Two to four is the magic number – playing games togetherLorenzo Pilia
Video games that can be played by two or more people in the same room, also known as local multiplayer games, are going through a very popular phase. More and more independent developers are creating this sort of games specifically for smartphones and tablets, taking advantage of the new opportunities offered by touch screens – in this talk we're looking at some of the most successful and interesting examples.
I gave this talk on July 20 2013 during Republika Fest in Rijeka, Croatia, as part of the A MAZE. Indie Pop-Up event, where I also curated a small exhibition of local multiplayer games for touch screen devices. For the occasion I launched www.localmultiplayer.com – a website with resources about this specific kind of games.

INTERVIEWER
What drives you to play Pokemon?
ADAM
I really enjoy the idea of going on
a long adventure in a fantasy
world, as it provides an escape
from reality that i can
then immerse myself into that
universe.
INTERVIEWER
Where do you play Pokemon and how
long for?
ADAM
I enjoy playing pokemon in my room,
on the bus and sometimes if I have
a free in my timetable. I play it
because it is entertaining. It
depends on how long I have free but
normally about an hour.
INTERVIEWER
Do they think you are
obsessed/addicted?
ADAM
I don't think so because I never
feel like I am dependent on playing
to enjoy me free time. But when the
games first come out I can play for
much longer as it is a new
experience.
INTERVIEWER
What do you think makes Pokemon fun
to play?
ADAM
I think pokemon is fun because of
the adventure element of it, it is
also very satisfying levels up as
it gives you a sense of
accomplishment. Also in the games
there is the ideal if beating the
elite four and the champion you is
your rival from the begging but

there is also the added incentive
of ending the cooperation that is
trying to manipulate the legendary
pokemon for evil uses.
INTERVIEWER
Have or do you play the Pokemon
card game?
ADAM
No I never really got into the
game. I did try, but to buy all of
the packs and to find someone else
to play with when no one I know was
interested in the game I found it
to much of a hassle.
INTERVIEWER
A well-known phrase from Pokemon is
'Gotta catch them all'. Have you
ever tried to catch them all?
ADAM
I have tried to catch them all in
each game I own but because of
restrictions and the amount of
pokemon I ended up losing
motivation. The restrictions are
that certain pokemon are only
available in a certain game.
INTERVIEWER
Do you have a
favourite Pokemon or Pokemon type?
ADAM
My favourite pokemon type is
electric because the animations for
there moves look cool and they are
only week to one other type. My
favourite pokemon is luxray because
I like his design i think it looks
cool.
INTERVIEWER
Do you feel that the games have
an influence on children? Is
this positive or negative?
ADAM
Yes I do think the games have an
impact. I think it's positive

ADAM (CONT'D)
because it teaches them
companionship and compassion
towards there pokemon and it makes
them think more strategically. I
understand why some people would
think that it's negative because
you are making animals fight but i
think that because the do not look
like animals of this world that
children could tell the difference.
There is also a big emphasis on how
the pokemon are our friends and we
should treat them respectfully.
INTERVIEWER
Do you watch the anime or just play
the games or both?
ADAM
I do both I do watch the anime but
I do not watch the anime
passionately every week the new
episodes come out. But when i was
younger i used to watch the show
and others like it and really
enjoyed them as it was something
really close to the games.
INTERVIEWER
Do you think that the Pokemon
franchise end in the near future?
ADAM
I think it will end eventually, all
things have to, but not any time
soon as the franchise is so well
known and has a large presence in
today, as it has a large fanbase
and more children to find the games
to play them. Also with the amount
of merchandise available I don't
think it will be forgotten soon.
