fully 77% of CIOs said that it is the number 1 issue they are grappling with.Second, mobility is having a huge impact on apps. It has sparked a positive global renaissance in customer-focused design.
  • #8 In addition mobility is driving Social Media which is changing the way you interact with your customers, your employees and the world in general.
  • #9 Big Data is the next trend we are following.  Over the next decade, we are going to see an estimated 20 to 30-fold increase in the amount of data stored by an organization. Some companies will get buried in it, but the best companies will harness that data to drive better decisions.
  • #10 Cloud is the next big trend we are following and arguably the most disruptive.  As both applications and infrastructure move into the Cloud, we are seeing impacts on:macro issues such as supply chains and changing business models, micro organizational issues, such as what you expect from staff within your IT organization.
  • #11 Finally, this Perfect Storm of Technology Trends is forcing us all to change the way we think about Security and Data Privacy.  So much of the work IT has done in the last decade to protect us from Internet intruders attacking centrally stored and managed data goes out the window when that same data is carried out of the building by employees on their iPads, smartphones or when you move that data into the Cloud.
  • #12 ConclusionsBut, when you take a step back, and look at them collectively…when you consider them as a group, I think you can see the Perfect Storm brewing. They represent the biggest force of change on the not only the IT department, but on your entire business, since the proliferation of the PC.  As CIOs, right now you need to be reconsidering your organization, redefining its structure and mission, and redefining the roles within it.  If you don’t get out in front of it, you run the risk of being irrelevant by the end of the decade.  Intro.Within those 5 themes, there are numerous technologies that are really driving them. Some of them are sexy and hot, such as RIAs and Collaboration.Others, like Data Deduplication, Flash Storage and Predictive Analytics, are old technologies with a modern facelift or a revitalized purpose.Taken individually, I think that most are evolutionary, not revolutionary, but they are all within the scope of IT, and the skills and talents of the IT department.
  • #13 The nice thing is that if you do get out in front of the storm, it will be a rewarding experience for you and your organization.I truly believe that in the next five years we are going to see some CIOs exit, or be exited from the business. At the same time, I think we are going to see some of the most successful CIOs we’ve ever seen. It’s going to be an exhilarating ride.
  • #14 So, let’s start with Mobility.
  • #15 As you can see, windows now accounts for less than 50% of internet connected devices. Down from 90% 4 years ago. 3 years from now that will be less than 20%.Its not that windows is becoming irrelevant, there will still be growth there. However the explosion of other categories of device means that the 5 billion devices connected currently will grow to 20bb – by 2020.Of course this leads to changing expectations for IT, anywhere/anytime support and new security and data concerns
  • #16 And this has led to the trend of your employees bringing their own devices into the workplace. We call these PUDs. Now I don’t know what your stand on this is, but its happening with or without your permission, because the people bringing them in aren’t asking for permission.
  • #17 With everybody connected everywhere and all-the-time, that’s led to our next trend: the Rise of Social Media and Social Business.
  • #18 Anybody in here who thinks this is just a fad that won’t have an impact on business better think again. For example, check out the impact it has had on search in just the last 3 years! Index search engines are losing market share hand-over-fist to social media. Don’t get me wrong, they are still very successful, but they are losing the battle. Google and other search engines had more than 90% of the search market. This year, they have approximately 50%. By next year, index search will only account for 30% of search.
  • #19 So why is that? Google organized and made accessible world’s info. The problem is that in the process, 3 things have happened:First, inundated with junkSecond is that Google has stripped out all personalization Finally, the Google experience is just not good on a smartphone. With the proliferation of mobile devices, users want a better experience. What has replaced Google? It really started with Facebook. There was a time when you started with Google if you were looking for a good Thai restaurant. Now, most people start on a Social Media site like Facebook. And people are using other services, including…Twitter for real-time news – do you know that 32 Billion searches were performed just last month on Twitter alone? Flixster and Rotten Tomatoes for movies, Tripadvisor for travelling, LinkedIn is killing the recruiting industry – LinkedIn recruiter, Realtor.com and its Canadian counterpart MLS for homes, Plenty of Fish for datingYou now understand why Google keeps launching new social apps, Google Buzz, Google Wave and recently Google+ in just the last 3 years – they are trying to recover their search dominance, or at least stem the flow. This is a trend we are following and you should be too. If your web based marketing efforts are focused only around improving your Google search rankings, you are missing half the market today and a larger percentage into the future..
  • #20 When you combine Social Media with mobility, you end up with an exponential increase in unstructured data for your organization to deal with.
  • #21 Between 2006 and 2010, we saw a 500% increase in the amount of digital data.By 2020 it’s estimated that the amount of data will grow between twenty and thirty times what it is today. There are several things driving that trend.First, 80% of new data growth is unstructured content: email, documents, images, video and audio. This is what that looks like… (next slide)
  • #22 To give you an idea... On a daily basis we produce more than ..15 petabytes of new dataThat’s eight times more than the information in all of US libraries EVERY DAY. Put another way, in 2010 as much information was created every 2 days as was created between the dawn of time and 2003.Beyond just all of this growth in unstructured data, legal and regulatory requirements dictate that organizations need to keep more data longer. The challenge we are all facing is how to use the data to drive better business decisions. That’s hard and getting harder. But some companies are harnessing that data to drive better business decisions.
  • #23 Let me tell you a story about the power of big dataI was recently moderating a panel with the CIO of Walmart CanadaThe conversation turned to competition and who Walmart saw as their biggest competitorDollar stores, TargetIt’s Amazon. Think about that for a second. The world’s preeminent, dominant retailer of the last half century is most worried about a company with no bricks and mortar presence whatsoever. Why? It’s because of big data. Amazon knows everything about you. They know what you bought, what you didn’t buy, and what you looked at before you bought. And the thing is, they use that data brilliantly to service you and to get you to buy more.
