Mapping the Blind Spots (PhotoEspaña 2014)
Two long standing photo collectives collaborate in a publishing and exhibition project involving the recognition
of their archives.
In the last years, both photography groups have researched on historical, socio-cultural and geographical
aspects of their immediate surroundings: Eastern Europe (in case of SPUTNIK) and Western Europe (in case of
NOPHOTO).

Though photography began for Piotr Malecki as a way of filling the slack hours after school it soon developed
into a full-blown passion, and completely defined his professional life.
Choosing first to study film-making at Silesian University in Katowice, Piotr then moved to the UK to study
photography in Bournemouth, returning to Poland as a staff photographer for the weekly news magazine
Wprost. He soon recognized that in order to tell stories of importance, and to satiate his wanderlust he
needed to go freelance, a decision which has taken him across Europe, Russia, China, Palestine, and the USA.
Piotr’s work has been published in the New York Times, the Guardian, Der Spiegel, Stern, Newsweek Japan
and Poland, Polityka Magazine, and National Geographic Poland.

The Call Centre
Call centre consultants are like doctors - they need to get under the client's skin to find out the most effective
way of selling a product or getting valuable feedback. Call centre work is readily available and in most cases
doesn't require any qualifications or previous experience. What counts are interpersonal skills and
adaptability to different situations and character types.
The proliferation of call centers, dating back to the 1990s and the spread of computer technology, has gone
hand in hand with fierce cost cutting and competition for custom in Western economies. Call centers in places
as diverse as southern India and Malaysia now farm out their consultants to numerous clients at the same
time and service a diverse range of industries, from mobile phone operators and cosmetics retailers to banks
and debt consolidation agencies.

Pep Bonet (Mallorca, 1974) is an award-winning filmmaker and photographer who has traveled extensively
capturing profound moments that represent the unbalanced world in which we live. His longer-term projects
focus on African issues, with his most well known project being “Faith in Chaos”, a photo essay on the
aftermath of the war in Sierra Leone. Pep's ongoing work around the globe on HIV/Aids has led to several
photography books and many exhibitions worldwide.
http://noorimages.com/photographer/bonet/
Being extremely fascinated by the fact that HDDSLR photo cameras nowadays also have the capability of
shooting HD films, Pep crafted himself into shooting documentaries with DSLR cameras. This resulted in
several short documentary films, amongst which the award winning ‘Into the Shadows’, a pursuit into the lives
of hundreds of thousands of Africans living in the inner city of Johannesburg.
Into the shadows Online Short , 2013 , (1st prize World Press Photo)
People from neighboring countries move to South Africa in search of a better life. In inner-city Johannesburg,
many of them struggle for acceptance in the face of discrimination, but are resourceful and persistent in their
hope for the future.

Poland has one of the highest numbers of lakes in the world and the current developments of expanding
mining throughout the country will have a serious impact on these natural resources. Devastating effects can
occur on the fragile ecosystem endangering several species. Marshes and peat bogs can also dry up, causing
irreversible destruction.
Researchers believe that the impact of these new mining operations will affect not only surrounding areas but
also regions hundreds of kilometers away. If mining companies continue to refuse considering these facts and
reevaluate their plans, the damage caused by opencast mining in Poland might have only begun.

Today more and more people work in big corporations where they spend most of the day. The office becomes
their home and their apartments turn into bedrooms. Cool open space areas in big corporations are always
the same, regardless of their geographic location or economic context. When empty, they seem like the
essence of mediocrity and homogenization. Luckily, when filled with people, they show their more human
dimension.

Poland. In search of diamonds
This is a country where anything's allowed. Here every, even the wildest relationship, becomes flesh. Our
version of beauty has nothing in common with the utterly clichéd classic of Tuscany or Andalucia. Our beauty
is an elixir for the initiated, those prepared for a surprise, for difficulty, a bold metaphor, a combination that
seems to come from one's wildest dreams. Poland is a land of cowboys, galloping dinosaurs, camels, dwarves,
plastic bison and the biggest Jesus in the world, a land where any, even the most fantastical architectural form
is allowed, a land like a great big question mark. A land of great adventure.

