Think about this question...
What does it mean to find the volume of a
rectangular prism?

1. Explain why your method works.
Review
Dimensions of a rectangular prism show its
length, width, and height.
Look at this rectangular prism.
The length is 6 cm. The width is 4 cm.
The height is 5 cm. We would say this
is a 6 cm by 4 cm by 5 cm rectangular
prism or a 6 cm X 4 cm X 5 cm.
Describe the Dimensions
Turn to your partner and describe the
dimensions of this rectangular prism.
The Packaging Factory
The packaging factory wants us to build a box that holds
twice as many cubes as a 2 X 3 X 5.
How can we find out the dimensions of a box that holds
twice as many? Brainstorm ideas with your group.
Watch a video on doubling the volume.
Notice in the video the teachers made the
rectangular prism 8 times bigger and the
Package Factory only wants the box to hold
twice as many cubes as a 2 X 3 X 5 box.
Now, look back at your previous ideas and
make necessary changes.
See how many boxes you can find that will hold
twice as many cubes and list the dimensions.
New Dimensions
Something to think about:
● Some of the dimensions listed, only have one dimension that is doubled.
● Product of each set of dimensions is 60.
● Each of the dimensions listed are a factor of 60.
● Some of the numbers (2, 4, 5) show up in almost all of the dimensions
listed.