  • #24 And they’re not done yet. Jeff Bezos still thinks we’ve only touched the surface.Big data is definitely the most bleeding edge of all the trends I’m discussing today. It doesn’t have the hype right now that Mobility or the Cloud do, but I predict that in 2 or 3 years, it is all we will be talking about.
  • #25 The most hyped of all the trends, is Cloud Computing.Cloud Computing is an evolution, not a revolution. Its really the result of a fundamental shift in how we use technology, both in our personal and professional lives. It’s been happening over the last decade or so, with the advent of the www, the proliferation of cheap bandwidth, the rise of the smartphone and the emergence of new ways to communicate, collaborate and do business. For IT, this means we need to provide computing services that are rock solid and secure, to any device, anytime and anywhere. And that’s really where the cloud comes in. Because at its heart, the cloud is simply a utility-based delivery of computing services and a way of optimizing resources, much in the same way we distribute other utilities like water and electricity today. Cloud is really the result of CIOs going through the process of consolidating, virtualizing and dynamically managing infrastructure. That’s often referred to as an internal cloud.
  • #26 And the external cloud is on the rise, so to speak. We believe about 40% of organizations have or are currently deploying a significant business application on the cloud, with another 40% actively considering this. How fast is this moving? In 2011, there was an increase of about 75% in terms of firms moving into the external cloud.
  • #27 So why do organizations look beyond their consolidated and virtualized internal cloud? We have found there are four main drivers:Cyclical or seasonal demand for greater resourcesThe ability to ramp up or down, or to deploy resources in hours rather than weeksTesting a new idea before committing significant internal resourcesA standalone or niche application with little or no requirement to integrate with other systems. In each of these situations, companies value the convenience, simplicity and economic value proposition cloud can provide.
  • #28 $300M in sales – 80 years in business – focused on the high end of paper businessDifficult industry with Disruptive Trends – Rising Energy, Digitization, and SustainabilityDemand dropping, profits dropping and the trend was accelerating – call to action for very survivalPaul Stamas, VP of IT, answered the callEmbraced the Internet and used the Cloud to transform themselves from a product-based firm to a services-based firmE.g. partnering with e-commerce companies to produce high end digital booksMore than 100 B2B connections and 6 different SAAS offerings – Cloud and SOA abstract the user from the technology, but when you have multiple cloud offerings, everybody starts talking about the technology againPaul’s solution was to leave all of that integration work to an emerging type of business that we call Data Integration as a Service, but I’ve also heard called a Cloud Service Broker or a Cloud Broker. He pays Liaison Technologies a flat monthly fee and they worry about all of the integration. As a result, Mohawk has just had it’s best quarter in history, and is projecting it’s best year in history by a factor of 2x.And just recently, they have just relaunched and rebranded their company to reflect their transformation to a service-based company
  • #29 And Paul’s experience is consistent with our research. Whether you are looking at a small deployment or a large one, Data Integration as a Service is a cost effective alternative.
  • #30 And the options are expanding daily as traditional on-premise vendors begin to move their offerings into the cloud.
  • #31 To bring this full circle, every organization needs to be the Masters of the Cloud.Don’t ignore and let it go away. Do whatever you can to facilitate business’ requests to adopt cloud services because otherwise they’ll do it without you and look to you to support it down the road.
  • #32 So those are the big five as we see them.
  • #33 And when we asked our clients, their experience echoed the way we see the world.Cloud and Mobility, both with relatively high rates of adoption, have shown positive impacts on the success of the IT department. Security is seen as an important area of investment, as a defensive mechanism. Finally, social media scores low in expectations and impact. For the most part, we see this as a result of the fact that most businesses still see this as a consumer play, and have yet to determine how to integrate it so that it adds value to their organization. That will change in the next year or two.In the end, though what does this mean to you and the way you organize and deploy your resources?
  • #34 First, this Perfect Storm of Technology Trends is going to force you to Change What You Manage. Managing in an environment that supports always connected devices inside and outside of the firewall likely means increased complexity in how applications and infrastructure are integrated and managed. You are or will likely manage cloud-based solutions internally as well as relying on multiple thirty-party products. It will be about managing people and processes, not just technology
  • #35 Second, you need to Change How You Are Delivering IT.You deliver IT today with an emphasis on managing infrastructure and applications. However as we move to a more utility like model, you will increasingly use outside vendors to do this. This means the emergence of vendor portfolio management as a capability your team will need to develop. And because advantage will be gained by using technology to advance integration of technology across business processes, you can redeploy the people you had managing things towards the task of better business analysis. As CIOs, this is something you need to be planning if you are not already. As painful as the exercise may be, we recommend starting simple, and figuring out how many people you will need in each role. But, remember the new paradigm is all about reorganizing resources to add more value to the business and may not require actual staff cuts. In a recent North American study*, only 26% decreased hiring efforts, while 42% had no impact and 32% expected an increase.
  • #36 Let me close with a thought. Many of you will be familiar with the futurist and novelist William Gibson. In his 1984 novel Neuromancer, he coined the term “cyberspace” and described a system of interconnected computers that would become the foundation for what we now call the World Wide Web. Gibson has said “The future is already here. It’s just not evenly distributed.” The challenge for each of you, then is to take the component parts, and weave them together in a meaningful and impactful way, to enable the organizations you work for to move quickly and effectively into that future.
