 The Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) is a Non Profit Collaboration trade
organization.
 Established by Sony in June 2003.
 Defines the Guidelines for Sharing of Digital Media between Multimedia
Devices.
 Guidelines are built upon existing public standards.
 Guidelines specify a restricted ways of using standards to achieve
interoperability.
 They are private & available for some amount of fee.

 DLNA uses Universal Plug and Play(UPnP) for :
1. Media management.
2. Discovery and control.
 UPnP defines the type of Devices that DLNA supports.
 It also Defines the mechanism for accessing MEDIA over network.
 Thus called BackBone.
 UPnP is set of networking protocols.
 UPnP is used to seamlessly discover networked devices on network.

7. Network Connectivity Layer:
DLNA mechanism needs a network for sharing of multimedia data.
The Network could be any wired or wireless Network.
Network Stack :
As the network is need , there has to be a protocol in through which data
transferring/streaming should follow.
It could be any protocol which is supported BY THE NETWORK through
which Data is Streamed on the network.
Media Transport:
Basic mode of Media Transfer is HTTP.

8. Device Discovery and Control Management
 UPnP plays the Lead Role in this Work.
 UPnP is Finds the Device .
 UPnP also Controls and Manages the Media .
Media Formats:
 A Large number of Media Formats are supported by this
architecture.
 It supports all most all type of MULTIMEDIA formats

 The Device model Used by DLNA is Derived From the UPnP Forum
Fundamental Model.
 UPnP Model Consist OF:
 DEVICE: It is entity that provide a simple service. Eg a Mobile Phone.
 SERVICES: They are the basic unit of control.
They Provide Action and Maintain Status,
example: A Mobile that supports a Data Transfer Service,
Media Playback service.
 Control Points: They are the entities that are capable of Discovering
and also controlling the other devices.

10. DLNA DEVICE MODELS
 With development of the DLNA the Basic device model was extended so
that the devices could them selves interact with each other to pass on
digital data.
 Previously, Control Point may be managing multiple devices, all interaction
occur between and individual devices.
 Now the control point configures the devices , as needed and initiates the
flow of content, and gets out of the way.

The Home Network Device Category
This Category has 5 Device Classes, that are in use at Home Network
 Digital Media Server(DMS): It makes available digital media content.
 Digital Media Player(DMP):It finds the content made available by DMS also
provides a playback for the supported media.
 Digital Media Renderer(DMR):Render or play the content made available by DMS.
 Digital Media Controller(DMC):It sets up the Connection Between a DMS and DMR.
 Digital Media Printer(DMPr):Provides Printing Services to DLNA Home Network.

The Mobile Handheld Device Category
This Category share same usage models of HND Device Category but have different
requirement for media format .
 Mobile Digital Media Server(M-DMS):Offers and Distribute contents through mobile
devices):Finds the content offered by a M-DMS and plays the
content locally on the M-DMP.
 Mobile Digital Media Downloader(M-DMD):Finds and Downloads the Contents exposed by an
M-DMS and plays the content locally on the DMD.
 Mobile Digital Media Controller(M-DMC):Finds the content offered by an M-DMS and match
it to the rendering capabilities of a DMR, setting up a
connection between server and renderer
 Mobile Digital Media Up loader(M-DMU):Sends content to an M-DMS with upload Functionality.

14. DLNA DEVICE MODELS
The Home Infrastructure Device(HID)
This category is made up of the two Device Classes.They allow HND’s and MHD’s to
interoperate.
 Mobile Network Connectivity Function(M-NCF): These Devices provide a bridging
function between the MHD network connectivity and the HND
network connectivity.
 Media Interoperability Unit(MIU):Devices provide content transformation between
required media formats for the HND Device
Category and the MHD Device Category.
