Problem
The Doctors Hospitals were
having trouble managing and
staffing their Emergency
Department, although their
reputation for quality care
was good. They needed a
business partner to help them
administer the Department,
operate their Emergency
Medicine Residency Program more efficiently and hire additional emergency
physicians.
Solution
Within three months, EMP hired four additional residency trained, board certified
emergency physicians and implemented staffing changes. EMP also corrected the
emergency group's administrative and billing problems. Doctors Hospital, which
handles 64,000 visits, is now staffed with double and triple coverage for 12 hour
days by emergency physicians rather than residents. The staffing is such that the
residents have an appropriate patient load with continuous, direct supervision in
every case. Every patient is independently evaluated by an attending. Improved
attending staffing confirms our commitment to the training program and does not
utilize residents as a means to staff the department. With the additional staff hired
by EMP, the attending physicians were able to cut their clinical hours by 20%
allowing more time for participation in resident education. Overall, this has
resulted in increased patient satisfaction, improved resident education and greater
physician satisfaction.
