1. SITUATION
HISTORY
To understand the current illegal mexican immigration problem, a bit of history needs to be
explained . At the beginning of the 20th century , the "braceros" (Mexican paysans) could work
in the USA for a limited time. But since the Immigration Act in 1965, these workers can't work
anymore in the USA. Since then the number of illegal mexican immigrants began to grow, and
then the US Governement needed to find solutions to this problem.
Between the 80' and 90' , the number of illegal immigrant amazingly increased . 1992 -> 1
million immigrant.
BARRIER
in October 26th, 2006 The American president George W. Bush decided to sign a law called " the
Secure Fence Act" . This law was a solution to the illegal immigration problem : this solution was
to build a wall along the America to Mexico border. This law was voted to fight against the illegal
immigration and drug peddling.
This barrier doesn't exist all along the frontier, only main parts of the frontier are covered.
Indeed , the fact of covering 3200km of frontier with a barrier isn't easy at all. That's why many
people use to guard this frontier. It is the case of the official Border Patrol. This Patrol counted
12000 people in 2008.
Their main role is to control the illegal immigration but also the huge problem of drug trade.
They're said to arrest third of the illegal mexican immigrants caught each year.
2. Other groups : They're other group of people, independant groups who fight against this illegal
immigration. Most of them have rascist ideas such as the Minute Men , these groups use
violence to stop this immigration ...
CONCLUSION
With the construction of the barrier, the US government wanted to show it's opposition to the
massive illegal immigration. But those against this decision showed the controversy generated
by this politic decision : USA takes profit of the economical exchanges with Mexico but it is
opposed to the immigration...
