Sam Heydt, (born April 20, 1986) is an American social practice and new media artist born and raised in New York City. Although currently residing in Vienna, Heydt has lived and worked in Paris, Venice, Amsterdam, Athens, Buenos Aires, Sydney, Udaipur. After completing her studies at Parsons School of Design (as well as Cooper Union, Universidad de Buenos Aires, La Sorbonne and the Universiteit van Amsterdam), she founded Jane Street Studio, L.L.C. in the Meatpacking District. Since established, the company has expanded to provide both design and marketing consultation in addition to photography and art direction. It's growing roster of clients span Europe, North & South America, Asia and Oceania. In addition to this entrepreneurial undertaking, she has attended artist residencies in Iceland, Australia and New Zealand; and has undertaken a range of altruistic, non-profit work - the most recent being in Rajasthan, India where she helped produce a documentary on child prostitution. As a fine art photographer, Heydt has exhibited in a constellation of galleries and museums throughout the world and is in the permanent collection of the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia. For Heydt, illusion won’t free us from reality, even as the sustained narrative of tabloids becomes history and the myth of progress continues to perpetuate invisible violence. The transformation of the global landscape under the weight of industrialization is central to her work, as is the residual of consumption, the mutability of history and the material inequalities of a world reduced to a bottom line. NITLE Shared Academics: The Synchronous International Classroom: New Directio...NITLE
This seminar presents an unusual relationship between Southwestern University, a liberal arts college located in the United States, and a partially American-managed archaeological research institute in Italy, the Restoring Ancient Stabiae Foundation. Dr. Thomas Noble Howe will outline ways of maintaining the high standards of American liberal arts colleges—with their intimate interactions between students and faculty—while combining education abroad and synchronous distance learning in a way that more affordably facilitates the insertion of international experiences into increasingly “sequenced” majors. With receptive faculty, good equipment, and reliable backup, a system may be established that obviates the need to replace faculty who are abroad and allows students studying abroad to follow essential courses for their majors. In this seminar, Dr. Howe shares his vision for providing students with international experience through collaboration with unusual international foundations like the Stabiae Foundation. Through discussion with colleagues at NITLE Network institutions, participants will examine possibilities for internationalizing the classroom through partnerships and emerging technologies.

Truth is Beauty, beauty is truth- that is all you know. Yet, illusion won’t
spare you from reality, even as the sustained narrative of tabloids become
history and the myth of progress perpetuates inequality. Globalization
has moved forward unevenly and no one can say where this “New Fron-
tier” is taking us. Our time is marked by deindustrialization and the
exploitation of cheap labor, climate change and clean coal, nationalism
and a refugee crisis. The skeletons of old factories serve as caveats of
a world increasingly reduced to a bottom line. Yet, these portents are
drowned out by the white noise of the media, which lure us in with
the empty promises it proposes for the future it truncates. The transfor-
mation of the global landscape under the weight of industrialization is
central to her work, as is the residual of consumption, the mutability of
history and the material inequalities of a world reduced to a bottom line.

Bulbul: Song of the Nightingale documents the life of a young Banchara girl living
off National Highway 79 in Madhya Pradesh, India. Though only twelve years old,
Bulbul already stands at a crossroads. The likelihood is high that her parents will
soon force her into the longstanding community tradition of prostitution. Bulbul’s
tribe, the Banchara, have existed at the bottom of Indian society for centuries, relying
on prostitution as their economic lifeblood. A continued lack of options allows this
practice to persist. The film traces the contours of Bulbul’s horizon through her
relationships and encounters with the constellation of women in her immediate
family and community, offering a glimpse of what might become her future.
