2. Learning Objectives
• To enable students to
understand the basic concept
of division through grouping
equally.
• To apply the knowledge in
solving problems related to
division.
4. A mother bird carries 12 worms to feed her 3 hungry
babies in the nest. If she gives all the baby birds the
same number of worms, how many worms does
each baby bird gets?
5. Solution:
Step 1: The mother bird distributes one worm to all the three baby birds. So the
remaining number of worms = 12 – 3 = 9
Step 2: The mother bird now has 9 worms which she distribute to the three baby
birds so that each gets one more worm. Now the remaining worms = 9 – 3 = 6
Step 3: The mother bird distribute the remaining 6 worms again so that each baby
bird gets one more worm. Now remaining worms = 6 – 3 = 3.
Step 4: The mother bird finally distribute the remaining 3 worms to the baby birds
so that the get one more worm. Remaining worms = 3 – 3 = 0
6. The mother bird distributed the entire 12 worms equally in
4 steps where in each step each baby bird got one worm
respectively.
So each baby bird got 4 worms.
We can say that 12 shared equally among 3 gives 4 to each
or
12 divided by 3 is 4
7. Division
Division is breaking a
number up into an equal
number of parts.
We divide to distribute
things easily. The sign of
division is “ ÷ “

21. • Each basket can hold 5 kittens. How many
baskets will be needed for 15 kittens?
22. Ans: 15 kittens put into equal groups of 5 gives 3
groups. So we need 3 baskets.
Which means 15 divided by 5 is 3.
