After reading this article, the author would like to establish the Incompatibility between what God was asking to have (sacrificing all the first born animals which were set apart when the worms opened; fresh/brand new) and the leaven/yeast (old stuff).
Does Our Lord really dislike yeast (leaven) and why
1. DoesGOD really“dislike”leaven(yeast)?Why?
Afterreadingthisarticle, the author wouldlike toestablishthe Incompatibility betweenwhatGodwas
askingto have (sacrificingall the firstbornanimals whichweresetapart whenthe worms opened;
fresh/brand new) andthe leaven/yeast(oldstuff).
There are manyplacesinthe OldTestamentmentionedthatonlycanuse “unleavened”breadforthe
offering.ForexampleinLeviticus2:11 (ESV)
“No grainofferingthatyoubringto the Lord shall be made withleaven, foryoushall burnnoleavennor
any honeyasa foodofferingtothe Lord.”
There are manyotherplacesalsomentionedthisGod’scommand.However,there are twoplaces
(Leviticus 7:13 and23:17) that God especiallyorderedthatleavenedbreadcanbe used forthe offering
to God; Leviticus23:16-20 (ESV)
“16 You shall countfiftydaysto the day afterthe seventhSabbath.Thenyoushall presentagrain
offeringof newgraintothe Lord.
17 You shall bringfromyour dwellingplaces twoloavesofbread to be waved, made of twotenthsof an
ephah.Theyshall be of fine flour, andtheyshall be bakedwith leaven, asfirstfruitsto the Lord.
18 Andyou shall presentwiththe bread sevenlambsayearold withoutblemish, andone bull fromthe
herdand tworams. They shall be a burnt offeringto the Lord, withtheirgrain offeringandtheir drink
offerings,afoodofferingwithapleasingaromatothe Lord.
19 Andyou shall offerone male goatfora sin offering, andtwomale lambsayearoldas a sacrifice of
peace offerings.
20 Andthe priestshall wave themwiththe bread of the firstfruitsas a wave offering before the Lord,
withthe two lambs. They shall be holytothe Lord for the priest.2”
The bread inverse 18 shouldmeanthe breadwhichmeetsthe requirementforGrainoffering;noyeast.
In this“special”grainoffering(accompanyingwithsinoffering),the leavenedbreadswereonlyusedin
wave offering.
Anythingwhichcontainedleavenshouldnotbe use to the Lord as burntoffer.
Leviticus7:12-17 recordedthe rulesforpeace offering:
“12 If he offersitfor a thanksgiving, thenhe shall offerwiththe thanksgivingsacrifice unleavenedloaves
mixedwithoil,unleavenedwaferssmearedwithoil,andloavesof fine flourwellmixedwithoil.
13 With the sacrifice of hispeace offeringsforthanksgivinghe shall bring hisofferingwithloavesof
leavenedbread.
2. 14 Andfrom ithe shall offerone loaf from eachoffering,as a giftto the Lord. Itshall belongto the
priestwho throwsthe bloodof the peace offerings.
15 Andthe fleshof the sacrifice of his peace offeringsfor thanksgivingshall be eatenon the day of his
offering. He shall notleave anyof ituntil the morning.
16 But if the sacrifice of hisofferingisavow offeringora freewill offering, itshall be eatenonthe day
that he offershissacrifice, andonthe nextdaywhat remainsof itshall be eaten.
17 But what remainsof the fleshofthe sacrifice on the third day shall be burnedup withfire.”
Two thingsthatwe can observe fromthe above verses:
(1) The leavenedbreadsbelongtothe priestwhoconductsthe offering;notGod,
(2) All the sacrifice will notbe burnonthe altar (Exodus20:24) towardour Lord.
From Cambridge Bible forSchoolsandColleges:
“withleaven of thatwhichisleavened(R.V.).“Leaven,”—atermincluding,asLeviticus2:11 shews,not
onlyyeast,butalsodibsor grape-honey,—wasforbiddenasaningredientinsacrifices(Exodus23:18;
Leviticus2:11; Leviticus6:17) on account of itsliabilitytoputrefy.InLeviticus7:14 cakesof leavened
breadare, itis true,to be offeredwiththe thanksgivingoffering:theyare not, however, tobe consumed
uponthe altar, but tobe eatenbythe offerer, withthe fleshof the offering, atasacrificial feast:the
leavenwasthusnota part of the sacrifice itself.”