Jordi Bernadó a member of VU Agency. It´s interested in photography as a way to conceive the city, the
architecture and the urban layout and understands the photographic discipline as a way of knowledge. His
ambition and rigour when he is decoding the surroundings has transcended in a very personal and huge but
complex work. Contradiction, absurdity, hazard and often irony are the sources which Jordi Bernadó flirts with
to point out what’s around him. He won the Fotopress scholarship in 1993 and he was granted by Beca Endesa

Beyond Bernado's vision of the superficial world and the satire he offers us, we are also given a glimpse of his
inspired personality on this guided tour of the 20th-century playwrights who have brought the senseless and
the ridiculous to the stage, as embodied in the writings of Cervantes and the paintings of Goya. And behind
this cumulus of symbols, there is the depiction of absurdity.

Paraguay
It is a story about us and our knowledge in the Google's reality. I chose Paraguay because name of this country
seems to be familiar for everyone, but , on the other hand, it is mentioned very rarely in mass media. I asked
my friends what they know about Paraguay and how they imagine this country. I connected their expectations
with pictures taken by me in my neighborhood which symbolically correspond to what my friends think about
the distant and unknown Paraguay.
This is the series of pictures about lack of knowledge in the world of information.

Feature: War Prisoner (Libya)
http://www.manubrabo.eu/feature-war-prisoner-libya
This project is a personal and intuitive attempt in build a narration about all these ones who, ironically, have
lost their freedom because of a war created to bring precisely this: “freedom”
This story is mainly motivated because of two experience, strongly linked together. One is my capture and
captivity by troops loyalist to Gadafi. The other one is the verification, not long time after I was released, of
the brutal treatment the rebels where giving to the prisoners loyalist to Gadafi´s regime.
Therefore, in addition to trying to talk about the situation of this prisoners, this essay wants to talk about the
anger, the fury, the abuse, the torture … but specially, about the self-annihilation by the
mutilation of big guest of our desires as human beings: freedom.
So, offering my personal experience I can bring the situation of the prisoners closer, make it more
comprehensible… just as the images of the prisoners can shed some light on my experience.

World Press Photo created in 2011 a new category called Multimedia because they were noting that
professionals were working on that thin line that separate photojournalism of audiovisual documentary.
Analyzing what they were doing, they saw that their work had features that could not be framed in the
traditional reporting journalism.

Soth:
“I believe that photography is essentially non-
narrative. That, while it aches to tell stories, it doesn’t
really tell stories that have a beginning, middle and
end. This has constantly frustrated me about the
medium, and I’ve been constantly battling it. What
I’ve come up with, is that when I’m looking at a
photographer’s work, I’m looking as much at that
person’s experience as a photographer in the world,
almost as if they are a first-person narrator, as I’m
looking at the subjects of the photographs.”

