Summary Of The Short Story Of The Wavemaker Hass
Connor Wilkinson Allegra Villarreal, Instructor ENGL 1302 17 November 2017 George Saunders,
throughout his collection of short stories, CivilWarLand in Bad Decline, explores the lives of
fictional characters through episodes of economic hardship, love lost, death, and disillusionment
with the powers in place. He presents his ideas in a demented and dark way hoping to capture the
reader s attention to our own world around us. In Offloading for Mrs. Schwartz , the narrator and
main character runs a virtual reality store that makes it possible to erase memories through
offloading and the resulting memory modules can serve as entertainment for others. Throughout the
story, the narrator is filled with grief and guilt over the death of his... Show more content on

Both stories are set in a sort of futuristic setting, one with in a theme park and one in a virtual
reality store yet both deal with the everyday life of both narrators. There is a constant sense of
loathing and self despair by the narrators in both stories. In Offloading , the narrator works a
dreary dead end job at a virtual reality store while he deals with the death of this wife. In
Wavemaker , the narrator works at a menial job in a theme park, having to deal with his wife
having an affair with his boss and the death at his hands of a young park visitor. You can see the
depth of failure and misery in both narrators which is evident by the lack of any apparent societal
status and the menial jobs they hang on to for their meager existence. Both narrators are stuck in
their despair over the death of someone in their life and we see them both struggling to fight and
move forward with their lives. George Saunders typically writes in a dark tone with a hint of
humor and satire with a futuristic setting which in disguise is really a critique on modern day
times, a sort of what if scenario about the future. He s a savage satirist with a sentimental streak
who delineates, in these pages, the dark underbelly of the American dream: the losses, delusions
and terrors suffered by the lonely, the disenfranchised, the downtrodden and the

Attorney General Lynch Letter To Sen America
In their letter to Attorney General Lynch, famous writers and artists Apple supporters compel him
to end the Federal Bureau of Investigation s efforts to force Apple to create a software that could
enable the U.S. government to unlock any iPhone in End Efforts to Compel Apple to Crack iPhone .
The signees begin their letter with an immediate call to action to the attorney general followed by a
concession of their shared horror and outrage with the recent terror attacks in San Bernardino
acknowledging the need to ensure strong protections for national security (PEN America).
Contrasting the concession, the authors insert their first claim, what the FBI is asking Apple to do
would erode vital U.S. values... and could endanger writers and human rights advocates in [other]
countries... (PEN America). This suggests they have temerity in order to protect not only human
rights but also future rights stay intact. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Specifically, they cite PEN America s own surveys of writers around the world which show that
mass government surveillance... prompts writers to engage in self censorship, avoiding writing or
speaking about certain topics in order to remind Lynch that artists will stop debating controversial
topics, making those topics like abortion taboo and keeping civilians less informed (PEN America).
The signees concede with the government, FBI, and U.S. citizens regarding terrorism. They agree
all of them want to take aggressive steps to reduce the threat of terrorism suggesting that the
authors can see both sides of the argument so Lynch will listen to their request for an end to the
FBI s efforts to force Apple to create the software.
The writers moralize that the government s duty is to preserve and protect [the] constitution and
assume the government has forgotten their main duty: to protect the Constitution they feel, they
must remind Lynch of his obligations to the United States (PEN

Summary Of Casey At The Bat
In the poem Casey At the Bat and the biblical story of David and Goliath , a comparison shows
many sides of the story. The first similarity is that they both were confident in their ability to
succeed. When David said, Sir, I have killed lions and bears that way, and I can kill this worthless
Philistine. He shouldn t have made fun of the army of the living God! and when Casey said, That
ain t my style, . Casey was so confident in his ability to succeed that he lost a necessary thing, and
Davidshowed his confidence from his past success. Another similarity between the two of them is
that they both were under enormous amount of pressure. When Goliathsaid, If he can kill me, our
people will be your slaves. But if I kill him, your people... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People believed Casey could do it, and people thought that David could not. The quote, Then
from 5,000 throats and more there rose a lusty yell; It rumbled through the valley, it rattled in the

advancing to the bat. from Casey at the bat and the quote, You don t have a chance against him,
Saul replied. You re only a boy, and he s been a soldier all his life tells this. In Casey at the bat,
the people were so confident in him that they were bubbling, cheering and hooting with joy.
Even the writer of the poem called him mighty. In the story of David and Goliath, the king of his
nation thought he could never do it. The opinion of a king is always backed by the people. The
last main difference is that David was much more humble. The quote That ain t my style, said
Casey. Strike one, the umpire said. tells this. He is so confident that he can do it that he wastes
two of his three chances to succeed because he is better than the pitch . The story of David and
Goliath said, He put a rock in his sling and swung the sling around by its straps.

The Roaring Twenties Essay
The 1920s were an exciting and fascinating time in American history. An old Victorian nation had
transformed into a vibrant, modernized America. Often called The Roaring Twenties , this time
featured the famous slicked back hair, vibrant Flappers, and of course, marathon dances. From
inflated economics to unprecedented invention, forces collided to produce the most explosive
decade of the century.
The Roaring Twentiesencapsulates a captivating story that began with the return of young soldiers
from the front of World War I. Those who had once courageously sacrificed their lives for America
came home. They came home to adopt a new, regenerated lifestyle. President Warren Harding had
inspired a resurgence of optimism and hope. So what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By 1927, Henry Ford had sold approximately 15 million Model Ts. What had once been a rare
luxury had become part of everyday life. Furthermore, in the latter half of the 1920s, a Scottish
engineer named John Baird developed an innovative device at the Royal Institution in London.
Within two years, Baird became the first person to transmit images to and from London and New
York. He designed electrical recordings, the stereoscopic television, and even color television.
Nevertheless, not everyone benefited from the revolution of technology. America was on its way
to becoming a service economy. The use of machinery productivity increased while decreasing the
demand for manual labors. Furthermore the demand for food remained relatively the same. But as
a result, food prices and profits dropped. The small farmer lacked the capital to buy the necessary
equipment. Therefore he lost his viability and was sometimes tempted to merge with other farmers
in order to compete.
As the 1920s climaxed, there was an emergence of the confident face of femininity. Women gained
insight on their true womanhood and took on more unconventional lifestyles. For example, they
changed their fashion standards. What was once strict Victorian uniform transformed into a sleek,
trendy look. Hairstyles and clothing incrementally became shorter and more revealing. This led to
the birth of a new woman in 1926. She dressed provocatively, smoked cigarettes, and

