Interstate Brands Corporation acquired the rights to use the name "Dolly Madison" for their franchised products sometime between 1926-1930 from a Boston firm. While not directly named after First Lady Dolley Madison, the company believes their name is derived from her due to her reputation as a charming hostess and baker. In 1934, another company called Dolly Madison Industries filed a lawsuit against Interstate Brands for using the name, but they were allowed to retain it since they do not produce ice cream like Dolly Madison Industries.