  • 34. Though photography began for Piotr Malecki as a way of filling the slack hours after school it soon developed into a full-blown passion, and completely defined his professional life. Choosing first to study film-making at Silesian University in Katowice, Piotr then moved to the UK to study photography in Bournemouth, returning to Poland as a staff photographer for the weekly news magazine Wprost. He soon recognized that in order to tell stories of importance, and to satiate his wanderlust he needed to go freelance, a decision which has taken him across Europe, Russia, China, Palestine, and the USA. Piotr’s work has been published in the New York Times, the Guardian, Der Spiegel, Stern, Newsweek Japan and Poland, Polityka Magazine, and National Geographic Poland. http://www.panos.co.uk/stories/1-5-1317-1823-PMA/Piotr-Malecki/ Though photography began for Piotr Malecki as a way of filling the slack hours after school it soon developed into a full-blown passion, and completely defined his professional life. • 35. The Call Centre Call centre consultants are like doctors - they need to get under the client's skin to find out the most effective way of selling a product or getting valuable feedback. Call centre work is readily available and in most cases doesn't require any qualifications or previous experience. What counts are interpersonal skills and adaptability to different situations and character types. The proliferation of call centers, dating back to the 1990s and the spread of computer technology, has gone hand in hand with fierce cost cutting and competition for custom in Western economies. Call centers in places as diverse as southern India and Malaysia now farm out their consultants to numerous clients at the same time and service a diverse range of industries, from mobile phone operators and cosmetics retailers to banks and debt consolidation agencies. His longer-term projects focus on African issues, with his most well known project being “Faith in Chaos”, a photo essay on the aftermath of the war in Sierra Leone. Pep's ongoing work around the globe on HIV/Aids has led to several photography books and many exhibitions worldwide. http://noorimages.com/photographer/bonet/ Being extremely fascinated by the fact that HDDSLR photo cameras nowadays also have the capability of shooting HD films, Pep crafted himself into shooting documentaries with DSLR cameras. This resulted in several short documentary films, amongst which the award winning ‘Into the Shadows’, a pursuit into the lives of hundreds of thousands of Africans living in the inner city of Johannesburg. Into the shadows Online Short , 2013 , (1st prize World Press Photo) People from neighboring countries move to South Africa in search of a better life. Devastating effects can occur on the fragile ecosystem endangering several species. Marshes and peat bogs can also dry up, causing irreversible destruction. Researchers believe that the impact of these new mining operations will affect not only surrounding areas but also regions hundreds of kilometers away. The office becomes their home and their apartments turn into bedrooms. Cool open space areas in big corporations are always the same, regardless of their geographic location or economic context. When empty, they seem like the essence of mediocrity and homogenization. Luckily, when filled with people, they show their more human dimension. • 59. Poland. In search of diamonds This is a country where anything's allowed. Here every, even the wildest relationship, becomes flesh. Our version of beauty has nothing in common with the utterly clichéd classic of Tuscany or Andalucia. Our beauty is an elixir for the initiated, those prepared for a surprise, for difficulty, a bold metaphor, a combination that seems to come from one's wildest dreams. Poland is a land of cowboys, galloping dinosaurs, camels, dwarves, plastic bison and the biggest Jesus in the world, a land where any, even the most fantastical architectural form is allowed, a land like a great big question mark. I chose Paraguay because name of this country seems to be familiar for everyone, but , on the other hand, it is mentioned very rarely in mass media. I asked my friends what they know about Paraguay and how they imagine this country. I connected their expectations with pictures taken by me in my neighborhood which symbolically correspond to what my friends think about the distant and unknown Paraguay. This is the series of pictures about lack of knowledge in the world of information. Paraguay It is a story about us and our knowledge in the Google's reality. One is my capture and captivity by troops loyalist to Gadafi. The other one is the verification, not long time after I was released, of the brutal treatment the rebels where giving to the prisoners loyalist to Gadafi´s regime. Therefore, in addition to trying to talk about the situation of this prisoners, this essay wants to talk about the anger, the fury, the abuse, the torture … but specially, about the self-annihilation by the mutilation of big guest of our desires as human beings: freedom. So, offering my personal experience I can bring the situation of the prisoners closer, make it more comprehensible… just as the images of the prisoners can shed some light on my experience. • 111. Soth: “I believe that photography is essentially non- narrative. That, while it aches to tell stories, it doesn’t really tell stories that have a beginning, middle and end. This has constantly frustrated me about the medium, and I’ve been constantly battling it. What I’ve come up with, is that when I’m looking at a photographer’s work, I’m looking as much at that person’s experience as a photographer in the world, almost as if they are a first-person narrator, as I’m looking at the subjects of the photographs.” https://distrito47.wordpress.com/2013/06/02/alec- soth-sleeping-by-the-mississippi/ Soth: “I believe that photography is essentially non- narrative.