“the First World War Did Not Arise Primarily as a Result...
The First World War did not arise primarily as a result of planned German aggression How far do
you agree with this opinion?
Explain your answer, using sources 1, 2 and 3 and your own knowledge of the issues related to this
controversy.
There has been some controversy as to what or who was to blame for the outbreak of the First
World War. Some people have taken the opinion that the war arose as a result of planned German
aggression such as sources two and three, whereas source one is of the opinion that the Germans
went to war with defensive intentions and that they didn t have any special plan to dominate
Europe .
It can be argued that the Schlieffen Plan was openly rigid and brittle which meant that the Germans
had no choice ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, I know from my own knowledge that the German s invented the Schlieffen Plan, a
German battle plan that was made many years prior to 1914 as a way to prevent a war on two
fronts, implying that they would be at war at some point. This shows aggressive intent and would
contradict the views of source 1 and the statement above, and yet agree with those of source two.
Furthermore source 3 presents the idea that there was inevitability and necessity for war, thus
showing us that Germany was indeed preparing for this and doing so through their aggressive
nature. As well as this, the war was also influenced by other ideas presented by this source, for
example: the recovery by France of Alsace Lorraine and the securing for Russia of
Constantinople and the Straits. This would contradict the points that were earlier made about
German s aggression shining through and would in fact suggest to us that they had no other
alternative but to try and take back what the believed to be theirs. In addition to this, there was
indeed another big factor in the beginning of war which is presented by source 3, and that was the
British concern that the coast of Belgium should not be occupied by a hostile power . Once again
we could interpret this is two ways, one being that it was the British that then made the first move
regarding the outbreak of war because of this reason which would therefore

Epistemological Journeys In The Truman Show
In June 1998, a movie was released that challenged audiences around the world to re examine the
world around them. The brainchild of scriptwriter Andrew Niccol and director Peter Weir, The
Truman Show, starring Jim Carrey, details the life and times of one Truman Burbank. Truman is
the star of The Truman Show, the most popular reality TV show of all time. The town that he lives
in is a set. His friends and family, actors. Everything that happens to him is scripted. Every single
moment of his humdrum existence is broadcast live to the world. The twist? Truman has no idea
that this is all happening. Truman believes that he is just another normal insurance broker living in
a quaint little island town, working hard to make a living. Born and... Show more content on

They challenge concepts that most people would assume as innate and intuitive, namely the validity
of the empirical world that surrounds them. Descartes begins his Meditations of First Philosophy
with his deconstruction, a process in which he uses ultimate skepticism to demolish all of his
preconceived notions about reality hoping to then construct a new, unbiased epistemological system
atop an underlying fundamental axiom. In his deconstruction, he realizes that all [he] has ...
accepted [with] ... the highest truth and certainty, [he] received from ... the senses. This worries
Descartes, as realizes that he might be a madman whose mind tricks him into having vivid, but
ultimately imaginary experiences. Descartes comes to the conclusion that senses [are] mislead[ing],
and thus, he rejects that the world around him is inherently true. Truman arrives at a similar
conclusion after undergoing his own deconstruction. Throughout Truman s life, activists and fame
seekers alike had infiltrated Truman s world and tried to notify him of the nature of his existence.
Even though Truman was quickly escorted away from these outsiders and reassured that they were
insane, Truman nevertheless began to develop a subconscious paranoia that something was wrong
with his world. After a few particularly sloppy slip ups from the showrunners, such as allowing
Truman to get a glimpse of his dead father, or accidentally transmitting a backstage frequency over
Truman s radio, Truman starts to act on his paranoia. He begins to act like a madman, thinking that
the world somehow revolves around [him] and that everyone [around him] is in on it. Just like
Descartes, Truman realizes that the world around him cannot be trusted, and with no more
preconceived notions about reality, Truman also begins to seek out the

Application of a Differentiation Strategy in an Organization
Technology Strategic Analysis
Porter defines cost leadership, differentiation and focus, as the basic business strategies for an
organization to gain competitive advantages. An effective competitive strategy should be based on
the organization s goals and objectives as well as the market situation (Allen Helms, 2006). Hotel
ICON is an independent teaching hotel focusing on creative and innovative design and services. As
the slogan Unlike Any Other illustrates, Hotel ICON strives to create a unique hotel experience for
customers instead of a stereotype one that they can gain in most chain hotels. This indicates that the
hotel is following a differentiation strategy to gain competitive advantages in the Hong Kong hotel
market by providing stylish design supplemented by the revolutionary technology trend (Hotel
ICON, 2011).
An organization applying differentiation strategy may focus on providing unique product or
services which emphasizing on quality service, innovation as well as the revolutionary technology
trend (Allen Helms, 2006). By applying differentiation strategy, organizations usually could achieve
higher customer loyalty by providing customers unique and high quality services. They are also
likely to gain higher revenue because customers may be willing to pay more for the value added
experiences. Since Hotel ICON mainly adopts differentiation strategy, high technology elements are
involved throughout almost all aspects of Hotel ICON s operations, such as the

