Editor's Notes

  1. Eschatology- When studying eschatology, we have to understand when various prophesies are fulfilled. Some in the OT, others in the coming of Jesus Christ, and others awaits at Jesus Second coming. Historical Context- The better we can understand these things, the better chance we have at arriving at a correct interpretation. Literal Context- If we start by trying to dissect a word without first understanding the phrase, sentence, paragraph in which it is located, and if we also forget to connect it to the major themes of Scripture, we are destined to derive the wrong meaning and an incorrect interpretation.
  2. Some hold to past fulfillment of these passages, some to present fulfillment, and others to future fulfillment. Every question will not be answered. In fact, you may have more questions by the end than what you had in the beginning. 4. Php 2:3 “Huwag kayong gagawa ng anumang bagay dahil lamang sa hangad ninyong matanyag, bagkus magpakababa kayo at huwag ipalagay na kayo’y mabuti kaysa iba.”
  3. 2. The Scripture is absolute and perfect, it is breathed out by God, it is complete and sufficient, it is inerrant or without error, but we, as interpreters, fall short of every aspect of God’s perfection. God’s word is perfect and absolute, but no interpreter is infallible.
  4. There are four approaches to interpreting prophecy, and all related to time: past, present, future, and timeless. These are known as preterism (past), historicism (present), futurism (future), and idealism (timeless). The fifth approach is known as eclectic (mixed).
  5. Strong Points of Preterist is the passages wherein Jesus declared that “This generation will not pass away until these things take place”. Weak points: When Jesus says “no one knows when the tribulation period will occur”. The gospel was not proclaimed to the whole world before AD 70 (Mt 24:14). The cosmic signs concerning the darkening of the sun, the moon not giving its light, the stars falling from heaven have not occurred yet (Mt 24:29). Jesus has not returned on the clouds of heaven in power and great glory (Mt 24:30-31). We have not seen the worldwide judgment of the seals, trumpets, and bowls of Revelation 6-18.
  6. Historicism was especially popular during the Reformation (16th Century/ 1517-1648), when it was used to suggest that the Catholic Church was part of the end-times apostasy, with the pope as the Antichrist. Martin Luther believed that the pope and the papacy were the predicted Antichrist. The prophecies in Revelation about the dragon, beast, false prophets, and whore of Babylon refer to Satan working through the Roman Empire and the Roman Catholic Church including the papacy. Historicist interpretations have been criticized for inconsistencies, conclusions, and speculations and historicist readings of the Book of Revelation have been revised as new events occur and new figures emerge on the world scene. The problem for this view is that there are events in Revelation that are categorized and clustered in different timeframe and period.
  7. This view holds that Christians should endure trials and difficulties knowing they will be rewarded by God, who is in control of all things. There is a real battle of good and evil, but good will win in the end. Rev 1:19 (Jesus was speaking) Write therefore the things that you have seen, those that are and those that are to take place after this. It is clear in the Bible that Revelation is speaking of actual historical events with time frames that cannot be interpreted to mean general truths for believers of all ages. These are actual events that must occur in history.
  8. Interpretative challenge for Futurism is the words of Jesus in Mat 24:34 Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. The “abomination of desolation” in Mt 24:15 and Mark 13:14 is different in Luke 21:20 wherein the writer translated it as "But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near.” Further, the text in Matt 24:20 is an indication that the event was only local and not worldwide since it speaks of winter and Sabbath.
  9. The Word of God’s objective claim that there is a single path to truth challenges the claims of an eclectic approach much as it does the claims of postmodernism. Those who advocate this view are often idealists who recognize some of the weaknesses of their system and desire to experiment or compromise in aspects of the other systems
  10. Worship in Heaven (4:1-5:14); The Great Tribulation (6:1-18:24); The Return of the King (19:1-21); The Millennium (20:1-10); The Great White Throne Judgment (20:11-15); The Eternal State (21-22:21).
  11. An amillennialist sees the 1,000 years as spiritual and non-literal, as opposed to a physical understanding of history. To simplify, amillennialism sees the first coming of Christ as the inauguration of the kingdom, and His return as the consummation of the kingdom. John’s mention of 1,000 years thus points to all things that would happen in the church age. When Christianity became the official religion of Rome in the fourth century, many things began to change, including acceptance of historic premillennialism. Amillennialism soon became the prevailing doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church.
  12. They believe that “1,000 years” simply means “a long period of time.” Furthermore, the prefix “post-” in “postmillennialism” denotes the view that Christ will return after Christians (not Christ Himself) have established the kingdom on this earth. Those who hold to postmillennialism believe that this world will become better and better with the entire world eventually becoming “Christianized.” After this happens, Christ will return. However, this is not the view of the world in the end times that Scripture presents. From the book of Revelation, it is easy to see that the world will be a terrible place during that future time. Also, in 2 Timothy 3:1-7, Paul describes the last days as “terrible times.”