These twoloavesof breadbakedwithleaven were onlyusedforwave offering(shakingthem) infromof
our Lord, butnot burningthemas part of the burnt offering.
Thennowwe may say that God DOES NOT “dislike”the yeastsince Mosesrecordedclearlythat
“…as a giftto the Lord…”, but “DOES NOTWANT” it since itrecordedinbothplacesmentionedabove
that these leavenedbreadshall belongtothe offeringpriestandwouldnotbe burnedonthe altar as
sacrifice aspart of the burnt offering, therefore wouldnot reachto HIM.
3. But whyyoumay ask?
We mayget some of the answerfromNew Testament 1 Corinthians5:7 (ESV)
“7 Cleanse outthe oldleaventhat youmay be a newlump,as you reallyare unleavened.ForChrist, our
Passoverlamb,hasbeensacrificed.”
The leavenhasto come from the olddough(inthe OldTestament);like ourold-self withsin (evenat
presenttime).
For the grain offering,Godwanteverythingtobe “firstborn(newlyharvestedgrain)” withoutolddough
(symbolizingsin/old-self). InExodus12:15-20:
15 Sevendaysyoushall eatunleavenedbread.Onthe firstdayyoushall remove leavenoutof your
houses,forif anyone eatswhatisleavened,fromthe firstdayuntil the seventhday,thatpersonshall be
cut off from Israel.
16 On the firstday youshall holda holyassembly, andonthe seventhdayaholyassembly.Nowork
shall be done onthose days. But what everyone needstoeat, thatalone maybe preparedbyyou.
17 Andyou shall observe the Feastof UnleavenedBread, foronthisverydayI brought your hostsout of
the landof Egypt. Therefore youshall observe thisday, throughoutyourgenerations, asastatute
forever.
18 In the firstmonth, fromthe fourteenthdayof the monthat evening, youshall eatunleavenedbread
until the twenty-firstdayof the monthat evening.
19 For sevendaysnoleavenistobe foundinyourhouses.If anyone eatswhatisleavened,thatperson
will be cutoff from the congregationof Israel, whetherhe isa sojournerora native of the land.
20 You shall eatnothingleavened;inall yourdwellingplacesyoushall eatunleavenedbread.”
Mosesstatedthe reasonwhytheybakedunleavenedcakesasfollows:
Exodus12:39 (ESV)
“39 And theybakedunleavenedcakesof the doughthattheyhad broughtout of Egypt, forit was not
leavened, because theywere thrustoutof Egyptand couldnot wait, norhad theypreparedany
provisionsforthemselves.”
It isbecause time didnotallowthemtodo so.
4. But one more importantreason mightbe recorded inExodus13: 2-3 and 11-15
“2 “Consecrate to me all the firstborn.Whateveristhe firstto openthe wombamongthe people of
Israel, bothof man and of beast,is mine.
3 ThenMosessaidto the people,“Rememberthisdayinwhichyoucame out fromEgypt, outof the
house of slavery, forbya stronghandthe Lord broughtyouout fromthisplace. No leavenedbreadshall
be eaten.
11 “Whenthe Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites,as he swore to youand your fathers, and
shall give itto you,
12 you shall setapart to the Lord all that first opensthe womb. All the firstbornof your animals that
are males shall be the Lord's.
13 Everyfirstbornof a donkeyyoushall redeemwithalamb, orif youwill notredeemityoushall break
itsneck. Every firstborn of man among your sons you shall redeem.
14 Andwhenintime to come your sonasks you,‘Whatdoesthismean?’youshall say to him, ‘Bya
stronghand the Lord broughtus out of Egypt, fromthe house of slavery.
15 For whenPharaohstubbornlyrefusedtoletusgo, the Lord killedall the firstborninthe landof Egypt,
boththe firstbornof manand the firstbornof animals. Therefore Isacrifice to the Lord all the males
that firstopen the womb, but all the firstbornof my sons I redeem.’16 It shall be as a mark on your
handor frontletsbetweenyoureyes, forbyastrong handthe Lord broughtus outof Egypt.”
What God wouldtake is all the firstborn malesof Israel, butinstead, HEallowsIsraelisredeemedtheir
firstborn male by sacrificingall the newlyfirstborn(setapart whenthe worm opens) male animals
aftertheyenteredCanaan. Leaven(olddough /yeast) “contains” old stuff and definitelywouldnotbe
whatGod wouldlike toreceive.Similarconceptappears in1Corinthians5:7 as mentionedabove.