Environmental Effects Of Environmental Pollution
It is estimated that approximately 2.4 million people in the United States are affected physically by
pollution every year. Pollution is harmful substances in the air that affect the environment and
poisonous gases are released in the atmosphere. There several types of pollution, which includes:
water, land, and air pollution. All three are very harmful to Earth, and has a dangerous effect in the
end, which is included, but not limited to global warming. Pollution that is in the air can eventually
lead to health problems among humans, and can even affect the environment for Mother Nature
itself, and also animals. Respiratory and lung diseases can result from air pollution over the course
of years. Water pollution effects aquatic animals, which are consumed by humans, and could lead
to even bigger problems overall. Pollution over land can lead to major problems with the soil and
groundwater used to grow these plants, which are also food that is consumed for the human,
animal, and insect population.
The air that we breathe is a mix of gases that encircles the Earth s crust. Those gases known as
nitrogen and oxygen are the two gases that makes up twenty one percent of the atmosphere, and are
known as permanent gases. When that gas go through some type of contraction, it is known to be
carbon dioxide and water vapor, and that s what assist the cycle and growth of plants,
photosynthesis overall, and burning of fossils fuels (Harris, ).
According to the Salem Encyclopedia, air pollution comes from natural and human made
resources. Natural made resources would be pollen from plants that are released and usually
causes allergy for humans, which could result in seriousness. Pollen is the most common causes
in allergy in the United States as of today. It is produced naturally by trees, flowers, grass, and
weeds. When the body notice pollen in the system, it reacts as if pollen is a harmful substance, and
when that happens, an allergic reaction occurs. Some other natural sources are gases and the after
substances that come from volcano, dust, and decomposing matter. Man made resources would
include automobiles, airplanes, and airborne viruses. Global warming is affected greatly by carbon
dioxide which is known as the

Easter Island Chapter 1 Summary
In 400 AD to 900 AD, the Polynesians decided to migrate to a little island south of the pacific
ocean to start their civilisation. Since they are surrounded by water, that meant that the Polynesians
had only a few limited resource until they can find a way to start their civilisationsomewhere else.
Within time, the Polynesians started using their resources in a rapid amount of time, which can
soon lead to deforestation, loss of food production, limited to slim amount of resources, etc.

Tragedy of the commons or even the Easter Island situation can happen to our environment. As
stated in chapter one, we need a clean ecosystem in order to try to maintain life. We must need
clean air, clean water, and healthy soil with plenty of nutrients so our food production can keep
increasing, but once you take advantage of the environment like dump waste in our rivers to the
point that it causes water pollution, or burning out all our fossil fuels or gasoline to the point that
we have smog, or air pollution, our ecosystem will eventually die out. Also stated in chapter one,
soil degradation, crop diseases, or even weather conditions can decrease our food production. If
our human population and animal reproduction keeps increasing rapidly, there would be a limited
amount of space. For example, Los Angeles, California is avery populated city that everything is
so crowded and we have ridiculous amount of traffic jams every single day. The amount of
automobiles there are in the atmosphere contribute to the air pollution which later on causes smog
to occur. Factories are also another reason why

Dichotomy Between Eastern And Western Religions
Myths are culturally accepted stories that humans have orally constructed and passed on from
generation to generation to serve our larger perception of life and humanity. Further, myths help
guide us in their teachings about creation, good and evil, mortality, and suffering. However, these
myths contrast between Eastern and Western regions. Eastern regions depart from Western regions
in terms of their religious influence. Religionin Eastern regions helps shape the importance of
humans relationship with a higher power through the embodiment of rituals and sacrifices much
like in Native American and Shinto religious beliefs. Although Eastern regions branch from these
diverse cultures, they centralize on the belief that the relationship between Godand humans is
universal and essential for humanlife.

Indian History Important events
History of India . An overview : The people of India have had a continuous civilization since 2500
B.C., when the inhabitants of the Indus River valley developed an urban culture based on
commerce and sustained by agricultural trade. This civilization declined around 1500 B.C.,
probably due to ecological changes.
During the second millennium B.C., pastoral, Aryan speaking tribes migrated from the northwest
into the subcontinent. As they settled in the middle Ganges River valley, they adapted to
antecedent cultures.
The political map of ancient and medieval India was made up of myriad kingdoms with fluctuating

In 1979, Desai s Government crumbled. Charan Singh formed an interim government, which was
followed by Mrs. Gandhi s return to power in January 1980. On October 31, 1984, Mrs. Gandhi
was assassinated, and her son, Rajiv, was chosen by the Congress (I) for Indira Party to take her

V.P. Singh and then Chandra Shekhar.
In the 1989 elections, although Rajiv Gandhi and Congress won more seats in the 1989 elections
than any other single party, he was unable to form a government with a clear majority. The Janata

That alliance also collapsed, resulting in national elections in June 1991.

Societies Effects quot;the Love Song of J. Alfred...
Society gives us a set of unspoken rules and regulations that must be abided by or else society
becomes ones own worst enemy; thus is Eliot s message in his poem, The Love Song of J.
Alfred Prufrock. This poem has been given a cynical voice in which Eliot tries to convey his
message of modern society and its expectations. He is in a position in which he knows what the
flaws in society are but does not have the courage or the ability to convey the message to the rest
of the people. He fears what they might say and how they will treat him, will ruin him if he
exploits society. Eliot gives evidence of the mockery society exhibits in line 41: They will say:
`How his hair is growing thin! (775) He knows that there are certain things... Show more content on

This establishes the theme and thus the tone of the poem. Towards the end of the poem the
reader gains a sense of irony and sarcasm that is expressed within the tone: Till human voices
wake us, and we drown (778). Human voices is supposed to represent a helping hand in which
any person in trouble can be helped by humanity. However, these human voices only cause the
person in need to drown in their words. This is ironic because, as indicated above, humanity is
the coexistence of a fellow human with the help (if necessary and available) of another fellow
human when he/she is in need of it. However, metaphorically speaking, the person in need in the
poem (Alfred) only receives negativity and hostility from society and his fellow men, thus
causing him/her to drown in the words of the human voices. This is the most important set back
of society conveyed by Eliot in his poem. It is the last line in the poem and is the key to the
poem. Also, Eliot uses other text such as that, which is in the lines, But though I have wept and
fasted, wept and prayed, Though I have seen my head (grown slightly bald) brought in upon a
platter, I am no prophet and here s no great matter (777); as an allusion to indicate his inability to
convey his message. He explains that even though he has prayed (perhaps for society) and wept
and fasted, he still can not send the true message that has encompassed himself and his soul.

