Defence in Business were pleased to have Simon Sauer, CEO Mates4Mates as the keynote speaker at the 26 Oct networking event at Deloitte. Veteran service organisation Mates4Mates has developed a successful blueprint for helping to tackle the alarming number of Defence personnel and veterans taking their own lives. CEO Simon Sauer said thousands of current and ex-serving personnel, and their families, had found a renewed sense of purpose, friendships and practical support through Mates4Mates programs. “For several years, we have been uncovering what works not only in supporting wounded, injured and ill Defence personnel when they transition out of service, but also supporting their family and loved ones”. Simon Sauer was joined by Deloitte and Defence in Business for a panel Q&A discussion on veteran career coaching, mentoring, education, training and employment support opportunities. The evening provided a high calibre presentation and discussion with prominent Defence leaders.

Damien has lived an extraordinary life for a 37 year old. At 19, as a garbage collector in Melbourne he joined the Australian Defence Force, graduating through one of the most arduous courses as a RAN clearance diver. With the ADF’s counterterrorism restructure following 9-11, Damien joined the elite TAG-East force, training as a sniper. Later as a private contractor he deployed to Iraq where he project managed the Iraq Special Police Training Academy overseeing training and deployment of local troops. After three years in Iraq, he left the front lines with no direction in life. A trip to Africa in 2009 awakened him to the horrors the natural world is facing from poaching. Recognizing the unique skills he possessed by virtue of his training and experience in military roles, Damien liquidated his savings, and founded the International Anti-Poaching Foundation (IAPF). Now a multinational not-for-profit, the IAPF runs operations on the front lines of the world wildlife wars, protecting iconic endangered species from slaughter by poachers. Using battle-proven tactics, training and technology in what is effectively a counterinsurgency operation the IAPF has recently demonstrated striking success in Mozambique. Operating in the most critical area on earth for rhino protection, losses have been reduced by over 80%. Damien will talk about his journey and IAPF’s model, operating in areas which represent high environmental value and where application of the organization’s unique capabilities can produce an effective and enduring local solution. The Defence in Business Queensland Ambassador, Blake Barrett, will MC and share future event plans, which will be followed by a business card draw, food and networking.

What does it take to be a successful entrepreneur or business owner? Should you work for a company, or start your own business? To help answer these questions and more, 80 people came to our Qld event on 20 Aug to meet and hear from two ex-defence entrepreneurs and business owners. Steve Baxter is one of Australia’s most successful tech entrepreneurs, investor, and ‘Shark’ on Shark Tank Australia. Steve spent 9 years in the Army as an apprentice and technician, before putting his life savings on the line to launch his first start-up, a pioneering internet service provider, from the spare room of his Adelaide home. He later co-founded PIPE Networks, which listed on the ASX in 2005 with an initial capitalisation of $14 million, and sold to TPG Telecom for $373 million in 2009. Three years ago, Steve launched River City Labs in Brisbane, a leading co-working community to encourage entrepreneurs in Queensland. Andrew O’Connor left Defence after 14 years as an Army engineer to complete his PhD and to pursue business ownership. Andrew co-founded Relken Engineering to assist clients in improving the performance of their assets and reduce total cost of ownership. With clients such as NSW Water, KPMG, BHP, Glencore and Northup Grumman, Relken has grown to 10 employees and generated over $2 million turn over in its first year. Ethanol (CH3CH2OH), or beverage alcohol, is a two-carbon alcohol that is rapidly distributed in the body and brain. Ethanol alters many neurochemical systems and has rewarding and addictive properties. It is the oldest recreational drug and likely contributes to more morbidity, mortality, and public health costs than all illicit drugs combined. The 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) integrates alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence into a single disorder called alcohol use disorder (AUD), with mild, moderate, and severe subclassifications (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). In the DSM-5, all types of substance abuse and dependence have been combined into a single substance use disorder (SUD) on a continuum from mild to severe. A diagnosis of AUD requires that at least two of the 11 DSM-5 behaviors be present within a 12-month period (mild AUD: 2–3 criteria; moderate AUD: 4–5 criteria; severe AUD: 6–11 criteria). The four main behavioral effects of AUD are impaired control over drinking, negative social consequences, risky use, and altered physiological effects (tolerance, withdrawal). This chapter presents an overview of the prevalence and harmful consequences of AUD in the U.S., the systemic nature of the disease, neurocircuitry and stages of AUD, comorbidities, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, genetic risk factors, and pharmacotherapies for AUD.

This slide deck presented by Dr. Kami Maddocks, Professor-Clinical in the Division of Hematology and Associate Division Director for Ambulatory Operations The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, will provide insight into new directions in targeted therapeutic approaches for older adults with mantle cell lymphoma. STATEMENT OF NEED Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare, aggressive B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) accounting for 5% to 7% of all lymphomas. Its prognosis ranges from indolent disease that does not require treatment for years to very aggressive disease, which is associated with poor survival (Silkenstedt et al, 2021). Typically, MCL is diagnosed at advanced stage and in older patients who cannot tolerate intensive therapy (NCCN, 2022). Although recent advances have slightly increased remission rates, recurrence and relapse remain very common, leading to a median overall survival between 3 and 6 years (LLS, 2021). Though there are several effective options, progress is still needed towards establishing an accepted frontline approach for MCL (Castellino et al, 2022). Treatment selection and management of MCL are complicated by the heterogeneity of prognosis, advanced age and comorbidities of patients, and lack of an established standard approach for treatment, making it vital that clinicians be familiar with the latest research and advances in this area. In this activity chaired by Michael Wang, MD, Professor in the Department of Lymphoma & Myeloma at MD Anderson Cancer Center, expert faculty will discuss prognostic factors informing treatment, the promising results of recent trials in new therapeutic approaches, and the implications of treatment resistance in therapeutic selection for MCL. Target Audience Hematology/oncology fellows, attending faculty, and other health care professionals involved in the treatment of patients with mantle cell lymphoma (MCL). Learning Objectives 1.) Identify clinical and biological prognostic factors that can guide treatment decision making for older adults with MCL 2.)
