This dissertation explores Amitav Ghosh's novels 'The Hungry Tide' and ‘Gun Island’, and its
portrayal of environmental themes. It examines how myths and legends, like the legend of Bon
Bibi, contribute to understanding and appreciating nature alongside scientific knowledge. The
novel depicts the complex relationships between human settlements, wildlife conservation, and
the Sundarbans ecosystem, advocating for a holistic approach to environmental challenges.
Through some key characters the narrative presents diverse perspectives on conservation,
emphasizing the integration of science, culture, and personal experiences. Amitav Ghosh uses
allegories like "The Gun Merchant" to warn against the consequences of human greed and
exploitation of nature. The roles of environmental activists, like Piya and Nilima, in raising
awareness and supporting affected communities are also explored. Lastly, the dissertation
highlights the local and global impacts of climate change, emphasizing the need for collective
action, particularly in marginalized communities.

Chapter 5 :
Conclusion
05
Amitav Ghosh's novels, 'The Hungry Tide' and 'Gun Island,' offer
powerful insights into the urgent need to address climate change and its
impacts on vulnerable ecosystems like the Sundarbans. Through
compelling storytelling, Ghosh highlights the interconnectedness of
humans and nature, urging us to recognize our responsibility to protect the
environment. The consequences of climate change, from rising sea levels
to extreme weather events, threaten not only the Sundarbans but also
communities worldwide. These novels serve as a wake-up call,
emphasizing the importance of collective action to mitigate climate
change and preserve our planet for future generations. It's clear that urgent
action is needed to safeguard delicate ecosystems and livelihoods from the
devastating effects of climate change, making it imperative for us to come
together and prioritize environmental stewardship.

It examines how myths and legends, like the legend of Bon Bibi, contribute to understanding and appreciating nature alongside scientific knowledge. The novel depicts the complex relationships between human settlements, wildlife conservation, and the Sundarbans ecosystem, advocating for a holistic approach to environmental challenges. Through some key characters the narrative presents diverse perspectives on conservation, emphasizing the integration of science, culture, and personal experiences. Amitav Ghosh uses allegories like "The Gun Merchant" to warn against the consequences of human greed and exploitation of nature. The roles of environmental activists, like Piya and Nilima, in raising awareness and supporting affected communities are also explored. Through compelling storytelling, Ghosh highlights the interconnectedness of humans and nature, urging us to recognize our responsibility to protect the environment. The consequences of climate change, from rising sea levels to extreme weather events, threaten not only the Sundarbans but also communities worldwide. These novels serve as a wake-up call, emphasizing the importance of collective action to mitigate climate change and preserve our planet for future generations. It's clear that urgent action is needed to safeguard delicate ecosystems and livelihoods from the devastating effects of climate change, making it imperative for us to come together and prioritize environmental stewardship.