Radha, as the only one of all the characters in the novels...
Radha, as the only one of all the characters in the novels is a true representing of the modern
Indian woman. In her study of the imaginary of Indian women in literature, Rajan states that The
image of the new Indian woman is of course derived primarily from the urban educated middle
class woman(Rajan 130) and describes her as attractive, educated, hardworking, and socially
aware (Rajan 131). In spite of her origin as a daughter of a middle class traditional family, while
studying and in the years following her education, Radha became well aware of her possibilities.
Living in a large city away from home, having a job and later even a lover, she likes to think of
herself as of an independent young woman who can freely decide about ... Show more content on

This dilemma is inevitably the theme of the novel and Saadiya s pursuit of freedom can be seen as
a variation on the theme. The closer to the ideal of a housewife Radha gets, the more she feels the
need to escape. The more boundaries she crosses, however, the more she tends to get back to her
role of a wife. The longing for adventure as well as the guilt she feels while pursuing it is the
main driving power that makes her sway between her duty to Shyam and her attraction to Chris.
The two men stand for a safe yet dull and tiring life full of stereotypes in which she is unable to
realise herself fully on one hand and an exciting yet strange life full of the unexpected that
makes her feel alive again. She feels trapped by the expectation that are applied to her, such as
having a baby or being a glossy, silly wife (Nair 61) and struggles to find a way out so that she
could breath freely. While Chris gives her, at least in her eyes, the space she needs in able to
breathe freely, Shyam expects her to behave in the way his situation requires, denying her own
individual choices. His expectations ( Does she ever consider that such silly acts have
repercussions? Besides, what will my friends and their wives say if they find out? We have a
place in society. A standing that Radha has always treated rather carelessly ) stand in a contrast to
Radha s feelings. (nair 70)12

Control Mechanisms
Control Mechanisms Control mechanisms are necessary in order for any business to run smoothly
and ensure that things are going as planned. These controls help the business determine the activity
and direction of its employees in a manner that helps the company meet its goals (Bateman Snell,
2007). There are three basic types of controls: bureaucratic, market, and clan. Bureaucratic control
basically consists of the formal rules and regulations that establish authority, set standards, and
regulate behaviors (Bateman Snell). Market control regulates activities by examining the
competition, analyzing profit and loss, and utilizing economic information (Bateman Snell). Clan

culture, values, commitment, traditions, and beliefs, to control behaviour. Clan control is most
often used in organizations where people believe they can be part of shaping the culture. The
negative to this control is: Power Abuse this control may encourage an employee to cut corners

Market Controls provide a natural incentive for employees to enhance their skills so that they may

Situational Leadership Theory, Transformational, And...
Introduction
There are a few leadership theories, but for this research I will only on four of these. The theories
that will be discussed are Situational leadership theory, Contingency theory, Transformational, and
Transactional theory. The theory Transformational is pondered by several to be the theory
improvement for transactional leadership theory, and it appears to have a cumulative number of
research studies that are supporting the benefits of this theory. So, I will also compare and discuss
the contrast of the four different theories, and like a few examples. In an ever changing

upon the nature of the task, situation, leader s personality, make up of the group being led, and

Transformational theory
To use Transformational leadership theory we need to understand what it is. Transformational
leadership theory is the process that transforms and changes people. In other words, this theory
gives the leadership the ability to get his followers improve, and feel empowered to change, and to
be led. The theory involves evaluating the associates motives, filling their needs, and appreciating
them. So, a leader using the transformational theory could make their company more triumphant
just by appreciating there associates.
Transformational leadership theory may be found at all levels of the organization: teams,
departments, divisions, and organization as a whole ( Transformational Leadership Theory , n.d.,
para. 2). These leaders are daring, visionary, risk takers, thoughtful thinkers, inspiring, and have a
charismatic appeal. But magnetism alone is inadequate for altering the way an organization
functions. Therefore, they cannot bring major changes, unless they have the four I s factors, which

Initially, this study aimed to explore the levels of self esteem of early adolescents at the end of
primary school and gender differences regarding self esteem. Secondly, it attempted to examine the
type of coping strategies that early adolescents employ and gender differences regarding the
different coping strategies. The first main finding of this research indicated that the levels of self
esteem of the early adolescents were low, with the female adolescents scoring low on all scales. In
addition, both male and female early adolescents had low levels of self perception regarding
scholastic competence, physical appearance, athletic and job competence, romantic appeal and
behavioural conduct. Females were also found to score significantly lower than males on the
domains of global self worth, physical appearance and close friendship. Concerning the second
aim of this research, early adolescents have been found to use productive coping strategies in order
to deal with their problems, with the strategies Work hard and achieve and Focus on solving the
problem coming first in their repertoire. With respect to the gender differences and coping styles

Research Paper On The Roaring Twenties
The Roaring Twenties The Roaring Twenties were an age of exciting and new developments
starting from The Birth of Mass Culture, The New Women, Prohibition, The Culture Civil War,
Jazz and Blue Music and The Renaissance. This age was a time of change in multiple ways, many
were more serious than others. The 1920swere an age of dramatic and political change for instance.
The 1920s brought more of a conflict than celebration to the nation, and its wealth. For the first time
in the nation s history, more Americans lived in cities than farms ( History.com Staff, The Roaring
Twenties) . Although the U.S.A. did not enter the First World War until April 1917, the conflict
cast a shadow over American society that would take a while to pass. There was a brief
economic recession at the start of the 1920s, but as the decade moves on, the economy boomed
and America began the age of consumerism. However, for many Americans, the 1920s was a
decade of poverty. More than 60 per cent of Americans lived just below the poverty line. (BCC,
The Roaring Twenties) . The U.S started the 20th century as a country with enormous potential,
and finished the century as the world s only superpower. Yet there are two ways of looking at this
powerful nation in the 1920s. Either as a wealthy country with a high standard of living, big cars
and large houses, or as a country with many people living in poverty and some enduring terrible
racism (BCC, The Roaring Twenties) . During the 1920s, many Americans