  13. According to this view, in order to understand and interpret the passages in Scripture that deal with end-times events, there are two things that must be clearly understood: a proper method of interpreting Scripture and the distinction between Israel (the Jews) and the church (the body of all believers in Jesus Christ). It must be seen that Israel (Abraham’s physical descendants) and the church (all New Testament believers) are two distinct groups. It is crucial to recognize that Israel and the church are distinct because, if this is misunderstood, Scripture will be misinterpreted.
  14. Historic premillennialism is posttribulational. This view of Premillennialism taught that the Antichrist would appear on earth and the seven-year tribulation would begin. Next would be the rapture, and then Jesus and His church would return to earth to rule for a thousand years. The faithful spend eternity in the New Jerusalem. Generally, all of the premillennialist beliefs teach that the tribulation is followed by 1,000 years of peace when all live under the authority of Christ. Afterwards, in a brief, final battle, Satan is permanently conquered. The placement of the rapture in relation to the other events is one of the main differences between historic premillennialism and premillennial dispensationalism.
  15. This view holds the Pre-tribulation view of rapture. Dispensational premillennialists hold that the nation of Israel will be saved and restored to a place of preeminence in the millennium. Thus, Israel will have a special function of service in the millennium that is different from that of the Church. The millennium for this view will be a period of history in which God reverts back to fulfilling His Old Testament promises made to ethnic Israel, after this modern “Church Age” in which we live today is concluded. As such, the millennium will be a state of Jewish dominion over all the world, along with a newly restored Jewish temple and priesthood.
  16. That is a very special place where that symbolic sacrifice was made because about 900 years later, around 988 B.C. David purchased Mount Moriah from Ornan and that was recorded in 1 Chronicles 21. David buys this piece of land located at the east side of the great city of Jerusalem. Its description is found in 1 Chronicles and 1 Kings. It is a monumental feat of construction, overlaid with gold and all kinds of precious things in tribute to God. The people are corrupt. The leaders are corrupt. The priests are corrupt. Jeremiah says the shepherds are corrupt. The prophets are corrupt. The nation is therefore corrupt and because of idolatry, sin and unbelief, the great massive first temple was destroyed by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia, who removed the Temple treasures in 604 BCE and totally destroyed the building in 587 BC.
  17. Cyrus II, founder of the Achaemenian dynasty of Persia and conqueror of Babylonia, in 538 BCE issued an order allowing exiled Jews to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the Temple. Work was completed in 515 BCE. There is no known detailed plan of the Second Temple, which was constructed as a modest version of the original building. Under the leadership of the Maccabees, priestly family of Jews who organized a successful rebellion against the Seleucid empire, drove Antiochus and his army out, and the Jews gained control of their land for about one hundred years until Pompey on 63 BCE, an acclaimed Roman general, captured the Holy Land and brought it under Roman rule. The event is celebrated in the annual festival of Hanukkah.
  18. Herod’s temple was one of the wonders of the ancient world—a beautiful building and a marvel of engineering. The Herodian Temple was again the centre of Israelite life. It was not only the focus of religious ritual but also the repository of the Holy Scriptures and other national literature and the meeting place of the Sanhedrin, the highest court of Jewish law during the Roman period. The stories of the temple is the story of Israel’s repeated cycle of apostasy. And God brings judgment and the judgment comes at the point at the heart of Israel at the temple. Once by the Babylonians, again it is for all intents and purposes, desecrated by Antiochus and again by Titus Vespasian, the great Roman general in 70 A.D. And as you well know, there has never been a temple in Jerusalem since.
  19. Will there be a temple in the future? Yes, there will be a temple in the time of the Tribulation. We read that in Daniel chapter 9 verse 27, that will be again desecrated by the Antichrist who will commit there what is called the abomination of desolation. So there will be another attempt at worship that will be judged. And finally, there will be a fifth temple and that temple will be a temple full of glory. That is the temple described in Ezekiel 43 as the temple of the Messiah in the Millennial Kingdom. You could pretty much track the history of Israel by the story of the temple. TRIVIA: The Philippines was the ONLY Asian country to support the UN Resolution 181 on the partition of Palestine and the Creation of the State of Israel in 1947. On 29 November 1947, 33 countries voted in favor of the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 181 creating the State of Israel. The thirty three countries are Australia, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Byelorussian SSR, Canada, Costa Rica, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, France, Guatemala, Haiti, Iceland, Liberia, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Norway, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Sweden, South Africa, Ukrainian SSR, United States of America, Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, Uruguay, and Venezuela.
