● nail–patella syndrome, pachyonychia congenita,
Racket nails, dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa

4. Trauma

5. ● Subungual haematomas (malignant melanoma?)
● Splinter haemorrhages (infective endocarditis?)
● ingrowing toenails
● Onycholysis

9. Onychomycosis (tinea
unguium)
● Fungal infection of the nails
● Usually with: Trichophyton rubrum
infection of the hand
● Treatment: oral terbinafine or
itraconazole

10. Chronic paronychia
● Candida albicans
● wet workers
● Gram-negative bacteria
(blue–green colour)
● Management: keep hands dry,
imidazole or oral itraconazole

11. Acute paronychia
● Usually bacterial (staphylococci)
● Oral flucloxacillin or erythromycin

15. ● Cancer is rare
● benign tumours around the nail fold are not
uncommon
● Examples:
○ Viral warts
○ Periungual fibromas
○ Myxoid (mucous) cysts
○ Malignant melanoma