Baha is consider themselves world citizens, working for the establishment of a universal human

tribulations to set the standards for future supporters. The beliefs, worships, and traditions amplify
the organization and ground rules of the Baha i faith. This faith openly expresses its fondness of
equality to any gender, race, or ethnicity with minor differences. Baha i religion is perhaps one of
the most compassionate and nondiscriminatory religions known to society. In similar fashion, the
founders formed the history of the Baha i faith. A founder is a person who establishes an
institution or settlement ( FOUNDER). The first founder was a young merchant named Siyyid Ali
Muhammad. Moreover, it was said that he brought the world a new message from God called the
Bab, which means The Gate (@BahaiTeachings. pg. 1). The Babi faith spread quickly from the
revolutionary teachings of spiritual and moral transformation. The government was appalled by the
sudden acknowledgement of the faith and acted immediately. An abundance of Babis was lacerated

Alienation By Henrik Ibsen And Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe...
Alienation, through my personal views, is inevitable in the modern day. Our society has become
so adapt to depending on the individual to conform to the demanding expectations of our society.
What constitutes a life of alienation in my opinion is the inability to find meaning in the world
and to become a cog in the machine of our society, conforming to what is expected from us based
off of societal norms. This idea can best be highlighted through Henrik Ibsens Hedda Gablerand
Johann Wolfgang von Goethes Faust, which is illustrated through the main character s alienation
based on their inability to find meaning in their lives.
Alienation in Ibsen s Hedda Gabler is based particularly on personal alienation highlighted
through the main character Hedda. Hedda is the perfect representation of an alienated individual
asserted against a conventional society. Ibsen focuses particularly on the ownership of Hedda
Gabler, from the ownership of her father into the hands of George Tesman, to see Hedda to never
be in complete ownership of herself until she takes the matters into her own hands and claims her
own life by committing suicide at the end of the play. She is lost in a world where she no longer
has anyone, beside herself and her pistols, which she continually shoots off as these pistols can be
seen to dramatize Hedda s disconnect from the world and the frustrations she feels towards it.
Arguably she has nothing to look forward too, besides the continual hounding from George

Conflict Management Blake and Mouton
Abstract
This study presents a review of conflict management approach. It presents the various views and
definitions on conflict types of conflict. It further looks at five conflict management styles of Blake
and Mouton. In addition, it provides some insight into conflict management from a Malaysian
perspective.
Introduction Whether conflict within an organization is viewed as desirable or not, the fact is that
conflict exists and is endemic. As human beings interact in organizations, differing values and
situations create tension. Conflict is thereby viewed as a situation in which two or more individuals
operating within a unit appear to be incompatible. When such conflict is recognized, acknowledged

Nature of conflict
Conflict arises due to a variety of factors. Individual differences in goals, expectations, values,
proposed courses of action, and suggestions about how to best handle a situation are unavoidable.
When we add to this an amount of unease because of uncertainty as to a business s future, conflict
often increases. Perhaps this is why we see such a high amount of conflict today. Changes in
technology, global shifting of power, political unrest, and financial uncertainties are facts of life.
These factors В– and others В– make conflict unavoidable. To some managers, this inevitable
disharmony is lamentable and should be avoided at all costs. To others, conflict presents exciting
possibilities about the future В– if managed in a positive, constructive fashion.
Traditionally, conflict within an organization has been seen as a sign of a problem. Conflict meant
there were differences of opinion, alternatives which needed to be considered, and opposing points
of view to be studied. Adaptation, accommodation and flexibility are the keys to survival in such a
situation.
Organizations are often found to be in similar precarious situations, and the same survival skills
apply in the organizational environment. Changes in personnel, clientele, product line, financial
climate, and even corporate philosophy and vision will happen. A manager needs to develop
flexible new coping skills to continue functioning in

It takes coping courage to learn how to deal with painful problems. Reptilian and emotional coping
brains can act without the help of our thinking brain and we need them to help us stay safe and

One of the most common mistakes we make when stressed by upsetting experiences is to try to
shut off our awareness of emotional brain s ability to sense what we are feeling. We can lose the
ability to care in a positive way. We may become insensitive to hurting other people with our
words or actions. Our strongest automatic coping response is from reptilian brain, which senses
when we are physically threatened by danger. The smart way to use our brain is by using the

The Theory Of Psychology And Personality Development
Personality Report
There are many theorists that have made psychology incredible, and have paved the way for what
we believe psychology to consist of today. Some important theorists that I believe have made a
huge contribution are Sigmund Freud, Karen Horney, and Dollard and Miller. These theorists have
all had their own view on personality development, and I believe that these ideas have shaped the
way in which we view psychology today. The many interpretations of conflict, psychotherapy, and
cultural and biological aspects of personality have shaped their views and differences as well.
Sigmund Freud, known as the father of psychology, developed some of the first theories of
modern psychology. One of his well known theories is the structural model of the psyche.
According to Freud, most of what drives individuals is buried in the unconscious mind. There
are three main forces that drive humans, which include the id, the ego, and the super ego. The
id is the summation of basic personal needs and desires. It is completely self centered, and has
no care for sensibility or reality. It strives for what it wants, when it wants it with no other

It is the ego s job to, in a sense, counteract the selfishness and impractically if the id. The third

In times of recession people tend to be very conservative when spending and the people see that
ALDI offers value add to their spending by saving them money in their groceries. Globalization
forces companies to standardize processes and ALDI has been very good at it, making sure their
stores have the same concept everywhere they are located world wide. Economic and
Technological forces influencing the global context of ALDI Despite the economical recession
that the US currently faces, all around the country, ALDI continues to grow. ALDI is recently
celebrating the opening of their 1,000th U.S. store in West Haven, Connecticut. At a time when
other retailers are cutting back and the recession is deepening, ALDI continues to build new
stores in 29 states nationwide and also around the globe. ALDI claims that when you shop at
ALDI, you can always count on finding products that are consistently equal to or better than the
top national brands in quality and taste, for up to 50% less than at traditional grocery stores.
ALDI claims that by shopping at their stores, one can save an average of $115 a month on
family s groceries on staples like fresh produce, milk, bread and eggs. ALDI has been able to tap

The Effect Of Cortisol On The Levels Of Cortisol
Cortisol is a cholesterol derivative steroid hormone. It is produced in the cortex of the adrenal
gland. Cortisol is secreted because of stress related events and its part of our adaptive stress
response.
The total plasma cortisol taken in the morning, in a healthy individual is 200 700nmol. Secretion of
cortisol follows the diurnal rhythm so naturally levels of cortisol are at their highest 20 30 minutes
after awakening; with an average of 50% increase. This is referred to as the cortisol awakening
response (CAR)
Cortisol levels start to decline in a steady manner throughout the day; reaching its lowest point late
in the evening. High levels of cortisol in the morning are linked to sleep cycle, therefore jet lag,
night shifts are some of the factors that can disrupt ACTH secretion and consequently cortisol too.
The patient presented with weight gain, flushed skin, tiredness, inability to concentrate, hirsutism,
depression and facial swelling; which all indicate that the patient might be suffering from Cushings
Syndrome.
Cushings sydrome is characterised by a group of symptoms that occur as a result of elevated levels
of cortisol.
The source can be endogenous, the first would be Cushings disease which is a cortcotropinoma
(tumour in the anterior pituitary gland) which can be a microadenoma or a macroadenoma. The
second is the adrenal adenoma and adrenal carcinoma, which are tumours in the adrenal cortex
On the other hand the source of hypercortisolism, can be

My Personal Note On Facebook
Slumped in my bed with my laptop is how I spend most days. A duvet, food and youtube are all
the things that make me happy nowadays. That sounds really sad I know, but I don t really see
anyone, not even family to be honest. I m home schooled and my mum is out of the house from
4:30am until 8:00pm trying to earn enough money to support the two of us. Yeah, it s a lonely
little life and yeah, it does feel very isolated.
That s why I find comfort in youtube. The videos are the most comfort I get at the moment, I mean
people are practically talking to you, and that s more than I get in real life. I don t know how to talk
to new people or make friends because I never had to, I m very shy, the only person I talk to is my
mum as we don ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are some youtubers that never fail to make me laugh, even if I m at a low, that can just make
me smile. It s kinda weird to like them for a 14 year old girl, I mean most people my age are
probably in love with Joe Sugg or Caspar Lee, Dan Howell or Phil Lester. But not me. Well, I do
love them, but the people I just can t get enough of are the Yogscast.
I don t know why, they re just hillarious and I absolutely love them. Yes sure call me a geek, a nerd
whatever but I play a lot of the games they do and never miss a new episode of anything. I ve
watched all their series at least twice.
That does sound rather sad but you have to remember I m alone with nothing to do most of the time.
I do all my maths, English, science and media studies (home) school work on my laptop, I also do
art. I sometimes do extra if I feel like I m going to be tired the next day so I can just watch
youtube videos. Yeah, I m taking my GCSEs this year as well as next year and that means that
because I m home schooled, I have to go into a school to take the exams. Not only are exams
terrifying, but going into a giant room full of strangers to do an exam is even scarier.
So, here I am, sat on my bed on a warm Monday afternoon, doing some Biology coursework. I
listened to Ed Sheerans album Multiply . I absolutely adored Ed and particularly enjoyed listening
to Runaway , I have no idea why, it just made the whole idea of running away sound rather

Crvical Cancer Essay
With more than 500,000 new cases being detected each year, cervical cancer is one of the
leading causes of cancer affecting women worldwide.1, 2 A very high burden of cervical cancer
mortality is found in developing countries, where nearly 9 out of 10 cases result in cervical cancer
related mortality among women.3, 4 These healthcare disparities can be largely explained by the
lack of access to effective cervical cancerscreening programs in low resource settings, such as Sub
Saharan Africa (SSA), that allow for early detection and treatment.5 African women have an
extremely high incidence of cervical cancer, with approximately 420,000 new cases, half of which
die per year.6 Kenya has the second highest incidence of invasive cervical cancer (ICC) in
Africa.6,7 The... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, after controlling for risk behavior, HPV incidence is higher among women with
HIV.17 19 Squamous intraepithelial lesions (SIL) or cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN),
the HPV mediated cytological and histological precursors of cervical cancer, are more prevalent
in HIV infected women.20, 21 HIV leads to an increased prevalence of HPV and incidence of
CIN in HIV infected women. This maybe due to immune suppression seen with HIV.22
Moreover, cervical lesions are twice as likely to progress to high grade cervical intra epithelial
neoplasia (HGCIN) in HIV infected women as compared to HIV negative women.23 This could
be due to the inability of the immune system to clear HPV in advanced precancerous and
cancerous lesions.21, 24, 25 However, studies have found that the rates of invasive cervical cancer
(ICC) do not increase with decreasing CD4+ counts.26 Researchers attribute this finding to the
long latency period prior to the development of invasive cervical disease, during which, HIV
infected women end up dying of other complications of their HIV before ICC affects

American Imperialism In The Philippines
Part of what is wrong with the view of American imperialism is that it is antithetical to our interests.
We are better off when people are governing themselves (Paul Wolfowitz). This powerful quote by
American political scientist, Paul Wolfowitz, portrays a notion that numerous people felt about the
United Statesambition to take over other countries. In 1898, the United States went to war with
Spain fighting to free Spanish colonies of the harsh treatment the received from their Spanish
masters. This war was known as the Spanish American War. When the United States won the war
against Spain, the U.S. gained control over Spain s old colonies such as Cuba and the Philippines
(Background Essay). In October 1898, Spain and the U.S. covend to write a peace treaty, in which
the United States made the decision to annex, or take over, the Philippine Islands. While the treaty
was passed with a two thirds majority in the Senate, the Filipinos and ample Americans disagreed
with the decision to annex the Philippines (Background Essay). The U.S. should not have annexed
the Philippines because the action was not consensual, it was not a necessity, and it was hypocritical.
One of the many reasons as to why the U.S. should not have seized the Philippines is for the reason
that this arrangement was not consensual, meaning that it was not based on mutual consent. While
annexation seemed admirable to the U.S., they Filipino people did not agree to the annexation of
their own country. Many

The Roles Of Emma s Emma And Her Father
Emma and her father
Mr. Woodhouse is a sickly person whose main concern is his ill health a nervous man, easily
depressed (5). While we are told that Emma dearly loved her father, he also was no companion for
her. He could not meet her in conversation, rational or playful (24). Mr. Woodhouse demonstrates
excessive hypochondria and a constant demand for attention that are provided unflaggingly by
Emma; In a striking reversal, she functions as his parent, caring for his needs and guiding him with
her superior understanding and emotional strength. Though much older than his daughter, Mr.
Woodhouse cannot provide her with the figure of authority, wisdom, and strength. Instead, he looks
to her for leadership and comfort. Consequently, Emma infantilizes the old man, she forever shields
her father against critique and thereby sustains his dependence. In return, Mr. Woodhouse heralds
Emma as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mr. Knightley says to Mrs. Weston: ever since she was twelve, Emma has been mistress of the
house and of you all. In her mother she lost the only person able to cope with her. She inherits her
mother s talents, and must have been under subjection to her (48). Emma then is linked to her
mother as similar in temperament and talent and, presumably, in her capacity to control Mr.
Woodhouse. With the mother gone, a force of subjection, and with very little evidence to suggest
this absence as in any way traumatic to Emma. Emma s intellect and sagaciousness allow her
control of the estate, free of any rivals from within the family, and now embodies the location of
phallic signification. This authority extends beyond the household, however, because Hartfield
itself is already acknowledged by the community as the first in consequence (25). Emma s situation
allows for the Oedipal dynamic to be symbolically gratified while simultaneously giving her
preeminent status in the community.

Summary Of The Short Story Of The Wavemaker Hass Connor Wilkinson Allegra Villarreal, Instructor ENGL 1302 17 November 2017 George Saunders, throughout his collection of short stories, CivilWarLand in Bad Decline, explores the lives of fictional characters through episodes of economic hardship, love lost, death, and disillusionment with the powers in place. He presents his ideas in a demented and dark way hoping to capture the reader s attention to our own world around us. In Offloading for Mrs. Schwartz , the narrator and main character runs a virtual reality store that makes it possible to erase memories through offloading and the resulting memory modules can serve as entertainment for others. Throughout the story, the narrator is filled with grief and guilt over the death of his... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both stories are set in a sort of futuristic setting, one with in a theme park and one in a virtual reality store yet both deal with the everyday life of both narrators. There is a constant sense of loathing and self despair by the narrators in both stories. In Offloading , the narrator works a dreary dead end job at a virtual reality store while he deals with the death of this wife. In Wavemaker , the narrator works at a menial job in a theme park, having to deal with his wife having an affair with his boss and the death at his hands of a young park visitor. You can see the depth of failure and misery in both narrators which is evident by the lack of any apparent societal status and the menial jobs they hang on to for their meager existence. Both narrators are stuck in their despair over the death of someone in their life and we see them both struggling to fight and move forward with their lives. George Saunders typically writes in a dark tone with a hint of humor and satire with a futuristic setting which in disguise is really a critique on modern day times, a sort of what if scenario about the future. He s a savage satirist with a sentimental streak who delineates, in these pages, the dark underbelly of the American dream: the losses, delusions and terrors suffered by the lonely, the disenfranchised, the downtrodden and the ... The signees begin their letter with an immediate call to action to the attorney general followed by a concession of their shared horror and outrage with the recent terror attacks in San Bernardino acknowledging the need to ensure strong protections for national security (PEN America). They agree all of them want to take aggressive steps to reduce the threat of terrorism suggesting that the authors can see both sides of the argument so Lynch will listen to their request for an end to the FBI s efforts to force Apple to create the software. The first similarity is that they both were confident in their ability to succeed. When David said, Sir, I have killed lions and bears that way, and I can kill this worthless Philistine. He shouldn t have made fun of the army of the living God! and when Casey said, That ain t my style, . What had once been a rare luxury had become part of everyday life. Furthermore, in the latter half of the 1920s, a Scottish engineer named John Baird developed an innovative device at the Royal Institution in London. Within two years, Baird became the first person to transmit images to and from London and New York. He designed electrical recordings, the stereoscopic television, and even color television. Nevertheless, not everyone benefited from the revolution of technology. America was on its way to becoming a service economy. The use of machinery productivity increased while decreasing the demand for manual labors. Furthermore the demand for food remained relatively the same. But as a result, food prices and profits dropped. The small farmer lacked the capital to buy the necessary equipment. Therefore he lost his viability and was sometimes tempted to merge with other farmers in order to compete. As the 1920s climaxed, there was an emergence of the confident face of femininity. Women gained insight on their true womanhood and took on more unconventional lifestyles. For example, they changed their fashion standards. What was once strict Victorian uniform transformed into a sleek, trendy look. Hairstyles and clothing incrementally became shorter and more revealing. This led to the birth of a new woman in 1926. Explain your answer, using sources 1, 2 and 3 and your own knowledge of the issues related to this controversy. There has been some controversy as to what or who was to blame for the outbreak of the First World War. Some people have taken the opinion that the war arose as a result of planned German aggression such as sources two and three, whereas source one is of the opinion that the Germans went to war with defensive intentions and that they didn t have any special plan to dominate Europe . However, I know from my own knowledge that the German s invented the Schlieffen Plan, a German battle plan that was made many years prior to 1914 as a way to prevent a war on two fronts, implying that they would be at war at some point. This shows aggressive intent and would contradict the views of source 1 and the statement above, and yet agree with those of source two. Furthermore source 3 presents the idea that there was inevitability and necessity for war, thus showing us that Germany was indeed preparing for this and doing so through their aggressive nature. As well as this, the war was also influenced by other ideas presented by this source, for example: the recovery by France of Alsace Lorraine and the securing for Russia of Constantinople and the Straits. This would contradict the points that were earlier made about German s aggression shining through and would in fact suggest to us that they had no other alternative but to try and take back what the believed to be theirs. In addition to this, there was indeed another big factor in the beginning of war which is presented by source 3, and that was the British concern that the coast of Belgium should not be occupied by a hostile power . Once again we could interpret this is two ways, one being that it was the British that then made the first move regarding the outbreak of war because of this reason which would therefore ... Descartes begins his Meditations of First Philosophy with his deconstruction, a process in which he uses ultimate skepticism to demolish all of his preconceived notions about reality hoping to then construct a new, unbiased epistemological system atop an underlying fundamental axiom. In his deconstruction, he realizes that all [he] has ... accepted [with] ... the highest truth and certainty, [he] received from ... the senses. This worries Descartes, as realizes that he might be a madman whose mind tricks him into having vivid, but ultimately imaginary experiences. Descartes comes to the conclusion that senses [are] mislead[ing], and thus, he rejects that the world around him is inherently true. Truman arrives at a similar conclusion after undergoing his own deconstruction. Throughout Truman s life, activists and fame seekers alike had infiltrated Truman s world and tried to notify him of the nature of his existence. Even though Truman was quickly escorted away from these outsiders and reassured that they were insane, Truman nevertheless began to develop a subconscious paranoia that something was wrong with his world. After a few particularly sloppy slip ups from the showrunners, such as allowing Truman to get a glimpse of his dead father, or accidentally transmitting a backstage frequency over Truman s radio, Truman starts to act on his paranoia. He begins to act like a madman, thinking that the world somehow revolves around [him] and that everyone [around him] is in on it. This poem has been given a cynical voice in which Eliot tries to convey his message of modern society and its expectations. He is in a position in which he knows what the flaws in society are but does not have the courage or the ability to convey the message to the rest of the people. This establishes the theme and thus the tone of the poem. Towards the end of the poem the reader gains a sense of irony and sarcasm that is expressed within the tone: Till human voices wake us, and we drown (778). Human voices is supposed to represent a helping hand in which any person in trouble can be helped by humanity. However, these human voices only cause the person in need to drown in their words. This is ironic because, as indicated above, humanity is the coexistence of a fellow human with the help (if necessary and available) of another fellow human when he/she is in need of it. However, metaphorically speaking, the person in need in the poem (Alfred) only receives negativity and hostility from society and his fellow men, thus causing him/her to drown in the words of the human voices. This is the most important set back of society conveyed by Eliot in his poem. It is the last line in the poem and is the key to the poem. Also, Eliot uses other text such as that, which is in the lines, But though I have wept and fasted, wept and prayed, Though I have seen my head (grown slightly bald) brought in upon a platter, I am no prophet and here s no great matter (777); as an allusion to indicate his inability to convey his message. Research Paper On The Roaring Twenties The Roaring Twenties The Roaring Twenties were an age of exciting and new developments starting from The Birth of Mass Culture, The New Women, Prohibition, The Culture Civil War, Jazz and Blue Music and The Renaissance. This age was a time of change in multiple ways, many were more serious than others. The 1920swere an age of dramatic and political change for instance. The 1920s brought more of a conflict than celebration to the nation, and its wealth. For the first time in the nation s history, more Americans lived in cities than farms ( History.com Staff, The Roaring Twenties) . Although the U.S.A. did not enter the First World War until April 1917, the conflict cast a shadow over American society that would take a while to pass. There was a brief economic recession at the start of the 1920s, but as the decade moves on, the economy boomed and America began the age of consumerism. However, for many Americans, the 1920s was a decade of poverty. More than 60 per cent of Americans lived just below the poverty line. (BCC, The Roaring Twenties) . The U.S started the 20th century as a country with enormous potential, and finished the century as the world s only superpower. Yet there are two ways of looking at this powerful nation in the 1920s. Either as a wealthy country with a high standard of living, big cars and large houses, or as a country with many people living in poverty and some enduring terrible racism (BCC, The Roaring Twenties) . Our society has become so adapt to depending on the individual to conform to the demanding expectations of our society. What constitutes a life of alienation in my opinion is the inability to find meaning in the world and to become a cog in the machine of our society, conforming to what is expected from us based off of societal norms. This idea can best be highlighted through Henrik Ibsens Hedda Gablerand Johann Wolfgang von Goethes Faust, which is illustrated through the main character s alienation based on their inability to find meaning in their lives. Alienation in Ibsen s Hedda Gabler is based particularly on personal alienation highlighted through the main character Hedda. Hedda is the perfect representation of an alienated individual asserted against a conventional society. Ibsen focuses particularly on the ownership of Hedda Gabler, from the ownership of her father into the hands of George Tesman, to see Hedda to never be in complete ownership of herself until she takes the matters into her own hands and claims her own life by committing suicide at the end of the play. She is lost in a world where she no longer has anyone, beside herself and her pistols, which she continually shoots off as these pistols can be seen to dramatize Hedda s disconnect from the world and the frustrations she feels towards it. Arguably she has nothing to look forward too, besides the continual hounding from George ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Theory Of Psychology And Personality Development Personality Report There are many theorists that have made psychology incredible, and have paved the way for what we believe psychology to consist of today. Some important theorists that I believe have made a huge contribution are Sigmund Freud, Karen Horney, and Dollard and Miller. These theorists have all had their own view on personality development, and I believe that these ideas have shaped the way in which we view psychology today. The many interpretations of conflict, psychotherapy, and cultural and biological aspects of personality have shaped their views and differences as well. Sigmund Freud, known as the father of psychology, developed some of the first theories of modern psychology. One of his well known theories is the structural model of the psyche. According to Freud, most of what drives individuals is buried in the unconscious mind. There are three main forces that drive humans, which include the id, the ego, and the super ego. The id is the summation of basic personal needs and desires. It is completely self centered, and has no care for sensibility or reality. It strives for what it wants, when it wants it with no other considerations. The second part of the personality is the ego. The ego is the realization of reality.
